Do not aim the flame at the leaves and grass leaves of the plant, but at the center to hit the root as much as possible. leaves and grass will dry later anyway, you have to burn the root as much as possible. I also use it myself - a phenomenal tool.
Does work. Just not as effective when there's a breeze. It's the blue flame that does the business anyway. Used before a power wash to reduce a year of growth on the driveway which by spring is almost a lawn. The battle continues....
I bought one, it really didn't do what it says on the tin, I tried to burn weed and grass but its way too big to carry around with you, the old bill knows you have a stash when they see you with it and arrest you, my advice is get a Clipper or a Zippo far easier to light up some weed or grass and less conspicuous 😉

Its actually cheaper than some creme brulee burners! Maybe you could demo that more practical application for us!
