The Gazzetta was the promoter and creator of the giro d'Italia, and at the time was the only way for people to know how the giro and their home champions were going, so the gazzetta basically created the giro, that on the other hand, made the gazzetta way more popular. The obvious consequence was to give to the champion a Maglia that is the color of the journal/sponsor. It's impressive how here in Italy very few people really care about cycling even if it helped making the country how it is nowadays, but it's even more impressive how the same people come down to streets and really cheer racers when they pass on they hometown and support so much italian riders. This is the beauty of sport.
