It's nice to see at least someone documented some of the early counter-strike competitive scene. As far as I know, nothing was documented of early Dallas CS where national/international competition got started. By the time of the first CPL in this documentary, several teams and scores of players had already risen to and been bumped from the top position via Dallas area tournaments over the course of about 2.5 years. Memories are so rusty now it's probably a story that won't ever be told.

Cool doc. Counter Strike was gaming magic back in the early days. Insane competition. Used to play it at a LAN near a college campus back in the day and pull all-nighters there with buddies. Plenty of Hot Pockets and Surge. Good times.

    • @Zilkers

Beta CS was so much faster paced and there was not as much spray and pray. The guns had a more predictable recoil and pattern. There was strafe jumping and people who put the time in to learn it were some of the best players because the advantage it gave. In the full release it slowed you down to jump and you had to crouch to consistently shoot strait.

WolvernBlade i have a slightly different opinion, this opinion is heavily inspired or influenced by Total Bis-cite address on the matter. we should not call gaming a sport it and e-sport something digital not physical. Do i think chess is a sport? simply no, there competitions. but a sport is loosely define. and it does't really matter what they called. just shrug it off if somebody is against you.

i used to hang around a lot of the cheating forums because i was interested in coding and found it interesteing. i remember oldmanpeterson and some of the other og cheaters. just people who liked causing chaos and proving theyre better coders/smarter than the developers and other cheat makers. just human nature i guess. some of them were actually really nice and helpful, not just with game stuff but other coding related issues. they just happened to enjoy making online people mad too. i never used cheats other than on lan in my dorms against other kids on my floor i played with. was interesting seeing how they worked. one thing a lot of the random people downloading the cheats prob didnt know is that many of the cheats were straight up trojans, sending your cdkeys and other info back to the creator.... part of how the makers could keep testing and getting caught, because they were collecting so many cdkeys to burn through. mygot was full of dickheads though, mostly not the people making them, just the ones using. ahhh the good ole days.

Great docu. Sure brings me back to the day. Sadly also the cheating part, that was for me a reason to quit with Counterstrike :( They shouldn't have made that cheater unrecognizable. He knows damn well he is cheating and is even proud of it. Then show your face if you do it, don't hide behind a screen, don't hide in the shadows on the camera. The cheaters really ruined the game for me as at one point you had where mostly fighting wall hackers and bots.
Only problem with the docu i had was that i was watching it with a headset on. Had music to the left and the voices to the right. Bit distracting. Other then that great to see this.

I got insanely good for a bit, but never played it a lot. Man now these sorts of games reeeeally bore me, funny how things change so much. not bashing CS in any way, but I'm sure back in the day when this game first came out, it killed the high skill wall arena games like Unreal tournament and Quake when those games were king, because CS simply appeals to anyone of any skill range without consequence, like "oh, it's your first time in Unreal? you're dead before you do anything and have to spend atleast 40 hours until you learn how to move around, learn the map, weapon/item location and finally frag someone.". yea populations for Arena shooters declined since 1999. believe it.
in turn, I also think CS gave pc gaming a reason, to game.

Why aren't there as international of CS events anymore? Is it due to the rise of ESEA? I also want to know why CPL doesn't have as big LANs anymore. It's confusing to me as a newer era CS player.

what are you talking about? the cs comunity is getting bigger by the minute all kinds of big tournaments...

    • @lucasgalarzaLUCASPAGE

Пламен Дечев I don't understand why I see amazing Asian teams and players play in their own excluded leagues instead of competing internationally with Europe or America. There's also very limited invite reservations for the biggest tournaments, such as there being only 2 North American teams being invited for EMS One Katowice, and vice versa with 4 European teams being able to go to the highly exclusive ESEA Lan finals. Where are the Asians/South American players? I know the European scene in CS is great, but it can't just always be Europe vs Europe vs 2 of the same American teams all the time.

CSGO is not big in Asia because it's not installed in PC bangs in South Korea, and because Crossfire / CS Online (which I believe are free to play) have a hold. When games are free to play and easy to run on older computers, that's a big factor in Mainland China. In South Korea it's less about the money and more about the way the gaming community works, kids grow up paying their 50 cents - $1 per hour in PCBangs (LAN Cafes) where other games are available and CSGO isn't yet. Asian teams didn't make much of an international impact until at least 2004, that was 5 years after CS was released, and CSGO is only 2 years old. Maybe in 3 years we will see some top South Korean/Chinese teams.

then RE: your question about the CPL, they went out of business after it was revealed that they weren't paying players in the last few tourneys they held.

the way it is set up is perfect for competition. Above that it's just a very addictive game. This is before cod came with the rpg elements in FPS. It's not about leveling up it's about getting better at the game that makes it addictive and CS has a very high window of skill. In other words the worse cs players and the best are about 1,000 skills away from each other. It's traveling through those skills and climbing higher that makes you want to play more. The better you get the more fun you have. This is just my opinion of course.

Dw4ttz Yeah until you started getting banned from all your favorite servers because they thought you hacked. Well I guess you dont have to worry about that in GO but in 1.6 I did.
