The movie is called No Country for Old Men because the story is really about the Sheriff and what made him decide to retire. Antoine was in the hotel room at the end. The sheriff sensed it and decided not to go in.

@@puff4313 It's taken from the poem “Sailing to Byzantium” The movie is still about the Sheriff.
The reason Anton bursts back into the empty room after initially entering it was because he knew all the rooms would be similar in layout. He also put his hands on the closet wall to determine if his rounds would go through in case someone was hiding behind it. It's his way of honing his reaction time when he went in.

I think a key to understanding this movie is realizing that it’s a sort of anti-western. The hero and his lover get killed by the villain and the sheriff fails to solve the case or get any kind of justice for anyone. The Sheriff’s journey is about realizing that the real world isn’t becoming less like your fantasy of how it should and in fact it never did. You can romanticize the past, but if you had actually been there you would’ve just seen more of the same chaos and senseless violence. It’s a pretty pessimistic story, but realistic all the same. The trick to making the world a better place is about confronting real social problems with practical solutions rather than trying to get the world around you to conform to some fantasy about how you think things should be.

Hey India! Hope you are well, this film was released the same year as There Will be Blood. Daniel Day Lewis pulled out all the stops, acting in that film. Two genuinely all time great films in one year is fairly rare.
Cormac Mc Carthy wrote the original book, his short novel The Road is fantastic and the film of it is pretty good.
It's not he doesn't want to see him kill the dude. He pulled the shower curtain to so he wouldn't get splashed.
Phone bills back in the day listed all the numbers you called.

i know this is kinda random but i swear Vince Gilligan/ breaking bad and subsequently Better Call Saul was heavily influenced by this movie. all the gorgeous, long pan shots of the desert and just the general theme of creating a nowaday-relevant, western thriller . this dropped in 07 and BB was 08 so the times do kinda make sense
also at 20:42 Anton is making a very calculated, practice "breach" of an identical room to the one he's tracked the briefcase to. he knows exactly where the light switch is and also makes sure the wall to the bathroom is essentially cardboard to his shotty
One of those rare movies that keep me thinking about it for weeks as it works to it's final conclusion in my conscious and subconscious.
It’s definitely got layers to it. It’s worth going back to several times. The first time I saw it, I admit I wasn’t used to thinking hard about films. Even “powerful” films I’d seen before had been fairly easy to absorb and didn’t have too much to really mull over and discover.
But this film is totally different. It’s not just a story about someone finding money and then running. It’s a hell of a lot deeper than that.

Lesson of the movie, don’t steal from the cartel… it don’t end well. Also I’m pretty sure the cartel took the money when they killed the main character.
He came back to give water to that dying guy, cause he felt guilty and pity for the man.
