Duplee hit the nail on the head about the young old heads having an idealistic view of the past (how they imagine it) rather than how it actually was. My ex gf is an Eminem stan who’s convinced that he is the greatest rapper of all time and constantly says that she “prefers old school hip-hop”, yet she’s never even heard of Wu-Tang, Big L, Rakim or any of the old school legends - except for Nas, whom I literally introduced her to lol.
It's probably less that they prefer "old hip-hop over new hip-hop", and more that out of touch people just generally prefer things they recognize. But they were out of touch THEN too, so their scope is limited. So the format usually goes, "I don't like (insert new thing), I prefer (extremely popular thing from 10-15 years ago)." Art, music, movies, etc. These people are everywhere.
This is embarassing to say, but hip-hop universe was actually my introduction to rap music. When I saw his "mumble vs lyrical rappers" lists I formed my own bias against the " mumble rappers " without even listening to them. Since then ive come to appreciate all styles of hip hop, and I think his newer takes especially saying that kendrick lamars album is bad because it didnt have sales is ridiculous. So apparently drake stans are idiots for using his album sales to justify him as a goat, but hip hop universe is a genius for saying kendricks album sucks because it didnt sell that much? And yea he is 100% an old school rappers stan, he put eminems MTBMB as album of the year when it was released despite there being over 100 albums better than it that year.
Hhu didn’t say that kendricks album was wack because it didn’t have sales. He says it was wack because he flowed like a mumble rapper, the beats sucked, and the message sucked. All you kdot stans do is just move the goal posts because kendrick flopped
Honestly the same thing for me. When i was around 10 years old i really liked the rap god song, Then I saw a video of him listing the best eminem songs, then the best rap songs in general and so on. I agree with the last point. Non americans who haven't witnessed hip hop and rap in general are more likely to have this kind of perspective or opinion. I'm saying this because I'm an Indian and I was introduced to hip hop through Eminem and Tupac. And when Eminem came out with Kamikaze, i also developed this mindset that new school rap is not "real rap". But thankfully after listening to a lot of new and old artists, I'm no longer like that. I think we should listen to whatever we want to listen to and let everyone else listen to what they want to listen to instead of giving out our opinion which obviously no one cares about. Anyways great video. A good end to a really good series. Kudos!

He's not only German but probably also Turkish. Pac is revered widely by people with migration history within hiphop as they are often discriminated against. Not only his strong focus of transporting values and his view of women gave a strong sign that he is a 'pious' try hard Muslim. He thinks he needs to keep Hiphop pure because he also obviously thinks it is bad for society as a whole and it is threat to his way of life. He is one of those people that are the least self aware because how many years of mental gymnastics do you exercise to ignore all the lyrics by old schoolers, that he himself adores, that promote violence, drug selling/use, misoginy and materialism. The counting of rhymes and such was the dead giveaway that he is from Germany because that annoying shit became a thing in the last decade by fans of battle rap tournaments. "Old school"... He's heard a small sampling of major label rap within a decade of the entire spectrum. He doesn't even know what old school is, and which old school is dope. I do hate all of this nonsense he does, but for good reason. Nostalgia isn't really a factor when what you digg spans decades. They are caught up in some hypercontrarian elitist Dunning Kruger addled smug narcissism. I love all of these bad influences being prevalent in music, I just like them done correctly, with sick wordplay and devastating delivery. X-Raided 'Unforgiven', Gangsta Dre 'Here Comes The Night', Young Droop '1990-Hate', J-Mack 'Movin', Crime Boss 'Conflicts & Confusion', C-Bo 'Tales From The Crypt', Brotha Lynch 'Season Of Da Siccness', Sav Sicc & Bleezo 'Twin Evil', Killa Tay 'Snake Eyes', Do Or Die 'Headz Or Talez', Woodie 'Demons N My Sleep', Lyrikal Warfare 'STL's Underground Kings' - All of these albums are pure treasure, and the music is timeless. Because something is new doesn't mean it's going to be good or better than something that's new to you because you haven't heard it yet. And vice versa, because something is new doesn't mean it's bad. Plenty of OGs continue to make new music that destroys, and some newer cats pop up and actually tear it up, too. I will admit, I am not really excited or confident about checking out brand new rappers. But I know multiple generations of folks love every album I mentioned. There are a lot of fads in rap, and styles that fizzle out. I have always hunted for stuff that never gets old. Nobody has a right to whine and cry about what is missing in rap or what is too prevalent, or saying definitively who is the flat out best, whether anybody's lyrically savvy these days or not, when they haven't even heard anything but what's fallen into their laps, or what's on the charts, or got/is getting major promo and expensive music videos... You're judging from an extremely small pool, and if you want to compare all of the artists within that shallow pool, okay, but that is not even close to enough of a sample size to say anything definitively about rap or hip hop and not be full of shi+! I always felt like, if you REALLY love this stuff, you'd be compelled to dig and drag the depths, through decades of countless artists and albums, to find the treasure. This cornball new old head poser doesn't care about rap at all, to be crying about nobody making anything he'd like, or there being a limited amount, or nobody likes what he does... There were many online video rap battles were people created their own music videos and rap disses against eachother (Rappersin, Juliensblog...). @@cash5512 don’t think any of them sound good. Young Thug sounds like he has a seizure on the mic, and I don’t consider Travis Scott as a mumble rapper since he doesn’t “rap”, he “sings”. Even so, I’ve tried forcing myself to enjoy his music, and for the most part, I just can’t. All of his songs are completely drowned in autotune. I’m fine with autotune in small doses, but when every single thing is autotuned, it just sounds repetitive and boring to me.
Travis Scott is not a mumble rapper
@@Darkstar_Dayne I agree, I see him as an autotune singer in the same vein as T-Pain
The gobbling is insane
Look, I watched HHU from 2019 or so, and, cringy list topic aside, I didnt think he was so bad. I mean, he said he actively despised everything Eminem dropped before Revival and after Encore, so he isnt completely blind.
And then I watched the first 3 installment of the Old-School vs New-School series and the second Worst Rappers list and those videos truly gave me physical pain. The preachy shit he put Especially in the Worst Rapper video was terrible
Bruh "Think of the kids" meanwhile Biggie was rapping about robbing gas stations and shooting mfs, and had an entire song about how to deal crack.
HHU acts like there wasnt abominably bad rap music in the 80s and 90s
I get that he prefers old school rap, which I personally do too, but shaming others and instantly saying everything new in rapping is bad and mumble crap is corny af, like I personally like a lot of new school rap songs, even tho I much prefer older rap, but I ain't shaming no one for liking the new stuff, cause it's way more diverse
@hezmo940 More diverse? Hahahahahahahahahahaha
Only if it's outside the mainstream!
Man, his tastes are completely generic, and he isn't even trying. If you loved rap, you'd be excited to discover some gems, and be down to dig even a centimeter to find stuff there is no shortage of
"Of course he's German" 😂😂😂😂
You know, at first I was like " ha ha this is funny" until 5:22 and I was " okay... WTF"
Rap commentary beef. Love it
"We Died for You, We Gave You Everything" is the funniest shit I seen in a hot min.
I’ve been subscribed to his channel since 2016. He used to upload unreleased versions and demos and leaks of old 2Pac and Dr. Dre songs, and other old school songs. Then he started making beef analysis videos and then lists and evolutions. What his channel is like now came around 2018-ish. You can see how he started tolerating new school rappers more and more but you can kind of tell he only did that to appeal to the masses. He’s never really been about new school hip hop. Not even the Kendrick’s and Cole’s
He genuinely has learning difficulties, and thats putting it lightly
As a german this guy is not representative of our taste lmao
He's not German nor is he from Germany
14:50 “do I look like a mf role model? To a kid looking up to me - life ain’t nothin but bitches and money”
- Ice Cube, Gangsta Gangsta, 1989
bro this series got me dying lmaooo. ngl, i was in my junior year when kamikaze dropped and i was a hugeeee stan. i still loved lil uzi and many other new artists but i used to watch channels like no life shaq just to circle jerk my wannabe old head opinions and whatnot. its so cringe its not even funny. but even back then, i never understood this whole "using a taste in music to feel surperior" to someone kinda thing.
regardless i was watching this without being logged in on a friends computer but holy shit man this was so funny i had to log in.... this is absolutely absurd haha you earned a sub tho keep the great content comin
In 2014 there was a huge wave of German YT Channels analyzing Rap Songs with score metrics for each category. There were many online video rap battles were people created their own music videos and rap disses against eachother (Rappersin, Juliensblog...).
Being able to perfom well in all certain "metrics" was generally valued more than making a good song and helped you to get favored by judges + earn potential prize money. This created an online culture where people were obsessed with old school Hip Hop + analyzing rap by "metrics".
While most people went on to listen to US Rap and got closer to the source of the culture, this dude definitly stayed in that old mentatlity.
maaaan, finally someone speaks shit on that channel out loud
18:22 "Tell me you're sexist, without saying you're sexist." moment ngl.
Great video man
Nah I gotta see this dudes playlist
Bro new school rap lyrics are too explicit?? Listen to dead wrong💀
Fucking any Lil Kim song😂
It pains me to say I had this hating mumble rap phase. But then I grew out of it. This guy didn't. I started listening to early Tyler music, then Earl, kendrick, Kanye and now I have a pretty huge palette. Thank god, I made those decisions.
