Yeah, these cutaway videos and stories help to improve my confidence that a) a line-twist or other malfunction isn't as terrifying as what I first imagined and b) as long as you stick to safety-first principles you're probably going to be just fine. Great video- awesome guys!
Thanks for making this video with the interview, as a complete beginner skydiver(only one tandem) who is looking to do the AFF course, cutaways are the thing that scare me the most, so to see people who have been in the sport for a long time being very sensible about them is comforting:) Keep up the great work, love the vids mate :)
Glad you enjoyed the video and good luck on your skydiving journey!! I plan on continuing to interview people who have had cutaways to help show new skydivers what to expect. Hopefully learn from the content. Just trying to help any way I can.
Just remember your EPs. I had a cutaway on my 17th jump as a student. It was a low speed malfunction but uncorrectable. It was the only thing I was really afraid of to the point I had told my family (who don't really like me sky diving) that if I had one as a student, I'd quit. Terrified the hell out of me when it happened and I made myself go back up and do 2 more jumps same day (terrible exits too due to getting tense) but it all worked out.
Just did my first tandem and definitely interesting in aff , its great to see videos like this for beginners to see veteran jumpers and how they react , calm cool and dont freak out!
One and only, after a few hundred, was at Deland. I thought my main was lost forever. Seemed like it until 1 day about a week and a half someone found it and returned it to the DZ. It had been in the sun but it wasn’t to bad. Could’ve been in way worse condition. Anyway Don’t give up it might just find it’s way home.
Awesome cutaway ! Glad you are safe , sorry you lost your canopy. I did a jump at Skydive DeLand in 2019 , Frazier was my instructor and Tiffany did my video. I had a ball 😁 !! No cutaways thank God 🙏. Blue skies to all at Skydive DeLand. 🪂🪂🪂🪂🪂🪂🪂🪂🪂
Thanks for another great video,......I had to just recently and it turned out quite bad. Keeping calm and remembering EPs is always the key, I will always be thankful to the ones who taught me ,and continue to teach and inspire. I would be too embarrased to post an interview , but it was a valuable experience I hope I never have to repeat,......keep up the good work , I'll make it up there someday soon.
Appreciate the support for the channel and glad you were able to stay calm and execute your emergency procedures!! Glad you walked away safe!! Blue skies!!
Hey man, consider sharing your embarrassment - you're still alive & maybe it could do the same for someone else - make it a teaching moment for those who haven't had the experience. Just a thought...& DON'T FORGET TO THANK YOUR PACKER (Without whom you wouldn't be around to ever have to worry about being embarrassed!!!)
One cutaway so far. Too rapid an opening, split that main 90% of the way from nose to tail down the center cell. No AAD. Was not knocked out - thank God! Reserve was a neon pink Raven.
@@SalvadorChangg I don't, thank you very much, but I regularly TARD an Ozone Rapidos 8m. When I was paragliding I had 2 Reserves... Good stuff thanks for posting.
Awesome video brother and lots of good information! Thankfully, I have never been under a reserve, even in the Army and I hope to keep it that way for as long as possible, lol... 😁🤙🏼
Try and keep the canopy symmetrical when packing it and maybe leave a little more line after your final stow or reduce your stows by one, this may help stop the bag from spinning. If you do get twists like this try and get the risers level chances are it will start to fly straight. Well done on pulling the handles. 🙂
IMO line twists are rarely related to packing and almost always a result of unstable and/ or asymmetric body position. In this particular case he had a quite hard opening which disturbed his position leading to uneven risers. The headdown prior to the deployment may have contributed to this. If you deploy with a stable and symmetric body position your canopy should fly straight (or turn slightly) even if you get several line twists (unless you're flying a heavily loaded high performance wing). Another tip which has always worked for me is to never fight the canopy during opening but let it turn you to whichever heading it goes.
@@SalvadorChangg 2. Last one was similar to this but more extreme. Line twist on opening, then self induced toggle fire because I didn't pay attention to where I grabbed the risers. That put the canopy into a dive with me on my back. Outside video looks like I lost around 500' for every rotation. Had about 2.5-3 rotations before I chopped. At the end of the day, doesn't matter what anyone say because this guy did the right thing and landed safely.
Wow, thanks for the quick response! Now I'm wondering about what I'm reading about skydivers bumping canopies on purpose for fun. I don't know anything but it doesn't sound safe, is it even 'allowed'?
I've never jumped yet. Been thinking about heading over to Skydive DeLand. But quick question. Who packs the reserve? I did a Google search and saw it has to be packed by someone certified by the FAA. It seems there's a lot more rules over who can pack the reserve vs the main. Is this true? My fear is, a rigger is having a bad day and is careless with the pack. With my luck he also happens to have packed the reserve.
Yes this is true, only a certified FAA rigger can pack a reserve parachute. I am a rigger myself and would only trust myself or someone I trusted greatly to pack my reserve. If I was a fun jumper I would make sure to ask around and get the best of the best to pack my reserve. Someone with a great reputation who does quality work.
@@SalvadorChangg I don't think that's a option in my case.. If I sign up for the AFF class at Skydive DeLand I pretty much get what ever pack I'm handed. I assume. Great 30 minute video on how to pack BTW. I watched the one where you took your time and showed us how to pack properly.
What happens if you pull your reserve while in your back? It looks like he may have swung on his back when he cut away and pulled his reserve anyway. I’m assuming it doesn’t matter?
Hey bro I’m catching up on all your vids Lol! I just got surgery in my stomach cause my appendix burst so I’ve been out for a while and just some crazy crap! Nice jumps though
My stomach really hurts lately, but I’m slowly getting better I just got home 2 days ago. It was not fun though, plus when the surgery was done the pain was worse than I’ve ever felt before so that’s why Ive been out
@@SalvadorChangg John inspired me to pursue becoming an instructor. Working towards that now so I can come work with the cool kids🤘 I'd love to be able to call Deland home
Hey Chang love ur videos man. Im actually trying to get into the parachute sport, could you make a video explaining from start to finish what needs to be done to get the licenses and cost of the process? Located in Miami usa 🇺🇸
hay guys this question has probably been asked before but with technology in this world surely some one Gould come up with a small tracking device perhaps some where in a riser to find your lost canopy again though you would not be helping the business that design canopy's😀

And that canopy was lost forever!!! Glad John made it! Love my fam at Skydive DeLand!
We love you too brother!! Hope you’re doing well!!
just wondering if it’s possible to attach an iTag inside the raisers of the canopy
That's why you practice your EP's over and over and over and over again (and into eternity)...it'll become automatic.
Exactly, should happen without even thinking about it!! Couldn’t agree more.

maybe dont fly head down and deploy at like 180mph
