    IS THIS BETTER ADAPTATION THAN DISNEY VERSION?
    YES.

      Pinned for truth. It isn't a great adaptation either, but it's better than Disney. Then again, it isn't hard to be more faithful to the novel than Disney was.

      Kay I still enjoy the Disney movie. It made me read the novel and I've come to love Hugo's works so very much. Disney did a decent enough job with staying true to the spirit of the novel at least.

    Wow - I didn't expect to like this, but I ended up really enjoying it. It's simplified without losing the essence of the book (dumbed down or "for kids"), and Quasimodo's just adorable. The ending's too simple, though, obviously. Thanks so much for uploading this!

      Burbank Films Australia's films were generally stuck between being more faithful to the original works (they were all based on classic novels, rather than fairy tales) and being appropriate for all audiences. For this reason, their entertainment value often paled in comparison to Disney's (who often took great liberties in faithfulness to ensure appeal and entertainment) and might have been the reason as to why they've fallen out of fashion. Still, animation fans might get a treat from discovering some of them. My personal favorites include The Three Musketeers, Kidnapped, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Peter Pan and Oliver Twist (this last one belonging to a series specializing in Dickens' novels, with all works amounting to 72 minutes in length rather than 48).

    This Esmeralda resembles the real one in the original novel, I think..She was white skinned (and beautiful), but as she'd dance under sun light only her arms became brown skinned.. not her overall body was in brown color...After all she was a native french woman's daughter..

    This actually isn't that bad. Sure the animation is old and low-quality, but it's a nice and more faithful adaptation of the original book. Understandable that they changed the ending, nearly every movie of this story does to make it more happy; though I felt that the ending was rather rushed and cut off. But even so, I think it's worth watching at least once.

    Looking at this version of Quasimodo, this is likely where Disney got their character design from. They're so similar in that they both have red hair, a green tunic, and lump over their eye. Then again that might just be how he is described in the book. Disney also likely left out the fact that he was deaf because then that would cause a lot of communication issues and it'd be hard to work around that.

      Actually, while Quasimodo does have red hair and an asymmetrical face in the book, he's described wearing a bright red and purple tunic with little bells on it. So for some reason they chose to make his costume more dull and muted when making an animated adaption for kids, funnily enough.

    I remember seeing this on television back in 1996, actually, after seeing the Disney version. Yes, I admit that Disney were the ones who really introduced me to the story, since I was about the right age (11) when this film was released. This version is more faithful to Hugo's original tale than Disney's, but I think it's unfair that Disney got so much flack for adapting "Hunchback" (because of their Disneyfication) when they weren't the first to adapt it in the animated form. At least this version has a happy ending after all.
    This movie is fine enough, but I prefer Disney's take. And Esmeralda's last line to Quasimodo is something that could've been said in the Disney version.

      Right, I meant that when I personally saw this version was about two years before the Disney version came out. It was first released, as you said, about a decade before the Disney version…but that was before I was born :)

    Burbank Films Australia's films are generally quite good. Even though they were made in the late 80s, they employ a visual style reminiscent of popular 60s television specials, albeit with more artistic watercolor backgrounds. They provoke a sense of nostalgia for bygone forms of storytelling, and offer solid introductions to significant works of more adult literature. Its sucessor studio, Burbank Animation Studios, on the other hand, is a joke. They provide entertaining adaptations completely devoid of artistic merit -in fact, visually these are quite cringe-worthy.

    Why did Burbank remake its own movie? This is a masterpiece?

    • @gabrielzayas2251

      It's not a remake it's an adaptation of Victor Hugo's book; remake it's a term for reimagine version that is not based on any source material.

    I don't like how they portrayed the beggars as all being liars and fakers.
    although some ofc had to fake it so they could make a penny, a lot of them were just unfortunate ...teaching children that poor people don't deserve your care because they are all crooks...wow.

    • @markcobuzzi826
      @markcobuzzi826 7 лет назад +3

      I thought this version still made it clear that the Romani vagabonds were only acting in that way out of desperation to survive (whether certain individuals were faking it or not), since no one would offer them real work to do and they were being constantly brutalized by an unjust Medieval system.
      The movie still had Esmeralda as a good person, who was both compassionate to Gringoire/Quasimodo, and considered the poor people in the Ghetto as her family. Clopin also explicitly points out how cruel the Nobility's court systems were to his people, that he was treating outsiders of the ghetto the same way out of fear/retaliation, and that his treatment of Gringoire is still merciful by comparison. His point is first proven when Quasimodo is interrogated by the deaf judge, has his trial treated as a comedic spectacle, and publicly both whipped and humiliated for something that was not truly his fault. I then see it proven even more, when Esmeralda is tortured into falsely confessing murder and witchcraft, when people like Frollo and the prosecutor are pulling the strings to get what they want or persecute outcasts they do not like, rather than being interested in any real justice or holiness.
      So I would still say that both the original book and this particular adaptation still shows the outcasts in a sympathetic light and that the real monsters of the story were the hypocrites in high society, rather than the outcasts that were judged as "unholy savages."

    • @blondbraid7986
      @blondbraid7986 7 лет назад +2

      Depressingly enough you can still see Romani people begging on the streets in modern Europe today, because many of them are still a persecuted and marginalized minority. Unfortunately, many books and movies still portray Romani/Gypsies in a romantic light as as happy vagabonds with magic powers.
      Victor Hugo was in many ways ahead of his times in his portrayals of the poor and unfortunates in both The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables.
