    I watched the other videos about upgrading that you mentioned.. they were good but yours seemed easier to understand if you're a person who hasn't done before and is interested in trying to do their own upgrading (like me!) I appreciate your explanations. I just ordered an XPS 15 and went into it with the understanding that I will be able to upgrade certain components in the future. Thanks very much!!

    Here I am in 2024 watching this video to upgrade my xps15 9570 I bought 5 years ago, I plan on using it another 3 years, I upgraded to windows 11 and dual boot to Linux, i agree the WiFi it come with sucks fortunately i use it mainly over LAN. I'll re do the thermal paste, upgrade the ssd to 1TB and change the WiFi card. Thanks for the video, it helps me a lot.

    i totally agree with you i own 9570, really i m happy with the purchase 2 yrs back, future ready laptop always helps to save your money in few years, i spend extra on buying 4k screen model, at this time i have ipad 2021 M1 still the dell xps is beast real life.

    Totally agree Paul. I have this same laptop and configuration. I’ve had it for a while. Works great for Captivate as well as many other programs. And I’m someone that tends to have multiple programs open at the same time as Captivate as well as VMs and I have no issues at all. I did upgrade my RAM and SSD at purchase. Looks like I could have saved some $$$ which I’ll keep in mine next time.

    • @CaptivateTeacher

      Yeah, upgrades from the manufacturer are usually a little inflated. It would have not only cost me more to get these upgrades from Dell, the SSD wouldn't be as fast. I've actually since upgraded it again to the 2TB version of the same drive. The next upgrade for me will be a new machine.

  • @nadtz

    I have a 2+ year old 9560 I'm finally getting around to upgrading because some keyboard keys died on me, once I ordered the t5 and kb I started looking around and upgrading to a faster 1tb + memorry + wifi is substantially cheaper than it was when I first got this thing. Then figured since I have to pull the motherboard out anyway might as well repaste it. While I'm totally comfortable doing this this was still a good video, been binge watching upgrade and repair videos to get myself worked up to do this since I'm not really looking forward to it, but at least pulling this apart isn't nearly as much of a pain as my razer blade is.

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  4 года назад

      I always get that nervous feeling like I'm about to make a mistake that will cost me my two thousand dollar investment. In this case it was super easy and I would be comfortable doing this process again. I'm into tech but I'm not a technician.

      @@CaptivateTeacher I've been working on hardware for almost 20 years now and I've been HP and Dell certified in the past. Laptops are just more annoying to work on by nature, though dell and older Lenovo/IBM laptops are generally much less of a pain than a lot of other brands I've worked on. I'm still very happy with this laptop even though it's 2 (3?) generations old at this point, didn't think i'd care that much about the 4k screen when I got it but I've come to love it even though I don't use the touch option pretty much at all.

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  4 года назад

      @@nadtz I looked at some additional options when I was shopping for this laptop a year ago. I realized that touch wasn't going to be valuable and 4K wasn't a huge benefit for me either.

    • @nadtz
      @nadtz 4 года назад

      @@CaptivateTeacher I only got the 4k screen because I got great deal on a refurb unit. At the time the 4k model new was still around $2k I think, I got mine for $1400 which was actually less than a 1080 unit new. Also got the 512 SSD which I got lucky and they gave me at the time one of the better SSD's Dell was using. The fact that I'm still very happy with this laptop 2 years later says a lot, I usually swap laptops every year but I've been happy enough with this unit that I'd rather fix it and upgrade it than replace it.

I agree the write difference is incredible -- 5x -- but given that it's already so fast, in what actual situations did you find it was much faster?? In what circumstances are you able to benefit from that additional speed-up? (I have this machine and am strongly considering the upgrade, but don't want to drop 500 bucks if I don't have to)

    Great video :) I actually didn`t unplug the battery on one occasion, i think it was when i took out the ram to take a photo of the label on it. but the next time i unplugged it when i changed the wifi card, or maybe it was the other way round... Laptop is working great, just as good as it was prior to me even opening the back of it. Maybe it was just luck that the battery was still plugged in while i was `fiddling around` with the hardware...I`ll be more mindful nex`t time. Ive built all my own computers (all desktop machines) since 2004, so maybe i was just lazy when i saw the plug on the battery was awkward to pull out and i thought maybe it will be ok, so i left it plugged in. Im actually going to put new thermal paste on both chips as this is a used 9570 that i bought a week ago, so its a good time to do some maintenance with it :)

    Awesome video! I noticed the ssd had a thermal pad but it did not have a heatsink. Is it bad to use a thermal pad on the ssd without a heatsink? I am getting a xps 15 9500 and wanted to know if I should get thermal pad + a thin copper heatsink for the second ssd (it has two ssd slots). And in that case do I need to put a thermal pad on the ssd then the heatsink and then another thermal pad on top of the heatsink?

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  4 года назад +1

      My version of the Dell XPS 15 came with just the thermal pad for the SSD. My guess is the thermal pad, which came into contact with the bottom shell of the case, was enough to dissipate the heat. When I run Samsung SSD software it reports the temperature. It always seems low to me. Of course the new XPS might be different. You should definitely do some research this.

  • @JOHNSMITH-ve3rq

    how much can you actually tell the SSD speed difference in day to day usage? i'd have guessed the law of diminishing returns would very much apply here.

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  3 года назад

      I think for most day to day activities like working with office documents or web surfing won't show the differences, however part of my work is video editing and rendering of those videos. The before and after experience is very satisfying.

    Great video, Paul. I’m thinking about buying this laptop for our video editing needs. I’m very new to laptops and upgrades, so this might be a simple question, but is it necessary to change the thermal paste when upgrading the RAM and memory card? I read other comments and I see that there was a noticeable temperature difference experienced.

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  5 лет назад

      No. It's not required. In fact changing the thermal paste is probably the most risky parts of this procedure. You could accidentally put not enough paste on your CPU and GPU. You could also accidentally bend the thermal pipes when removing them. That said, my logic was that I don't want to be opening up my computer too often so why not repaste while I had it open. Hope that helps.
