28:51 There's a hidden Repel on Route 32 in the tall grass to the left of Picnicker Liz just before Union Cave. Just tested on Crystal version and with decent pathing, you CAN get through Union Cave the first time without any wild encounters. Since Repels can be bought in Azalea town, right after Union Cave you only need to get through it once. This opens up Lapras as a team option if you're willing to put in the effort.

Fun fact: if you can guarantee Ghastly, you can guarantee Abra without the game corner if you keep Mean Look. So long as it's decently leveled, it's speed is comparable and you can stop it from teleporting instantly. And if you still have issues catching it, you can use hypnosis and night shade to guarantee that you won't knock it out.

It’s not a guaranteed encounter because you might get Jigglypuff or Ditto instead on Route 34. There are different encounters on Route 35 and if you miss both of these then it’s Game Corner or Kanto.

This is why I consider species clause to be a buff, it gives you much better control over your catches, especially when you realise you can use repels and an appropriately levelled pokemon to narrow down encounters even further. Not to say that you shouldn't use it, I just think it's an overall buff that makes nuzlockes more consistent. Really loving the videos lately, can't wait to see how you tackle the next generations :)

I'm glad you don't hack in rare candies. I hate how people act like it's still hard to nuzlocke when you use rare candies. If you’re doing a hardcore nuzlocke especially of a harder romhack, you’re just shooting yourself in the foot if you don’t have a fully leveled team for each bossfight. Candies or no, you’re just playing bad if you go in unprepared and underleveled.

Anything past level 40 and you don't really gain that much (a lower level blissey gives like around 800- 1200 exp if I'm not mistaken, with level 50-60 being around 2-3K, which at that point isn't that much)

As a seasoned nuzlocker I do enjoy the old gens being broken down.
The ONE thing I will never support is the argument about not using rare candies. The challenge has level caps to ensure you don't over level and RARE CANDIES MAKE YOUR MONS WEAKER ---> you don't grind EVs when you level up with candies.
I would never blame you for not agreeing, but it's a fact a lot of people oversee!

As a tip, because Nuzlockes, even hardcore, are very personal with rulesets. Providing the rules you follow as a document, a comment, or in the description would be very nice, though in theory not necessary, but it may reduce the number of "That's not the way Nuzlockes should be played >:(" comments.
I was just thinking that when you mentioned something about level caps that are different from how I've seen (and how I personally play) level caps.

I would love to see future nuzlocke runs from you. It'd be really cool to see you break down your thought processes for difficult trainers like this in other games. There's a whole world of ROM hacks that I think it would be really enjoyable to see you play through that have become challenge runs all by themselves. I don't think that many people on youtube have done these games either. Basically just pChal.

I'm guessing that this is going to be very difficult, simply because of GSC's awful level scaling, You basically need to get 7 badges before passing Lv 30!

I have a few variations to nuzlockes that I think are laregly in keeping with the rules and spirit of the run, but one biggie specific to Gen 2 runs: Sacred Ash. As Ho-oh canonically revives the dead, the Sacred Ash is a full resurrection item, usuable on a single Pokemon. As exploits are typically not permitted, there's no duplicating it.
It's a get out of jail free card, but it's the only one you get. If you REALLY want to be lore specifc, it may be used on a total of 3, but for the leniency it grants already, restricting it to one seems the most reasonable.

I'm wondering if it's viable to save Shadow Ball for Snorlax for late game. He learns it, you can Curse and Rest with a Mint Berry. Just a thought I had while watching. Great work as always!

The unfortunate thing with Sneasel is it can't take advantage of its stab types, similar to Gengar and a bunch of other gen 1-3 Pokemon. I'm still shocked that Ghost was physical and dark was special, when most of those Pokemon felt like they were the opposite specialty, with exceptions like Houndoom and Banette. The moves themselves almost felt like they should have been the opposite split (Ghost having Shadow Ball, and every single attacking Dark type move from gens 1-3 are now physical).

I really appreciate the different pokemon used here and also the under leveling. I would have liked to hear and maybe see more of the failed attempts too but that is maybe out of scope for this video.

Key part to hardcore nuzlockes is what you said: find your win conditions (win cons). What matchups will give you the least amount of resistance, what back ups do you have to cover that, what are the LOSING cons for the boss battles and how do you avoid them

  • @croutendo2050

Definitely prefer the level cap ending at the START of a gym battle, so if I level past the cap DURING the battle, it still is all good and can continue to be used.

Geodude/graveler soloes pretty much this entire generation. Chuck and Pryce and Claire are problematic, but one lanturn solves the first 2 (or an electric + flying type, with piloswine taken out by a water type you should have), then the last one can be a battle of attrition if you have your own water type, which you should have multiple because of fishing.

If you have trouble with Morty, you can take one of your normal type pokemon (bird or not bird, whatever you caught), level it up until it learns a move that can hit ghosts and go in with that pokemon paralyzed. Morty's Gastly and Haunter can be taken down with anything, then you switch into the normal pokemon and Morty cannot touch you. The only way his Gengar can hit a normal pokemon is with Dream Eater, but he can't put you to sleep if you are already paralyzed. Gengar becomes the easiest mon to face doing this. And the rest of his team is just very fragile and don't have much offensive pressure
