The Fray Fitness Functional Trainer has become a product that has been overwhelmingly requested to be reviewed. It's cheap, has decently heavy stacks, and a pretty standard design with a compact footprint. Today we do an in-depth review on the functional trainer, compare it a bit to Titan Fitness and Rep Fitness offerings (hoping to do a round-up on all of these soon) and give my opinion on if it's worth adding to your home gym.

I want one!! FYI the part you didn’t install is the accessory storage that goes on e back of the rear uprights

Only US 😭😢🙈

I feel like the spot on your shirt really humanizes the review.
I’ve got those two n every shirt now.. I’m guessing he’s got a kid under 8months old
Smart business direction from Fray.
Most home gym owners don't want to spend ridiculous prices for equipment. A common goal is sensible investment.
Australia needs more companies like Fray.
As long as the weigh stack is heavy enough and the pylons are standard so I can mix and match attachments on it.
I'm surprised with some of the negative reviews. I was so impressed with the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMwYg0MOXR4M-oGeyBsNSYe1aPOUoRH6D cage that I got the lat pulldown attachment that goes with it. It is equally outstanding. I don't have one complaint other than putting it together is a job. The instructions and packaging of the parts are very well designed and organized. Also, I stripped and damaged the pull down cable the first day, admitting it was my stupid fault, and they quickly replaced it at no charge. I'm 6'5, 280lbs and fit in the cage just fine. Glenn B
I wish you did more reviews of different functional trainers
We'll see how this one does and then maybe do more!
@@GarageGymReviews If cost was no object, do you think the TuffStuff PPMS-245 is the best functional trainer on the market?
@@bumjin00 inspire line looks pretty good for China made and has lifetime warranty
Can you review force USA g12?
@@shish_taouk I'm actually thinking of getting this one (or the Body Solid GDC210 or 250 which is a lot wider), instead of getting a power rack and such. Not wanting to be too serious about lifting anyway. Just need something to lose fat/weight and getting toned (not planing on getting super muscular). Would you say that a machine like the FT1 would be more than enough?
You had me rolling at 1200lb deadlifter! Love it Coop!
😆
I actually had to be rewined.I thought I was hearing things but he's always joking
Coop you have gained more than 30k new subscribers in the corona time!! Respect
Would love to see it compared to titans, reps, inspire, and any other under 2k
I bought the fray functional trainer and it came all scratched up. They ended up sending a GHD for free, talk about good customer service! Im not in love with the functional trainer but like you've hinted, you get what you pay for.
8 minutes in and I was worried I wasn’t gonna hear Coop say knurling....
I bought an Inspire for 1899$ free shipping and I love it. Now I've only had it a month but so far it does everything I need it to. Keep doing what you and your stache are doing lol
Visited this company while in Memphis, TN. Good group of people that own and run it. They have some other good equipment as well, their belt squat was well made as well as their curved treadmill.
Anyone else think Coop was flipping us off with his snap at the end? 😂 I’ve been wanting to add a cable pulley system to my garage, you should review Titan’s
Nice review. Having used similar machines in hotel gyms many times, you can do a lot with one of these, including (depending upon the handles you have, and whether you have a bench): press, squat and deadlift type movements. Not quite the same range of motion as with free weights, but worth doing. This would be far superior to non-cable bowflex or "home gym" machines, IMO.
Did your camera guy forget to tell you about the spot on your shirt
Nah, paid extra for that.

I've been waiting for a functional trainer deep dive
I have the Inspire Fitness FT2 and I love it
I just ordered this and can't wait . But there are no good RUclipsrs out there doing reviews of Functional trainers so hopefully Coop ventures more into it
I want that ft2
That’s a really good one. It was sold out for so long.
I ordered the Inspire Fitness FT2 in March, got it for a really good deal, $4200 out the door shipped and in home assembly including the 50lb plate add ons.... but when i called to check on a delivery time a week later, they told me they had no more in stock, which wasn't the case when i ordered it. Then they said they had no idea when they were getting more so i cancelled. I am really glad i did. I ended up with a Rogue RM490 Rack with accessories, Rogue Boneyard Ohio Bar, Solid Bar Fitness Contender Bar, some weight plates and a Hoist Fitness 5165 FID Bench with Leg Extension. I'm quite happy with this setup and i don't think the FT2 would have fully met my needs for the kind of lifting i really wanted to do. But checkout Getfitover40 on you tube for FT2 stuff
@@scottrivkin3307 I went this way also, But I still want to get the ft1. Lifetime warranty would be nice on it.
I would love to see your reviews expand to other types of training - more functional trainers including the all in 1 set ups like Force USA, leg press / hack squat combos and the best hip thrust set ups. There is a larger market and demand then just power cages and there always seems to be scorn towards other training styles when these items are also helpful for recovery based training / physio.
Would you buy this one, Rep fitness or Titan fitness one? Thnx for the video!

A review on best adjustable dumbbells would be awesome!
Just received the fray fitness tallest power rack and with barbells and everything else.... its looks so cool and it’s so solid in material and more solid in price!!! Happy I spend my money on fray fitness then rogue
How’s your rack holding up? And would you buy from Fray again?
“Im a 1200lbs deadlifter” Eddie Hall punching the air rn 😂
I just got an Inspire FTX functional trainer and love it. $1,899. with free shipping.
Here's the real deal,
I just ordered and received one of these last month. This is without a doubt one of the worst companies I've ever done business with regarding customer communication, customer service, product quality, and willingness to rectify issues. When I received my functional trainer, it looked like it was loaded in the back of a pickup truck and beat straight to hell. No exaggerations as I have both pictures, and video proof. My machine was beat up and damaged in almost every single way possible. Dents, Scratches, Rust all over at least 30% of the machine. 3 out of 4 guide rods bent, both locking balls on the slider were ripped up, handles were installed upside down and torn up. The entire machine was filled with the glass beads from blasting the machine which spilled out all over my house. the pallet it arrived on was damaged and half of the weights were opened and spilled out everywhere. Missing several bolts, half the stickers, the back plate with the hooks was bent into an arc shape. Grease and sticky substances were smeared all over the square slide posts. For something that was supposed to be brand new, it looked like is was several years old and beat straight to hell. The company was very unwilling to work with me on replacing the machine, tried charging me to ship the broken machine back, and then ultimately denied all responsibility and tried blaming all of this on the shipping company. After several conversations they just tried taking the machine back and dropping me vs trying to right their wrong and replace the machine. The most this company would offer is sending me a can of spray paint to "touch up" the multiple scratches, gouges, and dents in the main frame. This equipment also comes from China so you know this is cheaply built and the owner does not care about quality. for a first and last time dealing with this company, I would highly recommend that anyone watching this video stay as far away from this machine as possible and pay the extra money and buy something from a reputable company and don't get screwed like I did.
No update on if they helped you fix this issue?
@@juandoe7802 After weeks and weeks of deliberation, I decided to cut my losses and make them send me all the individual replacement parts needed, as they flat out refused to send me a replacement unit. Per their words, it was more important to get pending orders out, rather than fixed damaged ones and save face with the company. It seems like they don't care about negative comments or bad PR. The most they would do is only refund me half of the cost of shipping and tried telling me I was being an unruly customer and that even though I have picture and video evidence proving the condition of my machine, again in their words it "didn't leave their shop that way..." The machine works fine for what it is, and more than likely I'm probably just unlucky on this one, but ya screw this company. As someone who works in customer service, they get a flat out F for theirs. Stay far away and I hope they get their act straight.
When you have a bukakke at 8.00 but your gym video shoot is at 8.15 😂😂😂
The price is RIGHT!👍💪
I picked up the Body Solid PFT100 with dual 210 LBS weight stacks for about $1400 with free shipping. It’s a solid functional trainer with a compact footprint. I’d definitely recommend it for most home gym users.
Where’d you snag that!?
Great piece of equipment! Moving back to Texas and changing careers, and starting my first home gym. This would be so helpful to get started!
You know, Coop, I make a decent amt of money at this pt in my career. I am older now--recently turned 62, though don't look it. I used to train a lot; was easily one of the strongest guys on my college football team. BUT I would BET that MANY today are just like me who are looking for solid--but decent--home gyms JUST like this--esp. now with viruses being a more potent thing around for a long time. We may have other interests & not want to blow the entire budget on a home gym--would rather have something SOLID & functional, though, we can keep for Yrs. You should CONTINUE to review items like this, if possible. Though Love the high-end stuff, too ! But only to augment what I have. I already have 2 house rooms full of decent gym equipment--a couple pieces I even bought & redesigned a bit from ASU's Athletic Dept--for the past 15-20 yrs. I would bet I am in good company among your viewers (as you alluded too). Keep up the great channel !! Love the personality you throw in from time to time :)
ps. fyi, though...while I like the move of this guy to build this, I personally prefer wider cable systems I can fit a bench between that may be used on another piece behind it as well. In addition, I love the look of solid, square tubing systems. This is nice, though. At the right price-pts, this unit likely has a good niche market.
Coop, the titan fitness plate loaded functional trainer offers a great value in my opinion. Definitely not commercial grade but 390lb loadable at $750. I was lucky enough to snag one during the rona.
How do you like it? Pretty smooth?
jl7kicks yeah smooth enough for plastic pulleys. I was honestly surprised how good it was for the price. The powder coat is better than what they put on their t3 racks too.
I see that Valor sells one that's looks identical. I've been thinking about this when they come back in stock.
looks like the 2023 model is advertised with upgraded steel pulleys and heavy duty cables - not bad, on sale for $1399 + freight ship.
Lets get a review on the rep fitness functional trainers coop!
I'm deadlifting 1500lbs myself. Keep working at it.
I'm digging the 'stash, though it makes you look like you smoke Malboro Reds and own a white van! Just busting your chops Coop, thanks for another great review!
Fray Fitness to my rescue! I was able to grab all my dumbbells 5-100lbs, plates, and barbell in just 4 weeks.
If you’re looking for a functional trainer and on a tight budget for money and/or space consider a single stack cable with two handles. Can get a decent one for under $300 that uses plates. Very small footprint. Does 90% of what most people would do with a functional trainer.
Love it! Thanks Coop! Can you do a review on your recommendation for cheapest power rack?
Good idea. In the meantime, this review should help you: www.garagegymreviews.com/best-squat-racks
I went with the Rep FT-3000, I think you should review that one when you get the chance =)
Need the comparison vs ones like rep ft5000
Rep fitness is a shit of a company. Don’t bother
Or the FT-3000, which is priced similarly
@@babycake2941 poor experience?
Had the rep fitness ft5000. It isn't great at all. Just looks pretty. The weights don't line up right. The pulleys don't go high enough for tricep pushdowns. The adjustable handles have horrible range of motion. Pullup bars are to large to apply fat grips. It is wobbly doing pullups with me weighing just 75lbs and being only 5'6" I shouldn't have to kneel to do tricep extensions.
I sold it and went with the xmark functional trainer, may not look as pretty but definitely better quality.
@@babycake2941 not sure about the rest of the stuff they make but the FB 5000 is awesome. Especially with the fat pad.
Nice honest review. Thanks.
Face pulls for a 1200 lb deadlift ...got it 👍
Love the content Coop!
I would love to see a review on difference between vertical leg press and 45 degree leg press machines. There is nothing on RUclips with info and opinions on these
Definitely thought Coop gave us the finger at the end. Had to rewind out of shock (he's snapping at the camera).
I would never!
Thanks Coop
Hw would it work with a multi-bench? Would the bench "fit" in place? In other words, how does it feel when doing presses and/or flies from the bench? Also, how about a squat or lunges? How about leg kickbacks and extensions? Great Review! YOU ROC
Would you prefer this or the titan functional trainer? Wanting to buy one within the next week
Thank you, great review. Honest and fair
I mean, the titan fitness one is $750 and it is plate loaded, and the cables alone are $200 airplane cables. For the price of this, you can get the Titan Fitness plate loaded functional trainer, AND their leg press/hack squat combination machine.
The hack squat that fray fitness sells looks interesting, And at a good price also.
Hey Coop, love your honest reviews. Are you considering reviewing Fray Fitness racks or for other lesser known brands?
Owner actually seems pretty cool
Ok, so I do see the need for a functional trainer for the home...we are looking at purchasing one to go with our power rack. That being said, how about a review of the ForceUsa G series and Ironmaster IM2000. The reason I bring these two up is because both smith machine capabilities.I do realize that IM 2000 from ironmaster does not have a ton of cable exercises, it does look like a nice machine overall. Anyway I thought maybe in your upcoming videos a review of the ironmaster IM2000 and the force USA G series functional trainer would be nice. Anyway enjoy the reviews, cheers
Great review. I just bought the force USA g3 rack, Smith machine and functional trainer in one. I would love to hear your thoughts on that piece of equipment. Thanks.
The black board is for handle attachments
Coop you only do expensive equipment reviews..
Well today my friends I'll review a $1.5K piece of equipment!
Looks somewhat different now. Have they improved it?
Need to review the Titan version
Fray Fitness' functional trainer is awesome. Fully commercial unit indeed. Same gauge steel as any other unit you see in a commercial gym in the USA. Thicker and stronger cables than almost any other company out there. To reduce it from being termed "commercial" due to the pully is not accurate. It now includes a lifetime warranty on the pulley's. There was total disagreement on the quality of those, than what was described in this review so the company put their money where their mouth is and did what no one else does and provided a lifetime warranty on them to prove their quality and leave no doubt that a pulley will ever be your limiting factor on a Fray fitness functional trainer.
I've been eyeing one of these for a while now. Do they allow you to increase the weight stack up from 200ibs? Or is it standard at 200ibs?
@@Matt34677 It is an option coming in the next six months, and it will be an affordable upgrade
@@jeremydugger9395 That sounds awesome. Do I need to wait or will I be able to purchase it separately?
@@Matt34677 I would check the website in about a month, potentially listed there by then.
@@jeremydugger9395 Thank you!
What should I purchase a functional trainer or a full power rack?
Both of them almost cost the same if you add up the extra add-ons that you need with power rack.... Some are even costlier than the costliest trainers!!
The one from TDS/New York Barbells is about 1500 too. Weight stacks only go up to 160lbs but you might be able to upgrade it. I wonder how this one compares.
Good gosh, I felt the wind through my computer screen when he used the cross cables. 1200? Deadlift? Maybe, for his warmup
How does the Fray Functional Trainer compare to REP's functional trainer?
Coop! Love your videos. But like you, I need to be honest. I couldn’t stop looking at that splotch on your shirt.
..btw, thx for the video.
spot on the shirt = gym warrior
5:22 Behold, the Deadlift World Record holder.
Hey Coop,
Great honest review. How was the packaging and instructions to assemble? The bench I bought from there was not so good in that regard. No instructions, just a page in broken English and the hardware was strewn throughout the box.
Is this a better value than the inspire FTx/ft1? Costco usually sells that for $1299.
Question. Your fray storage rack on the left; did you put rogue plate dividers on the tray or did you just changed the left to a rogue storage unit from your fray storage.?
Hey coop it’s funny they choose a Gray !! Most gym equipment matches way nicer with black and then bright colors. Gray to me makes their functional trainer look cheap!!
It makes me think of any number of lower end home grade manufacturers, but the 11 gauge steel is right there with my rack and its a tough piece.
Something like this seems like its good enough to outlast its own warranty then be worth upkeep and even upgrades down the line.
They have like 5 or 6 different colors to choose from. I'm eyeing a red one.
The functional trainer actually looks pretty solid. When you were yanking on it trying to lift the 200lbs it didn't budge at all. I have seen you review much more expensive functional trainers that shake when you yank on them like that. I can't stand a rinky dink set of gym equipment.
Thanks for the video. What about the Powertec functional trainers? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the Streamline plate-loaded model.
Functional trainers are good for beginners and people who are focusing on rehabilitation. It good for alot of stiff that you can do with bands but its alot more controlqble as far as weight and adjustments.
I have a noob question. You’re pretty strong, I’ve seen you lift heavy and all that. How come you don’t look super jacked or bulky or cut?
them pulleys are like 10 bucks a piece, easy to replace. (the red anodized ones are like 14 buck a piece)
Where r u getting them from? Cause one of mine came damaged
@@michaelpinson1911 You can get em off ebay, the search terms are "88mm pulley gym" for the red alloy ones, and the regular black plastic ones are "105 pulley gym".
@@michaelpinson1911 Fray will also give you free replacement of a damaged pulley
This looks pretty decent but doubt I could fit this and a rack so it’s a rack for me! Would love your opinion on the best adjustable dumbbells out there?!?
He’s done a review on the website for that compares some of the main ones. It’s the PowerBlocks www.garagegymreviews.com/powerblock-adjustable-dumbbells-review/
Brandon Schwartz Thanks man, really appreciate that! I will go check it out now. Good looking out man 👍
Hey Coop do you think functional are ok to do lat pull down on as well? By pulling a bench up? Do you recommend any for both?
I am looking for a machine I can do cable crossover on and also lat pull down but I only have room for one. Price isn’t really a concern. Do you have any videos evaluating these? I see some Amazon ones say they can do lat pull down too but don’t look like they can take much weight.
Love the content dude and really appreciate your knowledge!
Coop you should review the inspire ftx. I picked one up from Costco for 1350
Hey Coop! Would you still recommend this over the Titan or Rep?
I second this!
I've been interested in one of these for a while now. Can't seem to find any comparison reviews though. I'd seriously love if you could review one that REP sells and compared it.
He’s either a fireman or Navy SEAL now because that ‘stache is on point
For 500 more you can get the Rep/Victory FT5000 which is a much better unit in the same ball park. I have had it for a year, it's a great unit for a home gym. Rock solid and smooth if you assemble it properly. Free Motion units are nice but I would rather spend the extra 4k on something else.
How’s the Rep FT5000 holding up? I been eyeballing it for a while. You still recommend?
My "semi-public service announcement" regarding Functional Trainers…
If on a limited budget, I'd consider looking for USED Bodymaster, Nautilus, or Paramount Functional Trainers. Have more $$$$?
Then consider USED Functional Trainers from Tuff Stuff and FreeMotion. NOTE: Look for FreeMotion units with 2 stacks (of course) and 'arms' that move in 2-planes (up/down & left/right) as I see people trying to sell the single-plane FreeMotion Functional Trainers for the same price as the dual-plane versions.
____________
Be sure to do your homework and find out what ratio (4:1 or 2:1, for example) as people tend to get mesmerized when a functional trainer has two, 200lb stacks (as an example) but if that same functional trainer has a 4:1 ratio that would mean the max available resistance (at the end of each 'arm') would only be 50lbs!
My first Functional Trainer was a Nautilus Freedom Trainer with a single 305lb stack and 4:1 ratio. This placed about 76.xlbs at the end of each arm, but if you joined the ends of BOTH cables together (with properly load-rated carabiner from Home Depot) it would change it to a single connection, 2:1 ratio, delivering a max resistance of around 150lbs. The Nautlius Freedom Trainer has been around since 2003, I believe. I bought mine for $500. It has a relatively small footprint and it has dual-plane 'arms' (unlike some older FreeMotion units, as noted above) There is also a 'medical/rehab' version of the Nautilus Freedom Trainer with the first few top plates being 10lbs each and the remainder of its plates being the standard 15lbs each, but the overall stack of this medical/rehab version is less than the 305lb stack on the version I had. Another popular Functional Trainer that can sometime be found 'on the cheap' is the dual stack, Paramount PFT-200/200A. I’ve seen these listed for $200 - $800 used! (pre COVID-19, of course!)
____________
I've since sold my Nautilus Freedom Trainer for $850 and replaced it with a used, Tuff Stuff PS-245 Functional Trainer for $1800.00 and a 12-hour round trip. The Tuff Stuff PS-245 is the very same Tuff Stuff model Jeff Cavaliere uses on his Athlean-X RUclips Channel. Now here’s the catch - the Tuff Stuff PS-245 that I purchased has two, 200lb stacks (each plate is 10lbs) but it came with the 4:1 ratio configuration from the factory - that means a 'max resistance' of around 50lbs max would be available at the end of each arm! No big deal (as I knew this before I hit the road to purchase it and had spoken to Tuff Stuff) and with 2 new cables from Tuff Stuff (for $200.00 more), I converted its paltry 4:1 ratio to 2:1, now offering up to 100lbs of max resistance (and 200lbs max, too, when I connect both cables/stacks together with a properly-rated carabiner.)
____________
If I won the lottery, I'd be looking at the Prime Fitness Functional Trainer.
Sports Art’s Functional Trainer allows you to change its ratio with the flip of a lever, as I recall.
Great review definitely consider. Can you do a review on titan fitness functional trainer ive been thinking about buying it but can't find any reviews on it.
I can tell you Titan's is not commercial ( Fray's definitely is). There is a reason Titan does not list their gauge steel. It is not 11 gauge steel, which is THE determining factor if a unit is commercial or not. It is also like a few of their other products, not but as well and the cables are not nearly as stout as Fray Fitness cables.
I’ve been eyeballing the Rep FT, which costs slightly more, but has a nicer finish, IMO. But, it seems like a used commercial grade, like Lifetime Fitness, FT can be had for the same price as one of these is new. Decisions, decisions!
this video is exactly what i wanted!!!
Can you recommend some home functional trainers with this much weight and the best pulleys?
I got the Powertec Functional Trainer
Do a Inspire Fitness FTX Functional Trainer with Bench from Costco 1300$ review worth it?
I picked up a used free motion fictional trainer for 1500. Right when gyms had to close. New price is like 6500 i couldn't pass it up. Best decision
Hi, I'm interested in this. What's the highest height/setting for the pulley? Is it enough for a 5'8 guy to do lat pulldowns while seated on a bench?
Thanks for the help!
Coop been watching AthleanX videos with all that face pull talk 😉
Those two things are supposed to hold clip in attachments, I think

Just wondering- given the pandemic the popularity of those all in one functional trainers/Smith machines has increased. Have you ever done a review on those? Like the Force Usa G6 or a different style like the Inspire FT2.
Are you ever gonna do reviews of some of the Canadian fitness equipment companies?
