    I went into this video thinking it was gonna be a rant about how Schott was actually overpriced and overhyped, and why an even more expensive jacket is better in every way. Was pleasantly surprised and I really liked the way that you assessed what makes the Rainbow Country jacket better put together overall, while still praising the Schott for what it was, and why it is still a good jacket in it's own right. The Schott Perfecto is definitely more my style of jacket, and the type I just like more in terms of appearance due to me having a more casual style, and for me it already seems very premium. However, this video has made me very impressed in just the sheer amount of effort and craftmanship that goes into even more expensive jackets as well as the sourcing of the materials. I can definitely see why it has such an appeal to those who are really looking for the absolute best.

      Thanks for the comment! I think bringing expectations to meet reality is always the ideal. Great review and very accurate in regarding good quality jackets. It is a bit frustrating when I see other guys saying in their videos that vanson and schott jackets are a low quality jacket and your explanation here explains it very well. As an old guy ..lol I chalk that up to video person being young and lack experience and as a person that has been wearing schott jackets for 30 plus years that is just how I see it. Thanks Bob I appreciate it. I think Schott and Vanson make great jackets, and for many folks can be that “grail” endgame jacket. Some folks either have more money or a desire to go deeper down the rabbit hole, and that’s ok too! But no need to knock one as “low quality” or the other as “too expensive”

I really admire your profound knowledge and good eye for details in this specific field. - Although I admit, that the beautiful luxury jacket is absolutely state of the art and certainly made of leather from the highest imagineable caliber, I will continue to stick to my most favorite perfecto style leather jackets, where for instance my "luxury" jacket, the custom made Langlitz Columbia, which is my most expensive one, is still cheaper than this rainbow jacket. - Thank you for sharing, peace and lets rock our leathers, haha..! I have 3 Schott jackets: 618, 626vn and Dur-O-Jac. Dur o jas is actually my favorite. It's shorter than 618. Measuring from neck seam to bottom in the middle of the back the measurements on mine are as follows: 618(46)=25.5, Dur-o-Jac (46)-24 3/4 and 626VN(XL)=26. I got Duro-O-Jac on ebay for 130. It was made in 1992 and was like brand new. I got 618 also on =ebay for 495 from Japan and it was like brand new. I got 626VN at Lucky Brand store as a return and paid 420. I like them all but 618 and DuroJac are best for motorcycle and casual every day wear the 626VN but I don't like how it's longer. I like the shortest of the 3 the best which is Dur-O-Jac which also has slightly shorter sleeves and more room in the shoulders but also tighter at the waist with a waist snap that is very useful.

      Hey Johnny! Yeah I like the 613s quite a bit and am considering changing my “main” Schott jacket to either the 613s or 613sh. Both are great, the main difference I think from a day to day standpoint is the shine of the horsehide vs the more matte steerhide. Completely a matter of personal taste. That being said, the horsehide shine will diminish somewhat with wear, while you can apply Vaseline or other products to increase the shine of matte leathers. Try to go with whichever one feels most compelling and you’ll probably be happy

    I’ve been through many Japanese brands these years like Freewheelers Finecreek Real McCoy Toy McCoy The few Rainbow country Cushion man Buzzrickson…… I even went to Japan several times. To be honest, they are good but definitely not worth the money for the retail price. Japanese company like to take hunger marketing and make brag story about their products. The leather texture and tea core of Japanese brands are beautiful but for the durability, I still believe American brand like schott vanson langlitz are significantly better.

    • @DudsByDel
      @DudsByDel  11 месяцев назад +2

      In general I’m a fan of buying used, so I take the retail prices as a starting point. Also considering the current Yen to Dollar conversion, the actual prices for Japanese goods are much lower than they have been in recent past. As always, some folks will prefer to buy new, and it’s easier to compare retail price vs retail price since it’s not as much of a moving target as used prices

    Hey del! I would love to see you review leather jackets out of the heritage niche. As a leather jacket enthusiast, I feel like content and discussion around leather jackets always tends to stay within a niche. I’d say schott and rainbow country are both solidly heritage jackets.
    Other niches could be italian fine luxury jackets (brunello cuchinelli, valstar), avant garde leather jackets (carol christen poell, rick owens, guidi), high fashion (saint laurent, celine).
    I would love to see some cross pollination of sorts, in order to understand the common characteristics that make up a good leather jacket. And to expand my horizons from just whats discussed in the heritage echo chamber.
    I think your take would be especially interesting because you have a knack for discussing specific tangible details, rather than beating around the bush talking about a general “quality” that other reviewers do.

    • @DudsByDel
      @DudsByDel  11 месяцев назад +2

      Hey Will I like that idea. Considering I’m less likely to actually keep many of those styles since they’re outside my typical preference, the main question is safely procuring them for review

    • @wills-ol3so
      @wills-ol3so 11 месяцев назад +3

      Now why’s such a cross pollination interesting?
      Because every “peak” of a niche is the best of a certain quality enthusiasts are looking for.
      I find most heritage enthusiasts are looking for mostly the bests in two qualities, durability and craftsmanship. Schott would be a “peak” in durability, and rainbow country would be a peak in “craftsmanship”.
      However you hint at other qualities in your review. The way the pattern is cut to lay on the body. Stitch quality. And maybe even the character of the leather.
      How do fine leather jackets from italian houses primarily known for their suiting compare in pattern and how it lays on the body when compared to a schott, vanson, or a rainbow country?
      Shinki horsehide is beloved for its character. How it stacks. And the teacore. How does it compare to avant garde leathers treated in crazy and artisanal ways from guidi and carol christian poell? Guidi horsehide especially, is known for its rolling stacks and teacore. How does it compare to shinki on a jacket?
      I think interesting jackets can be found everywhere, and I’m just curious how the bests of each niche stack up when put side by side. its almost never done! everyone stays in their niche mostly! like boxers only fighting boxers, and kung fu masters fighting kung fu masters. I want to see some MMA!

      @wills-ol3so 11 месяцев назад +3

Id imagine gentleman’s gazette has some fine leathers, and someone like sangiev has tons of high fashion leathers. david moseer would be *the* expert in everything artisanal - the mans in so deep he created his own brand, skinnosh

    The Rainbow horsehide jacket is so shiny that, due to my ignorance, I find looks cheaper than the Schott. It also looks thin and papery almost but only because it looks more like faux leather to me than high quality. I think that’s because horsehide being rare, we or at least I don’t see enough examples to have a good mental reference for it. Which is a shame. It’s kind of odd in a way that there is this small middle ground where an inexperienced person can discern and select good quality but go too far towards cheap or luxury and assumptions and limited experience will leave the average person completely confused and or just not looking the way they think they do.

      @@DudsByDel For the most part I’d say you’re 100% correct about handling them in person. Although take, for instance, kangaroo leather. I’ve never handled it before but my understanding is it’s the strongest leather by weight of any leather. Which implies to me that items made from it could be thinner than any item made from other leathers and remain rugged and durable. To me, even in person, it might come off cheap just due to how big of a hick I may be. Either way, videos like this are great for the education as there are a lot of swindlers out there that are really good at what they do ready to take me and those like me to the cleaners.

    70% of your money is paying for the brand names. The reason why those high end Japanese brands cost more is that 1. they are actually unable to purchase large volume of leather material from i.e Shiki leather factory so the cost of each piece of leather is higher 2. not many employees i.e Teijin only has 4 employees who can make the jackets. Imho you do not have to spend more money to purchase good quality and well designed leather jackets as long as the jackets are made by talented hands. On the other hand, you are free to purchase anything you like since it is your own choice

  • @JoblessJoshua
    @JoblessJoshua 4 месяца назад +1

    What I find disappointing about the high end Japanese leather brands, even ones that sell jackets for $3000+ is that there's an inside horizontal seam near the zipper. Why couldn't they just make it one seamless piece? Even luxury brands that use lower quality lambskin can have the inner leather lining (near the zipper) as a single piece, and not 2 pieces with a seam. I know nobody can see it from the outside, but if you're the one wearing it, it just feels bad that the whole jacket is made properly, except that 1 part
