The Ford Puma looks an interesting package for buyers in the small SUV segment searching for something a little more fun. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.
Ten Second Review
Ford finally gets really serious about the small SUV segment - in the shape of this charming little Puma model. It champions mild hybrid tech and doesn't have much time for SUV conventionality. All of which will suit its fashionable band of potential buyers just fine. Frugal, fun and well connected, it fits with the spirit of its time. Just as the original Puma model did.
Background
You might just remember the Ford Puma - but you won't remember it like this. The much-loved original Puma was a little coupe made just after the turn of the century, but cars like that just don't sell any more, so this model line has rejuvenated itself as what Ford calls an 'SUV-inspired Crossover'.
Like the original Puma, it's based on Fiesta engineering and is primarily powered by the mild hybrid 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine the Blue Oval brand has also ear-marked for that supermini. Dynamic changes over the Fiesta include a new setting for the electronic power steering, a stiffer attachment for the beam axle and five-stud hubs for a more rigid fixing of the wheels. All of which should mean that this car handles a little more sharply than direct class competitors like Nissan's Juke and Renault's Captur.
Engines and Tech Spec
From a handling perspective, we can very much expect the Puma to be a Crossover first and an SUV second. Or to put it another way, it'll handle far more like a good supermini than a typical Juke or Captur-class contender. The big engineering interest here lies in the 48V mild hybrid powertrain, which in this case is based on Ford's familiar 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. Here, a conventional alternator is replaced with an 11.5kW integrated starter/generator (called a 'BISG'). The resulting powerplant is available in either 125 or 155PS guises, the more powerful version available with a 7-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox.
Like most mild hybrids, Ford's 'BISG' set-up works in a couple of ways. Either it can be used when coasting or braking to recover energy (which then gets stored in a small lithium-ion battery); or it can assist the engine during acceleration. The brand says that extra electrified assistance has enabled it to lower the engine's compression ratio and fit a larger turbocharger - which all sounds pretty promising for those in search of perky performance. If you really don't like mild hybrid petrol tech, you can ask your dealer about the alternative 1.5-litre diesel variant that's also been developed.
Design and Build
The original Puma was smaller than the Fiesta it was based on. This one's quite a lot bigger, its five-door SUV body being 46mm longer, 54mm higher and 71mm wider, plus the car has a 95mm longer wheelbase than the Fiesta. The headlights are high up on the bonnet (like the first Puma) and Ford says that the beady daytime running lights you get on 'St-Line' variants are a nod to a more modern Ford coupe, the GT supercar. Maybe.
Inside, it's less distinctive. The interior is much like you'd find in any modern Ford, related most closely of course to the Fiesta, with its simple design, SYNC3 infotainment system and relatively smart materials. You do get a few bespoke features, like a digital display for the dials and zip-up covers for the front and rear seats. These not only allow owners to mix and match patterns and colours, but also wash them should they need to: neat. We were impressed by the boot. At 456-litres, it's one of the very biggest trunks in the small SUV segment and is accessed by a powered hands-free tailgate. There's also an adjustable-height floor that can be folded back against the back seats.

If you're buying a car then these are the best reviews available, very impressive
Many thanks for watching!
We changed our Fiesta (2015) for the Puma Titanium X First Edition 125HP in metropolitan white. We've been driving it for almost a month now. Fun car to drive, not as agile as a fiesta. That's something you notice while cornering but it always feels very stable thx to it's weight and width. It does feel better to drive then other small suv's that we also tried out before. We love the interior. We like the idea of the removable seat covers. The dashboard looks nice although there's more hard plastic then we had in our Fiesta but overall decent quality. Infotainment system works fine. Not the best but not the worst either. And we also like the b&o sound system. We tried out both the 125hp titanium and the 155hp st but the 125hp feels a little more comfortable and still very nimble plus this smaller engine just feels better to drive and less noisy. Plus the little battery does give the car that extra punch, more then enough for most people. It has more boot space then the new focus but inside it can get a little tight for taller people, then we would advise getting the Focus. But overal this is a very nice mid size family car and we really enjoy it.
Hi Patje, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Puma. Great to hear you enjoy driving it 👍
How do you find massage seats?
St line x vignale looks smart , like metropolitan white and I would want auto box. Shame not get by hybrid on auto
@@forresg500 we do enjoy the massage seats on longer journey's. It feels like something rolling from top til bottom or the other way around. You can set the Intensity from very low till pretty strong. And it has three zones. Your upper, middle and lowerback area. It really works.
@@forresg500 if you like a bit more stiffer, bit more sportier ride, then get the ST but i felt that for us the titanium was sporty and direct enough. Plus it does feel a bit more comfortable. Specially on rougher surfaces. Oh and plus I felt the 155hp did feel some what punchier on the motorway it also felt like the car was a bit oncomfortable on the road and a bit noisy. I think it's a bit much to ask from such s little engine. The 125hp drives quick and punchy enough and is the best (savest) engine for this car.
The best and most complete review off this car.
Keep up the good work!
Many thanks, Rui! We're glad you enjoyed the review 😁
Had one since the end of Jan, and love it - had the facelifted EcoSport prior, and as much as I enjoyed it, this is something else!
Agreed! I've just a Puma ST X - I previuosly had a Focus and also a Fiesta and the Puma is in a different league. I can see why this car won WhatCar 'Car of the Year'
This is the best car of it's class.
Definitely the most in depth and comprehensive review of this model car I have seen to date.
Filled In a couple blanks I had regarding other models.
I wonder if the 1.5 st model will be a mild hybrid?
Great job sir.
The best review of the Puma....well done!!!
i agree wow! this video should have lots of views.😍🔥
I’ve had mine for a week,I just love it....it’s quite nippy and feels a lot bigger than it is👍
What spec and engine did you go for stephen in waiting on ST 125 not STX I was going to go for titanium. Thanks in advance
Scott Murgatroyd Hi Scott,I have a ST-X 125......I haven’t driven the 155 but for me the 125 is more than adequate,it is a real pleasure to drive quickly on country lanes,it holds the road better than any other car I have had......hope this helps Scott👍
@@greavste71 thanks for taking the time out to reply its appreciated three more weeks till I get mine. Where looking to go to Keswick so plenty of country roads to enjoy the ride and view. Kind regards Scott
Can you fit a factory reverse camera mije just has the sensors.
Kind regards
Rob
The song in the beginning fits very well the presentation of this new promising car! Does anyone know the name of it?
I agree at 22:33 that Ford should have focus more on room at the back f.e having sliding back seats like on the Capture.
I have one a St-Line and I like it very much.
Unbelievably comprehensive review, thank you.
It's our pleasure, Michael. Thank you for watching!
Nice design on the outside.
Just got one.. first impressions are really positive..
Fantastic to hear your new Ford is getting positive response, wishing you the best with your Puma 👍 If you enjoyed the review, make sure to subscribe: bit.ly/319ZKoT
I love my 2018 Ecosport facelift
Good review, thanks. What colour is this one?
Hi Mauricio, it's 'Frozen White' 🥶️
Where are the ten speakers, I can only find seven and the built-in sub.
An excellent in-depth review..Thank you
PUMA automatic (DCT7) is probably the car I' ll buy in a couple of months, one of the two candidates. I' m trying to find out if there will be a DCT7 with mild-hybrid before going ahead though. Do you have any info on that?
Hi John, we'd be happy to explore your options to help find you the Puma that suits you best. Get in touch here: bit.ly/39YHCml

Anyone towing a caravan with one? If so how does it perform?
Thank you! Great review!
Thank you for watching, Saeed! Are you looking for a new car at the moment?
That wasn't Jonathan Crouch presenting.
Another first class job, Many thanks 👍
Many thanks for watching Anthony 👍
The lack of spare tyre will greatly affect sales.
Around 60% of cars have no spare tyre, and 30% have space saver tyres. Full sized spares have been a rarity for years, and it doesn’t seem to have affected sales.
Where are u from? America? This car wont seel rhere.... in europe nobody cares about the spare tyres
nice sporty car.
Not sure I agree with the comment on people not wanting the old puma anymore, I think the market is there just manufacturers are obsessed with offering SUVs
Love your reviews! Préférez vs a good movie
Which is the highest elevation from the floor you can rise the car without disturbing the handling ? Anyone knows ? I really love this car but my height needs the tallest suv I can get, but I just fell in love with this mini suv !
Good thorough review!
Andy,
Glad you enjoyed it. It's proving quite a popular one.
Witch color is it?
Looks like Grey Matter
the first version would seem more modern and beautiful in the dealership ..
I really like this car and usually purchase Ford. However, it's a SUV that has little towing capacity and won't tow a lightweight caravan like a Swift Bascamp. Pretty pointless to my mind when it doesn't have that flexibility for a SUV.
Ford gives option for the spare wheel, the "megabox" doesn't take it's place.
So you can officially fit a spare wheel in that box? Good news then.
Why call it a Puma? You may as well call it a GT40 to trade off the old name it has nothing to do with.
I had a puma .... and i also have bow this one. Its call puma . Get over it.
It’s to get people to look at it and wanting it. As the presenter said the previous fiesta based crossover wasn’t bought mainly because it didn’t have an image like the puma does and adding that name is a way to give it more of a head turning type of approach
same price as BMW Series 1 2020 new trim 🙂
Hi there, are you looking to get a new car at the moment?
Thats sexy! It stands out from the rest. When is it coming to the states?
Sadly there's no word on when it will be heading over to the states. We can only hope!
@@rivervalegroup The Ford Puma & The new Ford Mustand Suv would top in sales, Past Mazda Cx3, & The alll new Nissian sidekick & Nissian Juke.
yes stands just good
Come one.... this is a european car... dont joke... americans have a diferent taste. For dull. Bad quality . Chip and driveless cars and 0 dinamics. Puma its the opposite of all that.
I usually really love Ford stuff I've got one, but is this really the best you can do, although I cant stand any SUV, they strike me as we'll copy everyone else then manufactures wonder why sales go through the floor
Ok
Thanks for watching! What do you make of the Ford Puma?
like this comment 👍 if you think this is the best deep review on this model,I wish this is touch screen. this video should have lots of views.🙌🔥.. Could you pls make a review for Toyota Yaris Cross 2021 pls...🙏
Thank you for your suggestion, Mary. We'll see what we can do 👍
for the rational buyer only
25:11: let me impress you and instil confidence by stating a completely irrelevant fact...
Echo-sport....
The interior looks rather not modern maybe of an era 5 years ago.
Unfortunately to be expected since it's based on the 2017 Fiesta
The interior isn’t the best, but it’s not bas
There is people who like this interiro instead os the captur or juke girly looks.
That background music is awful!!!
Couldnt care less, boring vehicle, was hoping for the new RS but now this is scrapped. As the new focus st is so over priced i guessed they would have had to sell the MK4 RS for about £50-60k.waiting with excitement to see what the next bad decision Ford will make next.
