I got a story for ya... my parents were married, my mom took my dad's name (DeMasters), married for 20 years, divorced, mom keeps DeMasters. 15 years later my mom remarried, my dad asks her, "so you're changing your name?" My mom doesn't miss a beat, she says, "oh no, he's changing his name to DeMasters" ahahahahaha the look on my dad's face was priceless! Of course my step dad didn't take DeMasters, but from time to time over the years people would assume that he and my mom had the same last name and call him "Mr. DeMasters". It's one of those running jokes that keeps on giving & giving.
My Gran was married a total of 5 times. Some of them hurt her mentally and/or physically and one threatened to kill her. After the second or third time she stopped changing her name. She said it was too much of a hassle changing he name on everything (bills, license est...). So she said to hell with it and went back to her original last name. She was an incredibly strong woman who managed to not only survive but raised 4 children and keep them healthy and out of trouble. She did this in a time and place where if a girl turned up pregnant she wasn't allowed to finish high school; she was expected to marry the father of her child and become the perfect house wife. Shout out to all the women out there who are single moms or getting out of abusive relationships, y'all are loved and stronger than some would like for you to know.

Officially, legally, it was back to my maiden name, but I never even had time to change over IDs and such. And the reason I only had 3 days is because some states make you wait a year or more before they will even file the papers for the divorce, and if the ex is an ass, they can refuse to accept the papers 3 times via registered/certified mail, and then they must be served by the sheriff’s office, and then if they can’t be found, the declaration must go into local papers for like a month. And THEN the decree can go onto the court docket, and depending on the size of the county where you live, it can take another 1-2 months to get heard. And that’s with an uncontested divorce.
My mom and father got divorced when I was a few months old. She kept his name because she didn’t want it to be even more confusing for me. I can’t wait to go with my mom to get her name changed back. It’s about time. I’m also going to be taking my grandpa’s last name when that happens. It’ll definitely be a joyous occasion!
