Let me try and explain it to you youngsters.
I grew up in the 90s. MJ started as a child star and then went solo and became even more famous. That happened mostly in the 70s and 80s when I was born. In the 90s he already achieved a legendary status. Everyone knew about him. My immigrant parents even knew about him. His moonwalk, his style, his adlibs were already super iconic. My friends, cousins, kids from the neighborhood were all moonwalking.
He could literally visit any country in the wold and he'd get mobbed by thousands upon thousands of people.
Whenever he dropped a new single or album, everyone would know and it would be an event. His music videos were like movies and always on MTV.
He achieved an insane level of fame without the internet. This meant people had to actually leave their homes to buy his albums. His Thriller album became the most sold album ever.
He was just as well known as the President of the US, as Diana and Nelson Mandela.
Next to all this fame. He was also an innovative entertainer. He made modern day type concerts popular and a thing. He was the one putting up insanely big shows that everyone nowadays tries to mimmick. Next to being an amazing entertainer and amazing dancer. He was also an insanely great singer.
Just scroll through his discography and witness all the hits he made.
He's also inspired this entire generation. Without MJ there's no Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, The Weeknd, Bruno Mars, Ne-Yo, Usher, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Beyoncé etc.
He's so popular that he still has 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify and he's been dead for 15 years. To put that in perspective, Drake has 80 million monthly listeners and he's at the height of his career.
MJ was really on a whole other level. He created that level.

Michael Jackson was hosted by royal families and presidents. In Europe entire cities were paralysed when he visited (I wasn't even alive back then but I saw reportages from the 90's). Contemporary celebrity-artists are too attainable for people to glorify them so much.
edit: I'm not a part of Michael Jackson ride or die fanclub. My observations aren't written from a fan perspective. Even pre-social media era he [Jackson] understood that to be worshipped by the masses, he couldn't walk along them. He decided not to give interviews in order to remain as mysterious as possible to stimulate public's imagination. I don't know Drake a lot but I have an idea. He'll never reach Michael Jackson level despite similarities.
I don't believe Drake's art has such a dramatic impact on a crazy diverse group of people of all ages. It isn't so universal as Jackson's who was an icon among Cambodians, Slovakian housewives and Soviet Union soldiers. Anyway, I believe it all comes back to access.
I don't know who can glorify Drake to the extent of Michael Jackson in the 90's, after reading his messages to Fantano. It's too human. Constantly beefing within celeb community, who slept with whom, looking for validation through the displays of wealth. It's dirty, it's desperate, it's common. Indeed, celebrities became commoners.
Music business has changed due to internet and money aren't being made on records so artists became reality show celebrities. It seems they need fans more than fans need them. They compete for attention by delivering constant glimpses into their personal lifes. Internet is oversaturated. Instead of being starved for any information on their favourite musician, people see celebrities few times a day, hoping to get new music within next 5 years. More important that strong parasocial relationship denies any possibility of celebrities being perceived by the public as titans. For people they are messy friends who happen to make music they like and have money to show off.

Back in the 80s and 90s there wasn't competition when you are the biggest you will remain there but now at days we have "algorithm" wich means that some random guy can become the biggest in the world quickly

True, I was born in 05; and even if I'm a MJ fan and know this, its still impressive for me his level of fame(I don't know how to explaining, I try to imagine his level of fame in that era and my brain can't get how big his popularity was)

Even with SOCIAL MEDIA, he is not bigger than MJ. MJ probably won’t be dethroned mainly because there isn’t one artist that could shine above the rest in this day and age

Arguably out of all the musicians to date. Beyoncé is the only person currently making music close to what MJ had.
People would say Swift but Beyoncé is a bigger personality and influence on culture as a whole. Her music is more conceptual. She can actually dance. Has also been with the upper echelons of society, Obama inauguration. Her husband is a mogul.
Not even a Bey Stan, just stating my observation.

Michael Jackson also had a career that spanned 50 years, Drake's career is only really about 10 years old if we're just going off his music, a little longer if we include his child actor career. Drake himself would NEVER claim to be bigger than Michael unless he really was just that dumb.

In terms of pure numbers, Drake is probably technically bigger. But proportionally, like adjusted for the change in population size relative to how many people actually know or like him, obviously he’s not bigger than Michael at his peak.

  • @timreuscher20

MJ did it first, Michael Jackson mania swept the world like no other celebrity did.
The Beatles come pretty close to MJ's level. Drake definitely can't match what MJ did, but he did do well in 2021.
Not hating on Drake, he's very good, but not MJ good.
