It's not the corroded pins that's the problem, they are just an indication of water ingress, the ballast is under the light and if light is cracked or you get too much condensation it literally fills the ballast with water and the PCB inside fries. Had this on mine, I actually poured water out of my ballast lol
Check the headlight for cracks or poor sealing around lens, as that new balast dying suggest water is getting into the lens and filling the ballast with water. Had this on mine and had to replace the light as well. I also put large silica gel packs in the back of light to keep moisture building up.
Sounds just awesome on the road and even had a little twitch from the bank end driving sensibly, who needs a car stereo with an engine soundtrack like that 😁😁
Hi Dean, I'm new to your videos, but it's an absolute pleasure to see you going through the c63 step by step and most importantly in simple layman's terms, it's the way most of us think and that's what makes your videos an absolute pleasure & interesting. Keep up the good work Dean. I'm subscribed and enjoying now. Thank you. 😊👍😊👍

Hi from durham dean👋👍 great job on diagnostics for few issues always best when 2 of everything and can just interchange parts 👌 also do is a favour on first road test I noticed still had auction decals on windscreen please get rid before you hit roads ( I got pulled few month back after having a run and drive towed out of auction to drive under trade plate but never removed writing and was issued a discreet warning for what otherwise would of bin driving without due care (copper was nice tho 👍 ) so just scratched it off with a cd from car I purchased😂 and discreetly left the schene👌 just thinking of you mate thats all I know you love your job and us and we appreciate you too 👌 thanks for your time and be safe see you 👍👋
With such a great diagnotic tool at hand, it is maybe a good idea to bring the Topdon on the roadtest. It gives you the oppurtunity to read faultcodes and erase on the go. Also you can see live feed as you are driving... With the misfiring you might be able to see where it comes from at the roadside. As always a great video and a car I dream of, what a machine !
Great vid Dean with yours & Matt Armstrongs C63 it gives a proper idea of some the niggles & fixes that these need, personally I think it’s worth owning one just for that cold start snap 🤣
Looking at the mould / ballast corrosion and ignition electrical sensors would point towards a lot of moisture …. Flood ? Keep up the great work and content 🏆👊
Mould = interior flooded, not engine, so you need to worry about ECU units mounted in the cabin and worse in floor recesses under the carpet (if there are any) Terminals and PCBs corrode and cause random issues.
You should be able to graph the sensor outputs on that Topdon. Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics videos are worth a look. The guy is top notch with this sort of thing.
I hope I am wrong - but all the Merc V6 and V8s of this time period have problems with timing slippage - afraid it’s engine out to sort, this may be the reason the PO binned it.
I guess that I must have imagined this happening to our E350…a new sensor helped for a while…but it just got progressively worse before it eventually wouldn’t start with no compression
@@orlandobarron6557 there was a problem with teeth Sheering off some of the timing gear on V6 merc engines of this era causing engines to jump timing - but this never affected the m156 in any significant numbers.
Hi Dean, the new code reading gear certainly helps to sort out the issues. However, your good old fashioned reasoning and trial and error is complimentary to the technology. You are getting there with this beast, and selling it on sorted shouldn’t be an issue 👍😎
don't get caught out and start with the parts cannon the missfire problem could have been a poor connection , as you pointed out the green crusty in the head light ballast just a thought
Fingers crossed it's just the sensor. Fairly typical of these sensors to start failing from so many heat cycles. Once cool they have a habit of working fine but after a bit of a drive and getting heat soaked they fail. So hopefully this is what is happening with yours 😉 That Topdon is a nice bit of kit. That'd be AU$1700, plus customs and VAT, even with the deal but worth it for someone using such a thing regularly.
Flood damage will get you later on when corrosion has set in with electrical gremlins etc. most underwriters will by default write a car off if it’s been flooded.
@@SavingSalvage ahhh fair shout, wasn't aware that much time had gone by, amazing motors, had mine for near ten years, haven't found anything that comes close to the noise an drama, gearbox being lazy is completely normal. Just subbed cause of these vids, can't wait to see how it pans out 👍🏻
Hi Dean , what did you use to clean the tips? VVT sensors..... The sensors are garbage. There was a recall on the part when they were fitted to some 2l petrol in the US in 2005. Mercedes carried on fitting it and it still has the same problems namey it leaks oil into the interior and then gradually fails. It can also fill the loom up with oil as well wrecking the ECU. As me how I know. I still had two C63s and E63, great cars.
i would say looking at that ballast your headlight has a leak i would be checking for hair line cracks or a hole did the ballast have an o ring seal on it or in the light where the ballast goes? it should have keep up the good content cheers from down under
Does this engine have adjustable cam timing on the ex cams? If the sensor doesn’t fix the issue, I’d look into that. And I’m not sure if both banks are on the same timing chain, so one bank should be able to jump timing ewithout affecting the other bank. Nice series, been a VAG (Audi)/BMW fan for years now, nice to see you doing something different.
Being flood damaged insurance companies usually write them off if it’s flooded the interior of the car whether it dries out fine or not as that usually makes them not cost viable to repair
In case you weren’t aware you are only allowed to drive a car with no mot, direct to the mot garage (with a booked appointment) with some of the bad luck you have wouldn’t want you to get nicked mate.
That would make sense, as that ballast was late 2020 made. So that was the fix back then, it obviously suffers with water ingress so I may put some extra sealant in there to help keep moisture out

If you leave most cars shut up for a while like this one has been, you end up with mould on the steering wheel and seat belts.
Top job so far!, patience needed for this one👍
