@@garrickberry3175 In spanish we don't have neutral pronouns, so whenever we need to use o refer to a mixed audience, people etc (whatever gender) the général rule to that were and are the use male pronouns and nouns and adjetives. For example: To Say students, we can Say Los estudiantes/ los alumnos when WE are talking about a male o mixed crowd but with only female crowd we say Las estudiantes/ las alumnas. In spanish the general rule is that, but even it isn't Always the case. Example : for the word people or person in singular and plural We Always say " la persona " or "las personas". This words are female words and it doesnt Care if you are refering to a Man. We dont Care really. We have bigger problems
There's also a grammar reason to refrain from latinx. Let's take the heritage month and studies example. In Spanish the heritage month would be "mes de la cultura latina" and studies would be "estudios latinos". In Spanish mes (month) is male, but cultura (culture) is female and it's the last noun used and what the term latina is describing and thus we use latina. In the case of estudios (studies) we use latinos because studies is a male noun in Spanish. It has nothing to do with the gender identity of the students. Men can be referred to as latinas depending on the term used to group them. Populations and persons are female terms (población / personas), they'd be described as latina/latinas even if there are men in the group. It's wrong to say "la población latino". It's always "la población latina" even when it's all men. Same applies for a community which is a female term in Spanish even if all its members are men. So it's comunidad latina. Unless we use the word "de" (of) which implies members or individuals which are male terms so it would be "comunidad de latinos". Which is short for "comunidad de 'miembros' latinos". If I said personas (persons) explicitly then I'd use latinas. As in "comunidad de personas latinas". It makes no sense to use a gender neutral term such as latinx because "personas" is female. Even if I'm referring to a group of all men. It'd be horrible grammar.
The problem is you used the actual language to dispute the term. The term was created by white college students who only know enough Spanish to order at Chipotle.
As someone who's brazilian and also speaks a bit of spanish, gender-neutral words don't work, because in spanish and portugues words have gender, some we just use male terms as neutral.

Im assuming since these two languages are similar then the same goes with Spanish where you could just use Latino.

Why use _x_ if the letter _o_ already has the duality of being used as masculine and neutro? To a singular object O is masculine, but to a group of objects O is neutro. It’s simple. For example, imagine I have a chess board that can also be used as a checkers board, why, if it’s not necessary, should I get a separate board of chess and a separate board of checkers?
Hi! I'm a month late but I might be able to explain why people would want to use a separate word for neutral. Some people are what's called "non-binary", which means that they don't identify as male or female. If this is your first time hearing about this, that's okay and it's okay to be a little confused by this. I won't go into too much detail into why they feel that way, but there are people who do, and I'm close friends with someone who identified as non-binary. For those people, using masculine or feminine terms to describe them can be uncomfortable or distressing, which is why they would want a neutral form for gendered words. However, almost all spanish speaking non-binary people I've met prefer "Latine" and don't use "Latinx", since its pronunciation makes more sense. I hope this could help clarify why someone would want a neutral equivalent to latino/latina and if you have questions I'll try my best to answer them. Have a nice day!
Some people have a problem with using the masculine form as the neutral form because it reinforces "muh patriarchy." These people are usually not native Spanish speakers.

I was caught off guard when the video changed subjects and started getting all political about the subject of gender. I know “latinx” is kinda dumb since “latino” is already kinda gender neutral, but I didn’t expect a rant about how non-binary people apparently don’t exist since the scientific community totally agrees that sex and gender are the same exact thing. 🙄 I’m sure plenty of people here already agree with that part of the video and thought nothing of it, and that’s fine I guess, but I went and checked out the channel’s description and clicked the link to find out what they were all about. I also consulted our good and totally not unreliable friend Wikipedia for more information. Turns out the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal is actually a nonprofit conservative policy institute named after a republican former governor of North Carolina. That basically means that everything they put out seems educational, but is actually politically motivated. The “Politicization” section of their website has articles talking about how colleges should stop trying to combat racism, China is influencing American universities, faith in science is a dumb concept since Joe Biden was the one who pushed for it, and the left’s push for more inclusive language is literally a form of tyranny. I wish the last one was an exaggeration. I’m not trying to cancel this channel. Politically motivated institutions aren’t inherently bad, and I think they’re actually pretty important. I’m just pointing out the fact that the James G. Martin Center is far more biased than it seems to be, and everything it puts out should be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, even though I barely speak Spanish and I’m totally one of those liberals who this institute seems to despise so much, I still think “latinx” is pretty estupido.
First of all, spanish is not a neurtral language as english, so we need the use of pronouns in a sentence for it to be gramatically correct. Second, when refering to a group, spanish use masculine nouns such as "niños" which refers to a group of children, and it doesn't matter if there are girls in that grupo cause that word already refers to the entire group, and it is gramatically correct. Latinx ends up as a useles term for latinos because gramatically it doesn't fit in our language and it was unnecesary but still was brought up by people from the US So think a little before using it
Hispanics: Could you pretty please not call us Latinx, we literally dislike it and it strips off our identity of our language which is a major part of our identity. US High EDs: We are respecting and being inclusive, please do not resist.
As a non-binary person from El Salvador, I much rather just use Hispanic than Lantinx. :/ I understand why some think it’s ok to use it towards non conforming people from southern America, but since it seems to be people from America trying to push this term, it doesn’t seem right? Like they really are just policing our language. It would be hard for me to refer myself as Latino or Latina, but thats why the word Hispanic exist
Latinx is essentially a colonizing term. The fact that people are essentially trying to force Latin America to try and accept this term is an issue in my opinion. As a Mexican American, I don't believe it's a genuine good idea to force Latin Americans to change their language to fit the standards of the United States. While I understand that non-binary people do not feel comfortable with being referred to as latino/latina, we still have Hispanic. It's not right to force our people from Latin America and immigrants here because we want to feel politically correct or want to be right. I do not agree with the real purpose behind this video, which is to attack people who want to talk about gender identity though
Shit, but I think the Filipino language is derived from Spanish?, which would return to the Philippines a Latin country, and that's why they want to put in the Filipino

I just heard that term today. I was really confused what it was about. Two problems. I saw the word but I didn´t head of it at first. I tried to pronounce it in like "La-tings", "la-tinks" an it really sounds more near lit "la-stinks" like if you try to tell someone "you latino, you stinks" lol. and other thing. "Latin-ex" sounds as a gringo[sorry for the term but the one who invented that word deserves that] trying to say ex-latin but he doesn´t know a lot of spanish and forgot that the word ex is a prefix and so it just told it as latin-ex as an insult to tell someone who is a latino/latina but that it somehow isn´t anymore (in like abandoning all the culture way or something; you know, everything can be converted as an insult).
I was agreeing with everything until the point of men and women. The main reason I think Latinx doesn't make sense is that ”Latino” is already neutral. Plus Hispanic is neutral and more popular, making it a better choice.
Hi. I'm Latino and Hispanic, and I was kinda okay with the video up until 5:12. I think the video should have kept its integrity and stayed unbiased. Yeah, Spanish is a gentrified language; almost nobody likes the term; in Spanish, it is pronounced even worse (Latin-eh-kis); people are trying to change the way we say an idiom ("x") with an already centuries-old pre-established pronunciation, and so on. But from then on the rest of the video stops being about language and descriptivism vs prescriptivism, and starts being about views on the validity of sociologic, scientific, and academic definitions of the term 'gender', which has been differentiated from chromosomic sex, on a bunch of scientific fields since the 1970s. The whole point of the LGBTQ+ community is not to argue that there exist a plethora of chromosomic sex classifications (which btw include not only male and female but also 'intersex', an actually medically accurate classification: look for it), but to recognize the existence of some genders ( *social roles* ) besides those universally associated with male and female, and fight against their discrimination. While I believe that rules should not be imposed on speakers, specially rules nobody likes, I do understand that 'Latinx' exemplifies an effort to be more inclusive, in favor of discriminated minorities. That, in and of itself, is noble. It just happens to be a very dumb effort.
What I don't get is, Latinx isn't actually supposed to be a Latin word, it is an American English word used to describe a group of Latino people, people use "Latin(x)" because Spanish is such a heavily gendered language, and Latino/Latina are both still a very confusing fusion of both American and Mexican culture(obviously this depends on where you are, different places have different definitions of the word, I'm speaking mostly for Mexico, America and Hispanic people currently living in the US). Latin-x is just supposed to be an American term that helps you identify them the same way you would any other Hispanic person using a word that fits for them. To be honest, I've always kind of thought that in American English, Latino was already gender-neutral, but I suppose if you are a Hispanic person, then having a way to identify with your people in your home country would be very nice.
You can't expect to change a word, even a full language, and solve every gender problem, it is something cultural and exists, but it's rather unrelated to such trivialities. The ultimate goal is reaching a world with oportunities for everyone, not politicizing the damn language.
I'm not Latino or Hispanic. I'm a white American. From what I understand of the Spanish Language, the word "Latinos" doesn't just mean Latin men. It covers everyone, all folks, people of all gender possibilities. Spanish already has an all-inclusive word in their language. I don't use the term Latinx because I know most Latinos dislike it and their opinion is what matters to me. I don't care what a white progressive activist or white university official says about it. Their opinion doesn't matter a whit to me on this topic. If, however, I meet a Hispanic-American person who specifically requests that I call them Latinx, I will respect and honor it. Something else to consider: if people want to use the term Latinx and use "x" after each noun, they'll have to do this for ALL of the Romance languages, not just Spanish. Somehow, I don't see this happening. As a travel professional, I would strongly advise a white non-Hispanic American to refrain from using the term Latinx when visiting Latin American countries. Otherwise, they'll likely be viewed as an estupidio tonto gringo. Imagine if they used Latinx in Rio where they speak Portuguese instead of Spanish.
wtf..... we don't like the term "latinx" because the gender neutral language in spanish was discussed long ago and we decided we were gonna use an "e", not an "x", not because we are transphobic lmao. Using a "x" would have the same effect as using the traditional "@", how the fuck would you pronounce "alumn@s". If you want to use a gender neutral for latino just say latine, but even so, the word for latino in english is "latin", a gender neutral word! so why would you even bother. Also the Royal Spanish Academy just follows the changes spanish has had through the years, it doesn't make the rules for the language. It even has the definition for "uwu" so it will eventually accept gender neutral terms
No entiendo de qué hablan cuando hablan de "racismo" sobre la palabra "latinx", será que puedes explicármelo? Para mi es solo el uso de la X para no aclarar el género en las palabras, igual que se usa @ como ya dijiste, pero que tiene que ver eso con el racismo!?

This person's gender reason is actually incorrect. According to the father of a former student of mine, there are at least 13 or 14 genders because gender is determined by both genotype and phenotypes, so this is not that clear cut. There are people who are not clearly male or female. In fact the statistic explained to me by the title IX head in my school, who is a nurse/lawyer is that one in about 20 is not strictly male or female. So, I think the linguistic argument is more interesting, in that it would not be recognized in Spanish speaking countries. I am a German speaker and German does not have a word for someone who is both genders, but should get one. Language evolves, and this persons is just saying don't let it. I think they could make a better case for saying let the people who use the language make it evolve. That can be a small group of people who do not define themselves by either gender who just want a choice. Everyone else may be down on it, but too bad.

Las estudiantes/ las alumnas.
In spanish the general rule is that, but even it isn't Always the case.
Example : for the word people or person in singular and plural
We Always say " la persona " or "las personas".

Im assuming since these two languages are similar then the same goes with Spanish where you could just use Latino.

@@agustinbenavente4830 well yes, just saying latino its enough to refer a group of hispanic people, its enough just with that,

First of all, spanish is not a neurtral language as english, so we need the use of pronouns in a sentence for it to be gramatically correct.

and other thing.

Also yeah, I definitely agree, them bringing up the gender debate feels so out of place and really shows their bias going into the topic.
@@suckmyduck7029 That's a good point. Haven't thought of that.

Latino is already gender neutral
Proud to be the first commenter . Very well done.
@@frauteacher The father of your student is wrong gender is defined as "either of the two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones." In resume, is how we socially and culturally we define and create expectations based on sex (sex is binary). The word Latinx was created by people without knowledge of the Spanish or the Latin culture (only Anglos trying to impose they ideology) and that is why is not part of the natural evolution of the language. Latin Americans don't go to English speakers or Germans and tell them how to speak their languages, we don't need to (and will not) tolerate that from Anglo-Saxons.
@Fab H Careful with using logic and fact, or you might trigger Twitter and get you cancelled, lmao. XD
@@frauteacher that 's completely wrong my spamflake friend
@@frauteacher What you, americans, call as "Latino" is just Mexican people, we are not a race, we could be white, black, Indies , native etc.
Imagine calling all english speakers "englinox" , meaning it as a race, it sounds stupid
It is already a mistake to call yourself Latino when you don't have anything to do with The Latium Regio but discard the term Hispanic even though you have Spanish blood in your veins.
The x is only an anglosupremacist symbol. It's an imperialist linguistic imposition that only perpetuates racist stigmas against Spanish speakers.
Gringos (or gringxs lol) gotta realize that we the Latin Americans do not use latinx at all. Me personally, I say that I’m a Mexicano from Jalisco.
