Classic TV Theme: The Flash (1990) (Stereo • Xpanded!)

  • The 90s version of The Flash only ran one season, but it was a memorable one and there are still fans who prefer to it the CW's reboot. Certainly the theme was a great one, from Danny Elfman who composed scores for superheroes from Batman to Peter Parker. And Shirley Walker, who adapted the theme into grandly symphonic scores week after week, deserves kudos as well. We include the show's opening titles and closing credits, Xpanded with the longer credits from the pilot film that show off Shirley Walker's musical skills. It's all in stereo, unlike the digital downloads you can rent/purchase that have thin, mono soundtracks. Lesson: Don't throw away your DVDs.

    Danny Elfman knocked it out of the park with the score for the show. I also like the closing credits simply showcasing the flash logo over the red background. Straight, and to the point.

      Both were composed by Danny Elfman

      Aside from Elfman composing both themes, this show was heavily influenced by the Batman movie in terms of tone.

      Relistening to the music today I can see how it has much of the same feel. I'm surprised I didn't notice it before (of course, I hadn't watched the intro possibly since the 90s).

      I believe both Danny Elfman and Shirley Walker composed this one as well as the Batman

    THE FLASH ran so BTAS could walk! From having Mark Hamill essentially preparing for the role of voicing Joker to Shirley Walker re-purposing her FLASH musical cues. I mean, c'mon! Tell me that first end title song doesn't sound like the train sequence from CHRISTMAS WITH THE JOKER!❤

    This is the only Flash series for me. And I realized why I liked it so much, it was because the music is derived by Danny Elfman from the Batman TAS series which I deeply enjoyed as a kid

    • @ValiantWrestling
      @ValiantWrestling 2 месяца назад

      It wasn't derived from Batman The Animated series, this show came out in 1990, 2 years before Batman The Animated series and Elfman composed that and the 1989 Batman's theme as well as this one...

    A really watchable show from what I remember with a great Danny Elfman theme. I gather it got cancelled after only a few episodes was because it was an expensive show to make, something like a million bucks per episode due to the large number of visual effects needed. Although Stat Trek Next Generation had a similar budget, that show had huge ratings after the first season and sold all around the world whereas this show under didn't sell as well as it should., which is why a lot of people from outside the US don't remember it.

    The original 1990 show was the best and the theme was so cool yes it was cheesy but it was very comic book accurate and it was the 90's were use to cheesy ❤ and it's sad this only lasted one season while the 2014 version which i think's absolute rubbish and it's become more of a soap opera and it saddens me that this had more seasons and the original show only had one.

    Well, I actually did like this series over the current Flash series. I can't say the 90s show was more imaginative (it really wasn't), but I liked the characters better and it did a good job opening up The Flash to non-comics fans. And it had Amanda Pays whom I absolutely loved from Max Headroom, and Mark Hamill showed up a couple of times as The Trickster, which he played very much as Joker Lite, but none of us cared.
    There are times I think the current Flash series is far too insular, very much appealing to hardcore comics fans without offering much beyond that. I've felt that way about the entire Arrowverse oeuvre, actually, which, although I was a comics fan for many years (not so much nowadays), it has made it very difficult to get me into the modern-day comics movies and TV. None of these shows and movies work for me, and I find it hard to explain why. They're like comics come to life but then an episode does something that wasn't in the comic and doesn't fit, and I get thrown off. I just cannot really explain, but it's just ... odd sometimes.

      I totally get what you're saying. I loved this show as a kid and while it wasn't more imaginative than the current series (it was also made in a different era where alot of today's plots wouldn't fly) it was also just enjoyable for what it was and wasn't always trying to preach (**queue Scottish accent**) THE MESSAGE.
      The current Flash series has ALOT of COMPLETELY UNLIKABLE characters and the plots are also paper-thin and almost completely unwatchable (to say nothing of what they did to Supergirl!).
      Matter-of-fact the BEST part of this series is when JWS shows up as Jay Garrick or (even better) the 90s Flash!
      Whenever JWS showed up it just added a more grown up tone and left all the mindless teenie-bopper filler stuff from the rest of the series in the rearview.

    • @Jayce1701
      @Jayce1701 Год назад +2

      Now that I think of it, if you haven't seen them yet, try watching the Netflix Marvel shows (they're on Disney+ now). They are just in a completely different league from the CW stuff (though they were contemporaries). And, honestly, to me, the VERY BEST that the MCU has turned out.
      No teenie-bopper stuff, very adult-oriented, very grounded, tight writing, and the acting is ON POINT.
      I enjoyed them all: Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, AND The Defenders.
      They are all enjoyable (though Daredevil and Punisher really stand out from the pack), even from a neophyte's standpoint, but as someone who read alot of these comics growing up, they REALLY do the characters justice.

    I love this theme but it doesn't uniquely scream "Flash" to me. This feels like it could be put as any superhero's theme and it'd fit. The CW's Flash, for all of it's *many* faults, has an iconic Flash theme.

    • @samuelperezgarcia
      @samuelperezgarcia Год назад +3

      What, exactly, is iconic about the CW Flash's theme? I'm not saying it's a bad theme at all, but it's nothing special to me, sounds kind of generic. Without context the 90's Flash theme doesn't scream Flash, certainly, but it's a rousing theme that screams HERO!!! The CW Flash's theme feels... tame, by comparison.

    • @LunarOverdrive
      @LunarOverdrive 11 дней назад

      @@samuelperezgarcia I'm not much of a music guy so I couldn't tell you *why* exactly the CW's Flash theme seems more suited for the character. I guess part of it is the pace. The CW's theme *feels* more like running to me, if that makes sense?
      I will say that the music is the best part of the Arrowverse shows. Often times everything else about them is mediocre.

    • @samuelperezgarcia
      @samuelperezgarcia 10 дней назад

      @@LunarOverdrive I do get what you mean, the theme makes you think of running. Then again, so does the Elfman one, although he batmanized the hell out of it. xD
