  • On February 22, 2017, Adam Purinton, a United States Navy veteran, walked into Austin’s Bar in Olathe, Kansas and singled out two South Indian men, Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, who were there enjoying happy hour. “He approached them, asking, ‘Are you here illegally?’” recounts Sunayana Dumala, Kuchibhotla’s wife, in the short film "Do We Belong?" “Srinivas being Srinivas, he was polite. He tried to answer, ‘I am here on a work visa.’ But [Purinton] thought that Srinivas was from Iran and he was here illegally. I think that’s why he said, ‘Get out of my country,’ before he shot Srinivas down.” Kuchibhotla was killed that day. Read more: www.theatlanti...

    This woman sounds like a wonderful, caring person. I hope she gets many blessings, a better future, and someone she loves, to have a good life again. Hatred is not the answer. Racism or hate based on language accent or religion or such things is not right. There are good and bad people everywhere. I have known several Indian folks, and nearly all were fine people, open and friendly if given a chance. Sure, a few are not, but that's true anywhere. It saddens me that good people suffered a loss like this, just because an ignorant racist chose hate over decent sense. Our country must not let racial or other prejudice spread. It's wrong, it's a poison, and it only brings sorrow to decent people for no good reason.

      Let's see; a distant relative put together a family tree and according to that family tree, my family came to this country before the War Between the States. I haven't looked at it in years but if my memory serves me right, our family came from Europe. We arrived on the East coast and dirt poor. However sprinkled here and there were an occasional slave owner but not very successful. From the Virginia's and Carolina's, we migrated south and westerly. Have I given you enough ammunition to attack me now? By all means, go for it.

    • @humility1319
      @humility1319 6 лет назад

      Oh come on David; get a grip on your emotions and think with your brain. Try this if it helps; pretend you are planning to leave your home country, all those you have ever known, uproot your immediate family and face up to the fact that you might not ever see your parents again or your siblings. But hey, your plans might include bringing every Tom, Dick, Harriet and distant relative to America once you get a foothold here. Now ask yourself what motivates a person to go to such extremes. Was it fear? Was it religious freedom? Are you a criminal escaping justice in your own country? What would cause you to do this? Every immigrant has a different reason and some are genuinely worthy reasons. Maybe your wife or child has serious medical issues and America can save them somehow. India has some of the best medical facilities in the world. If you have the means to pay to get to America, you probably have the means to pay for medical care in India. All my neighbors are legal, hard working immigrants too. We're all immigrants or descendants of immigrants. This woman and her husband weren't peasants escaping a life of toil and hardship. Since I asked the questions, I'll answer them according to my viewpoint. I have met my fair share of Indians in my professional life and from what I've learned, most come to this country for one thing. Greed. They want money. They want to keep their way of life but they want America's freedoms. They don't want our food. They don't want our religion. They don't want to assimilate and wear American style clothes. They want to teach their children their first language at the same time they want them to learn English. Most learn English in Indian schools. Immigrants don't care what Americans think; they come anyway. They know the risks and still they come. For every job an immigrant takes, an American somewhere lost out. I paid a tremendous price for my education, sacrificed and went without so I could compete professionally for a better way of life. I was successful compensating for my poor beginnings and lack of financial support. It's bad enough I had to compete against the "haves" in my own country. Why should I have to compete with the "haves" from another country like India and other places? Employers make allowances for those who don't speak the native language very well. Indians are dark skinned and they get advantages because of affirmative action programs. I read a story online where an Indian got into medical school simply because he said he was black. I don't like violence and killing. I just don't care if life takes a dark turn for immigrants who shouldn't be in our country in the first place. Now, let me have it commenters!

    Dehumanizing people you select as enemies is as old as humanity itself. It was cultivated by the worst regimes ever documented and is one of fascism's most significant trademarks.

    The tone comes from the top. Until the American president stops calling people animals (if they are brown) we will see more of this. We are only as strong as our weakest link. The shooter saw brown; and, with the blessing of his president, decided to carry out the wishes of his president.
    That said, this was a very inspirational piece. It gave me hope that there are still people who haven't been swallowed up in the frenzy of hate and despair. These are the people that will bring us back from this nightmare of hate once it is all over.

      Law enforcement and government in Mexico, Central, and South America have a big problem: corruption. It isn't uncommon to have a drug dealer as a politician, it isn't uncommon for drug dealers to sit on board of directors of major corporations or be big shareholders. Money is funneled easily to a beat cop whose life is in danger by going into the 'hood to do his job and get paid shit, to the president. Nobody cares if gang violence escalates into a literal civil war, which is what happened in El Salvador for example. They don't care if the gangs run drugs or go over the border. They don't care if they are sent back, because it got to the point where gangbangers regardless of status (meaning if you are still active- and there are those running from their own clique because if you leave you die) now law enforcement will target them for murder. This creates more instability in the country, and what do you get? More migration. So what to do? Target corruption by saying we won't trade with you or put on sanctions? It doesn't work in the long run, if one country produces something another country needs/wants they honestly don't care about the state of the society. The wrong people are being put in government, what will it take for the right people to be put in?

    • @wrongway1100
      @wrongway1100 6 лет назад +1

      knavishknight Since they are undocumented, how can anybody claim correctly they are committing crime at a lower or higher rate? You would have to know they are undocumented first, in which case, they are now documented to be cited as a source for a study. Also in the state of CA local law enforcement is not allowed to aide ICE, and cannot arrest illegal immigrants or report them to Federal agencies should they commit a crime. This means local law enforcement will not file reports if the crimes were commited by illegals. This means your source will have incorrect information stating crime rates perpetrated by illegals, giving lower numbers. What I am saying is your source is flawed.
      Also Trump called MS-13 animals not all immigrants. Also if immigrants are undocumented, how do you know if they are good or bad. You are going to get a mix of both and sense bad people don't want to be documented they are not going to go through the proper channels. In a way, Trump is corrupt.
      Mexico is a very corrupt nation with Politicians bribed by the Cartels. If things get to bad their and if the people couldn't leave, there would be a revolution. This has happened before in Mexico several times. However with an open border just north, the Mexican government can open the nozzle and alliviate the pressure that would otherwise lead to an overthrow. In the end nothing changes and nothing gets better for Mexico, it's former citizens, the US who now pays for the refugees, its citizens, or those who entered legally. Everybody suffers and nobody wins except the drug Cartels and corrupt Politicians who will use the sympathies of the relocated to stay in power all while not fixing the problems they were elected to fix.

    What I dislike the most about stories like this is the ignorance of the perp. People from India look very different than people from Iran. They wear different clothes, They have different accents and mannerisms. I remember the first time I heard of something like this. Sikh man in a busy city in California longed for more elbow room. So he moved to Arizona, and bought a gas station. Sikh men don't cut their hair, so they often wear a turban to manage it. They also often wear a bracelet. Sikh are not Muslims, it is a very different religion. This man was gunned down by an angry teenager who was mad at the muslim politics and terrorism across the world. This man just wanted some peace.

    • @JackHY2K
      @JackHY2K 6 лет назад

      There are lots of Iranians and Indians where I am. I'm not so sure about them wearing different clothes (In the west Iranian women don't tend to wear shawls and neither do Indian women). The accents are different but to an untrained ear they sound pretty similar just like English and Australian accents. Mannerisms? They're similar yet distinct.
      Iranians and Indians can look alike but the similarity is mainly between Persians, Balochis, and North Indians. Not so much South Indians (which these 2 victims are). You can find Iranians from the southeast (Sistan and Balochistan) who resemble these 2 but this region only makes up like 1-2% of Iran's population.
      Anyways, whether they are/were Iranian or Indian they didn't deserve to be shot. I'm glad the shooter is now in prison.

Anywhere in the lower Midwest or upper South also gets some of the worst weather in the US to go along with social conservatives and mostly living in the past.
