How To Paint Any Bike, Scooter or Moped Step-by-Step and Get PRO Results

- Hey, it’s Tony! Thank you for watching the video and checking out the blog today. Here’s my 1998 Honda Elite SR scooter project and in this blog, I’ll show you how to paint any bike, scooter or moped step-by-step and get pro results.
First is take all the panel off, do sanding and bodywork and get it ready for paint. I’ll do a nice custom paint on it and make it look totally awesome.
I’m also fixing up the wheels. I’ll prime and paint the plastic cover on the wheels with the same color as the body.
First is to feather out the scratches and decals with a 150-grit dry sand and make sure that all panels are clean before bodywork. The 150-grit is not that rough so it won’t scratch out the plastics.
After sanding and feathering out all the scratches on the panels, even the stickers, I have to wet sand all parts with 400-grit sandpaper. Then, apply glaze putty on all scratch and scuff marks.
Next, I’ll apply high build filler primer over bare plastic areas. Make sure to spray two to three coats of paint for complete coverage. I used the Warwick 903G Spray Gun on this. It’s available at the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint Shop.

Those that we don’t want painted, we will leave it covered with painter’s tape. The rest will be masked off later.
I sprayed red basecoat for the multicolor flames with the Warwick 878SHE Mini Spray Gun which is available at the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint Shop.
Once you’re done, you can take off the fine line and masking tape then you spray two to three coats of high gloss clearcoat.
Then, spray two to three coats of clear at 28-30 PSI (not cap pressure). On the last coat of clear, don’t be afraid to lay it on. Then, I sprayed all the inner plastic black with SEM bumper paint.
When you’re done, get them all together again but be careful not to scratch the new paint job.

Lacquer scares the heck out off me, find it so hard to lay down without over doing it and getting runs. Saying that even basecoat puts me on edge.

GlitterGoddess cool! well, if you spray it on think it will come off nice. It dries flat, so it won't look like it came out of a spray can :) and thanks for the comment on the lil one. :)

Hey man! Do you have to spray the black plastic with cleaner or primer before spraying the SEM bumper coating??
Would you need a spray gun or can you just use paint straight of the can in layers? Also do you need to do that last step or is it just recommended
Can you spray base coat over filler primer? Or filler primer, then regular primer then base coat?

I dont want to have to sand alot. Im wondering if the factory matte white finish that a scooter comes in, is okay to just straight up start painting on it. Im thinking about making custom paint jobs on brand new motorscooters. What I figure is that its gonna have a rough surface, that no matter how many gloss coats you try to put on, it still looks flat because I never sanded, just painted on a matte surface to begin with.

What is that blue glaze putty? I can't really find any conversion in italian market, never ever seen that thing. Is it a bondo-like item?

RaptorArk It's not a lacquer glaze putty as ***** said. I used to use that red stuff Nitro-Stan, but... it's just old and outdated now. The Acryl-Green Polyester spot putty by 3M that I used dries hella fast and does not shrink after curing. It's great stuff for light scratches and nicks. It's great for quick repairs and a tube will last you years. I've had this tube for over 3 years. I talk much more about it on the site and in other videos. Thanks!

I don't have all the fancy spraying material so i would just get some spray cans at the store so with that in mind what could i use to get a nice protective seal over the paint?

Yes you can but not for large projects!

Can I not spray paint it without taking the parts off? I want to change the colour of my bike but I'm just too lazy to strip it down if I'm honest. Surely if I mask the parts up that I don't wanna spray I'll still be good?
Adam, it's all up to you. If you want to do a better paint job, I'd prefer taking parts off. Really depends how good a paint job you want your project to be!
