Zhou Shen wanted to sing it when he was younger but Gao didn't give his permission because he thought that Zhou Shen wasn't ready for it yet. Five years later Zhou Shen recorded the song and sent the demo to Gao. This time Gao allowed him to perform the song. I love the mysterious vibe. There are lots of interpretations of the lyrics on the internet but in one comment someone mentioned what the songwriter said about the meaning. It is about the loneliness and hopelessness of the "old intellectuals," a group of people who wasted and gave away their talents and potential because they were unfortunate enough to spend their young adult and adult years in one of the worst events in modern Chinese history: the Cultural Revolution.
