Hey folks, when I filmed this video review in early 2018, the author, Akwaeke Emezi, stated on their Twitter profile that any of the pronouns “she/her;” or “they/them” were acceptable to them. I am well aware that Emezi has since publicly stated they wish to be referred to by “they/them” only. I do not have the time or inclination to redo this video, though.
Hah! Just finished this yesterday and a video shows up. You’re right: it was excellent. Loved the heck out of it on audio and will pick up a copy at some point to read again at some point. What a refreshing book.
Where did you listen to it? Can’t find the audiobook on audible or Yout
Just finished and I don't even know what to say!! As the kids say, I am shook! The narrator you didn't like was my favourite.
Well I am delighted it connected!
Wow! I love this. Please how are men portrayed in the text?
I'm reading this in a week or so!
Ooh I hope you enjoy it! I sure did
@@shawnbreathesbooks Oh boy, I loved it. My review is up and I am so glad that I read it. Now I can listen to your review and enjoy it without worrying about spoilers!
This was a great review Shawn! It's definitely on my tbr list, sooner rather than later!
Let me know how you get along with it!
I love your review and thanks for the link to the interview.
Thanks!
So, I just finished it Shawn and Oh My goodness, it’s just so different, actually audacious was the word that first sprang to mind. It’s such a hard book to describe without going into detail and all I knew initially was it’s about multiple personalities so when I first started reading I was confused but, luckily, I’m good at suspended disbelief or confusion and after twenty or so pages I was in for the ride. I actually liked the voice of Asughara the most although her behavior became a little repetitive, the idea of this other identity jumping in to protect Ada appealed to me and I liked her strength. I also loved how Emezi brought in Jesus or Yshwa making him a black god, although that kept changing, and a god who is flawed. The only part that I thought was kind of superfluous was Saint Vincent, I get that he was to balance the feminine identity as gods are non binary but he just seem kind of tacked on, would love to know what you thought about that. Anyway, thanks for bringing this book to my attention, and like you, I can’t wait to see what Emezi writes next!
I am absolutely DELIGHTED that you enjoyed it as much as you did! 😍
Been looking forward to this review to hear you gush about this novel. It just sounds so fascinating and moving. I will be buying it this month and getting to it in the next few months. Shame you didn’t like Kintu, it was on my anticipated releases list.
I bet you’ll like Kintu more than I did. Eric was certainly a big fan.
Aaaah I so want to watch this but I am going to save it as I plan to read Freshwater either this month or the next and want to go into it knowing as little as possible - it’s enough at the moment to know you rate it highly!
I sometimes do that too - hold off watching a review until after I read the book myself!
Goodness, I really wish I could review books outside too. Hooray for giving it five stars. It blew my mind too. Your review was way more coherent than mine- how do you do it? I will have to listen to the interview. Great Review Shawn!
Thank you! I enjoyed yours too!
This sounds soooo good. Basking in Books reviewed it too. I know you follow her as well (how do you actually get anything done. You follow everyone!😊)
I think you would love it! And that’s the pot calling the kettle black - I see you everywhere in everyone’s comment section, girlfriend! 😜
Awesome review!
🙋🏻♂️
Another one TBR. Don’t you love a book hangover?
Indeed!
Technically the author prefers to be referred to as "they." But it's all good. :)
Jenny Colvin No, her Twitter profile gives the full list of pronouns as being available. 😄
She is a 1 person...so how is their a they? Does she refer to the other personality as separate?
