I wish he taught an art history class. Mr. Marshall brings so much life and questions to be asked within his work.

He taught studio art classes, which means you are being taught art history if you're in his art class.

Brilliant. Thank you mcac. Never have I heard anyone put so concisely the systematics of the art world and the necessary requirements to stand in that world. KJM. Incredible.

Mr.Marshall deserves a Master Class video. This offering is way too short for such a master. He lays it down not only for himself but for future and aspiring artists. My only critique is in the production of the video. When showing the individual works, the names of the works would have been helpful to those not that familiar with Mr.Marshall's work instead of waiting to the end and display it in the credits. Most museum videos do this.Otherwise I appreciate the offering.

Holy shit. This guy's really, really good. Must do more research. Some amazing paintings in there. And he can talk about art and painting, unlike some conceptual artists (Koons, Hirst, McCarthy). Really interesting.

That was spot on and to the point what Kerry said about mastery...every artist starting out should heed his words.

He also said 'Mastry'; and this man needs to be Listened to, and Heard by anyone who considers herself or himself a serious artist working in the world today and anyone headed in that direction. I went to art school too, and had some fine instructors, and I was about to say I wish I'd had a Kerry James Marshall as a teacher, but we're the same age, so that wouldnt've worked out on this particular plane; that's OK because we both gotta get back to work. The truth is just so damn pretty when it's being applied with honesty and wisdom. It may hurt, but sometimes it needs to.

Quite wonderful to listen to. I'm glad there is a lot of content of his interviews and lectures available online. His style reminds me of Alex Katz and Henri Matisse, among many others. I really like the first two works of his new blackbird series.

Making some really strong points at the end. Symbolism is a powerful thing if you use it right. There’s an artist named Serge Gay Jr. who’s art seems almost directly inspired by this man. Recommend anyone who likes this also check him out.

Why "Mastry" instead of "Mastery"? What are we supposed to make of this misspelling or intentional butchering of the word mastery? Mr. Marshall is articulate and smart. His paintings are full of meaning and he is a very accomplished painter. Is the title trying to take away from that? I seriously don't get it.

it means you gotta paint as good as those guys who are deemed as masters, and then do it your own way
