From 1982-1997 Michael Jackson was the most famous human on Earth. My parents don't listen to western music and could recognize MJ in all his colors. They don't know who Drake is.

My friends, cousins, kids from the neighborhood were all moonwalking. He could literally visit any country in the wold and he'd get mobbed by thousands upon thousands of people. Whenever he dropped a new single or album, everyone would know and it would be an event. His music videos were like movies and always on MTV. He achieved an insane level of fame without the internet. This meant people had to actually leave their homes to buy his albums. His Thriller album became the most sold album ever. He was just as well known as the President of the US, as Diana and Nelson Mandela. Next to all this fame. He was also an innovative entertainer. He made modern day type concerts popular and a thing. He was the one putting up insanely big shows that everyone nowadays tries to mimmick. Next to being an amazing entertainer and amazing dancer. He was also an insanely great singer. Just scroll through his discography and witness all the hits he made. He's also inspired this entire generation. Without MJ there's no Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, The Weeknd, Bruno Mars, Ne-Yo, Usher, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Beyoncé etc. He's so popular that he still has 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify and he's been dead for 15 years. To put that in perspective, Drake has 80 million monthly listeners and he's at the height of his career. MJ was really on a whole other level. He created that level.

Constantly beefing within celeb community, who slept with whom, looking for validation through the displays of wealth. It's dirty, it's desperate, it's common. Indeed, celebrities became commoners. Music business has changed due to internet and money aren't being made on records so artists became reality show celebrities. It seems they need fans more than fans need them. They compete for attention by delivering constant glimpses into their personal lifes. Internet is oversaturated. Instead of being starved for any information on their favourite musician, people see celebrities few times a day, hoping to get new music within next 5 years. More important that strong parasocial relationship denies any possibility of celebrities being perceived by the public as titans. For people they are messy friends who happen to make music they like and have money to show off.
I think one thing stopping artists from gaining that level of monolithic mystique is the fact that to get your music out you have to be very active on social media to begin with.

Michael Jackson also had a career that spanned 50 years, Drake's career is only really about 10 years old if we're just going off his music, a little longer if we include his child actor career. Drake himself would NEVER claim to be bigger than Michael unless he really was just that dumb.

In terms of pure numbers, Drake is probably technically bigger. But proportionally, like adjusted for the change in population size relative to how many people actually know or like him, obviously he’s not bigger than Michael at his peak.
