Wings dont just flap up and down... that would generate no lift, they need to rotate upwards on the upward movement and then flat on the downwards stroke
While this is true, the mechanism itself doesnt need the rotation! All ornithopter designs ive seen (except like, 1) only have up/down, the "rotation" happens naturally when theres fabric on the wings
