the water thing is legit! A full freezer stays colder using less energy and when/if you lose power it will keep everything frozen longer. The water bottles are just to keep the freezer FULL. ;)
Thanks wanted to write the same 🙏 Additionally it's also about opening and closing the fridge/ freezer For those who are into science: it's about the rate at what an object (water bottle vs same volume of air) can release the cold. Air heats up faster than water.
Too true. The idea is that water is better able to hold the temp than air so once it hits the temp you're shooting for it will hold that temp whereas air/empty space will cause your freezer to work harder, cycling on & off to maintain the set temp. A fridge will work the same way. So the goal is to keep it full of something to save power. Of course once you need the space for actual food, just remove the jugs as needed. Also you'll always have some extra water in an emergency.
I'm in Florida and my freezer is outside. I wrapped the freezer in 2" Styrofoam with the silver stuff on the outside, silver tape all corners. My freezer no longer frosts up. It also uses a lot less electric.
Ashley, I've seen people use grocery store reusable shopping bags to store items in their freezer. I do plan on trying it once I get my freezer cleaned. Oh, and I too have jugs of water in my freezer. :D
I’ve been to Cal Earth, so cool! Also, who else thinks Jonathan has found his Australian twin counterpart? Them two in the hardware store 😂 I’m wondering what this little building will be, a milking station? An outhouse? A feed storage? So exciting!! ❤🎉
Welcome😊, Hayden!👋 I'm looking forward to watching this happen!🎉 Thanks for taking us along to view the California and Mohave campuses. ♻️WOW😄!! I COULD WANDER AROUND THERE FOR DAYS!!😎😄 Ashley, I want to thank you for reminding me to clean my freezers! I need to do an inventory so that I can remember what I have in them! Thank you very much ❤🖖🐈⬛🫖📚🥧
The whole “I forgot this was in here!” Is the exact reason I have a front opening freezer even though I currently own a slightly larger chest freezer. XD
I recommend my friend's solution. She has a clipboard with a list of everything in the freezer right next to the freezer and a copy in her kitchen. Easy to cross off stuff or add stuff. I'll be cleaning my freezers today(thanks again, Ashley) and doing that myself!
I like my upright freezer too! I have a chest freezer mostly for the pig meat. We had two pigs we had to put away a couple years ago. Only a little bit is left. We'll be butchering our meat birds soon so they can go in there. I never like sorting around in there for stuff. The shelves in the upright freezer are so much easier to manage! I like the door storage too that I don't have with the chest freezer. I have an area to put my frozen butter in that the pounds of butter fit in perfectly and it has a closure over it too. It's easy to hang a thermometer in there to really be able to see the temperature it's keeping. The chest freezer was cheaper and I guess it's more energy efficient but not so much user friendly! Have a great week!
I have lots of water bottles in my freezer. But the smaller ones (500ml). It takes up less space, and I can move it to fit in any gap. So after my monthly shopping, I layer my frozen goods with a layer of frozen bottles inbetween. It helps keep everything cold, and reduces the time it takes for everything to freeze. Plus, if the power does go out, the food stays frozen for a lot longer. I've never had to test it till food started thawing. But I know that 2 days with no power made no difference to my frozen foods. Plus, if you really need to, you can put some of those frozen water bottles in your fridge to help it stay cold inside.
You have the patience of a saint Jonathan, answering these questions….often over and over….and explaining every decision you and Ashley make. Good luck with the new build. I’m sure it will be great fun to learn another building technique, and get a guest room for family and friends in the process. I’m looking forward to seeing the end result and the journey to get there!
Circular is internal to the structural integrity and strength of the bags. It also allows you to save a ton of money not building a traditional roof if you dome it.
@@TinyShinyHome very clever. I would have one with small pipes through the walls which are connected to bed hives inside, a bee house. Will this be a dog dome for Cloud to use?
I keep water bottles in the freezer in the summer to help it keep up, also they're great for cooling myself down when I get to hot. I've been hospitalized twice for heat stroke, and I'm just going to stay prepared to cool myself off.
bonjour la famille et bienvenu Hayden. Ashley thanks for the orange skies and aolians along the Interstate 10 between Palm Springs and Redlands. that was home for me. Mr. Hayden's center mount is pure genius. He lives a continent away but brings to the fore another way to work and get the get the job done right. lots of planning, working children and please say good-bye to the piggies going to 'Freezer Camp !'
guys go sign up that workshop. I attended Hayden's workshop when almost 10 years ago. It was a life changing decision of meeting lightminded folks and working on a project with your hands. And my life was never be the same since!!!
Ashley, I too have frozen water in my freezer, its to help keep your freezer cold for awhile if the power goes out, at least for here anyway, lol, it helps!
The water bottles make the freezer more efficient by displacing the air with a solid thermal mass. We do it in our freezer to remove as much air as possible.
🦋 That’s a big chest freezer maybe you should keep a little book of what’s in it and just cross it off as you use it and add new things that you put them in. I don’t know how else anyone could keep track of what’s in a deep freeze like that. You did a great job cleaning that freezer and organizing it. You’re such a hard worker. 💕
🦋 Oh, thank you for sharing this. This is amazing to see all those different shapes of buildings and structures. That must’ve been so wonderful to see that in person you’re the best. Always bringing something new to my life and I love that.
IT’S SO GOOD TO SEE YOU GUYS!!!! 🥳 🎉Woohoo!!! I’ll take some of that apple butter!!! That is truly a beautiful trench!! Can’t wait to see this dome completed and see what y’all are going to use it for! Love you guys!
Ashleigh, You know that you can can your Apple Butter, peaches, chicken & pork, and even SALSA, right? For low acid foods, specifically meats + plus some other foods, youll need a pressure canner. But you already have such a great outdoor kitchen setup, it would be easy and youd end up with shelf stable foods, ready to go, freeing up precious freezer space. Too bad im not in the area, id love to show you how. BTW some people get crazy and can everything. Been there, done that 😮 I now find to be truly happy food wise a good mix of canned, frozen and fresh is the way to go. Just a thought. Nice job with the freezer. Also remember that the water jugs are a place holder. Meaning that you dont need to feel compelled to make room for them in a crowded freezer.
Ashley, as others have mentioned, yes to the water jugs, whatever size. In addition to helping with efficiency, if power goes out for any reason, food stays frozen longer! Mesh laundry bags work great for hauling food in/out chest deep freezers. They come in all kinds of sizes so get the bigger, heavy duty type for gym wear/sports stuff. i am one of 18 siblings, with Kansas farmer parents. We grew up pressure canning or dehydrating everything. My mom canned in half galloon jars, by adding 20% more time to the USDA quart jar times. 4 half gallon wide mouth jars fit in the 23 qt Presto canner. (Not USDA approved). I realize that canning & storing glass jars, full or empty is not something you can tackle now! It takes a lot of space. But a tidbit to tuck away in the memory for future possibilities. As to the canned jars surviving in your Arizona heat, I had to keep mine if an uninsulated, no air conditioning garage, in the Palm Springs, CA area (for 23 years). Temps in the garage would soar to over 130* F for months on end. None of the food went bad or jars came unsealed. The quality would deteriorate some. And I suppose some of the nutrients would dissapate. No matter, it was prepared food, ready to eat, not dependent upon power supply.
I love this video and all of the ones you've posted along the way. Something just occurred to me. Could you create a sort of B&B out of earthen houses on the property? Maybe some standalone buildings that could become an extra source of income for you. Or, even build them for volunteers who help on the homestead or with new building projects? Or, just homes for the kids as they become older? Instead of a homestead, you might have the beginnings of a community.
Roadtrip! Cool, driving to California to pick-up Hayden from Cal-earth. Wow, those structures are amazing! Those domes are so amazing looking! The Mojave Center is amazing too! I'm glad you got to stay the night. Cleaning out the freezer. I always forget what I have in the freezer! I'm glad you found the two hams! Cute trip to the supply stores. I like the window. It was funny when Hayden sat in the mini Jeep! Where is the barbed wire? I like the flue piece for filling up the superadobe earth bags. I love the schedule you made Ashley! Samish is a cat's name? Food ideas on the purple post-it notes! I like the caster wheel system for the compass! I like the concrete shield he put around the compass too. That dome looks really small but I bet you can finish it in the workshop time you have so that's what matters. Nice trench digging! I'm so glad you have Hayden's expertise! Trenches down a foot for the shallow side. Got it. Only 5" deep bags? Then 2" for gravel down first. That is a beautiful trench Jonathan! I love the slide in and the Hayden pop up! If there is empty space in the top of your freezer, that is the space to fill will water jugs. The concept is based on water holds cold well and air does not.
Always fun to clear out your freezer after a year...with a family of six. I love the empty ice cream box....someone didn't want to admit they took the lasy one! My wife's expression when she comes across empty: pig!!😊
I once worked at a place where hours were long and overtime was common. One of my coworkers brought in a stack of 5 packaged frozen meals to store in the freezer section of our break room refrigerator, so that she could have a hot meal on these longer, overtime days. One evening, Ashley opens the freezer, anticipating a quick meal, and one-by-one, she discovers each of the boxes have been carefully opened, emptied, and returned to the freezer! We were a pretty small crew, so who could have done this? Through a process of elimination, we figured out the culprit was John. His excuse? “Well, she’s such a bitty little gal, and I figured she would understand that a big, strapping guy like me NEEDS to eat.” Really…SMH. Ashley’s husband abandoned the family, and she was struggling to raise 2 kids on her own. She lived frugally, paid her own way, and sacrificed everything for her kids. She didn’t need to be feeding this “strapping guy” a second meal because he was hungry after finishing his first dinner. The rest of us made sure she ate that night. We all chipped in, and bought 10 replacement dinners, storing them in a box in the freezer, labeled ‘Ashley’s Meals’. The guys told John that if he touched one of her meals, he’d have his fingers broken - one by one.
You only need the water bottles in the freezer when there isn't much in it. When your freezer is that full the mass of the items help keep the temperature low. Think of it this way. In the winter it often gets colder the closer you come to a large snow pile.
I live in a 384 sq/ft tiny house so my freezer is on my covered porch... mine looks like yours inside. I need to get mine ready for deer season in a couple weeks.
Really enjoyed this! Sorry I can't be there, but the videos are the next best thing! I'm always excited to see a new video come up! After a full month of daily videos I got spoiled!🤣 Love what you all are doing!❤
❤Aloha. Thank you for visitinig this place. I have been watching them off and on when I was looking for earth bag homes. Great information. Aloha.❤ Aww. I thought your were going to visit mike reynolds place. Earthships. Maybe another trip in the future.
This dome seems so small what ever will it be used for? Not for a bedroom, as a bed wouldn't fit in it. But then on camera it may seem smaller than it really is. But it does look as if it's going to be a great time of learning and fun for whoever will be part of it. It's so nice that you choose to share your experience in a hands on way. Have a great week!
I asked the same thing was wondering if it was a awesome dog house for your fur baby's can't wait to see it I'm in new Zealand and they won't let us do this......we are prone to quakes but I reckon it would withstand a medium shake, you guys inspire so many......I get excited when notification rings cheers xxx
I hope your rental car held up better than mine did. Had a dog run into the side of my car a couple of weeks ago, so i had to get "a" rental car, which turned into 3 different ones in 5 days, due to maintenance issues. I still have the 3rd one, but its a clunker. And the bottles of water in the freezer..... my daughter does that. She says the freezer does not have to work as hard to cool it if there is not a lot of food in there, AND if the power goes off it helps foods stay colder longer because the bottles are solid blocks of ice and will thaw more slowly than a lot of the foods that may ot have as much mass.
The water in the freezer is because your freezer is more efficient when filled, so it is just to fill the space. So as you fill it with food, take out water.
the jugs of water int he freezer - you wondered "do people do that"- yes, they do that. the point is to add thermal mass. Imagine if the freezer was empty (air only) if you open it, the air exchanges, and there's no mass in there to act like a battery so the temp spikes when you open it. Now imagine it full of ice. If you open and close it, not much will change temp wise. So the point of the water jugs is to take up space - to add mass. If you have lots of food in there, it will do it too. The point is to fill it up. Just think about it like charging a "cold battery" so that it's more efficient when you open/close it.
Ashley, don't forget to get more baskets for the freezer. Resist the urge to name one the Patrick memorial freezer basket. Aloysius would be a better name.
I wish I was close enough to grab some apple butter!!! So excited to see the workshop. Will the dome be big enough to use as a spare guest room? Good luck with the build and the workshop!!
Instead of the post and caster wheel, use a metal post. Pound that in plumb and use a metal ring that fits loosely on the post. With the post you can have it up 4-5' out of the ground so you can check the roundness of higher layers by sliding the ring up the post.
Well..Hayden's been running workshops for 10 years and apprenticed with Cal-Earth. We're going to go with his recommendation for a compass. Also this is one of two compasses for getting the dome geometry correct.
I use boxes to organize in my freezer…then I can pick them up to look underneath. And yes to the water jugs to keep your freezer full…more economical $👍🏻
Oh, gosh, I want to come to the workshop so bad, but I can't. This is so exciting! I hope you have video to share at the end for those of us who just cannot make the trip. I'm pretty sure I've seen videos of the
It will be interesting to see what the dome becomes. What will be its purpose? 🤗 Every project is an inspiration and education. The three of ya'll jumping up together was so fun. I live too far away. I absolutely would attend.
It's so great to hear an Aussie accent on your homestead - I just wish it were mine! That dome really *is* tiny. I thought it was going to be a guest room - will a bed fit in there?
All those circular structures at Cal-Earth reminded me of the Tholos tomb (“Tomb of Agamemnon”) I visited in Greece. Had hear about it for years and was so overwhelming to see the construction of it. And the mini bee hives are wonderful. I wish I could attend. How do those structures hold up in rainy, humid climates? Like the PNW?
I use a up right freezers only. With the freezer shelves it makes it so much easier to organize so you can keep track of what you have in the freezer. When it comes time to defrost the freezer we remove the food on a warm day and put a huge fan in front of the freezer with the door open and the air flow melts the ice and frost build up rapidly. Since it is a up right we don't have to bail the water out. We and our family and some close friends live in Casa Grande, AZ. We raise Goats, Chickens, Ducks and a few Turkeys, Pigs and a Steer. When we harvest some of animals a lot of the meat we will pressure can a lot of it. We have 8 raised bed 4'X8" gardens and am starting to do hydroponic gardening for year around fresh veggies.
❤ WoW....this is a great video ....WelCome...Hayden this should be good...Thank U for sharing this us...❤ and yes we do put frozen water jugs in our freezers ....especially here in Florida hurricanes will knock the power out...keeps things frozen...
I’m curious, almost all of the superadobe buildings shown on your road trip were small single-room (or conjoined single-room) huts. Is that due to the inherent characteristics of the superadobe process, the fact that the builders chose not to incorporate a different technology for their roof structures (like you did with the solar shed), or both?
RUclips deleted my comment, or a moderator did, but I had similar questions so I fired off an email to CalEarth and had a very pleasant and fruitful exchange with a person named Donner who answered my questions about odd things. Like putting a sprayed concrete dome on top of earth bags among other things.
A big selling point of superadobe domes is that it allows people with limited income and resources to build a fully functioning building without needing to create a traditional expensive roof. That being said, at Cal-Earth there are several vault buildings with straight walls and poured concrete arched roofs. Lots of ways to do it, but they are definitely focused more on fast, affordable housing for the disadvantaged and a circular dome is super strong and cheap.
love the drone shots of the Mojave Center .and video tour of the Cal Earth Institute . .if you get a chance, the barstow museum is pretty cool (joined there in 2000) as is the California Desert Information Center. (that houses the 2nd largest meteor in the us (the old woman) its a little over 3 tons. seeing and touching something that actually flew through space is amazing high five to the Homies and Hayden of course . funny my mom lives in apache jct az in the sonoran desert and my dad lives in the Mojave desert in yermo and newberry springs Ca.

This so very exciting!! Hoping to see some videos on the workshop for the superadobe dome! WooHoo!!
If you have cloth shopping bags you can use them to organize the freezer.
What a great trip and what an experience
You only need the water bottles in the freezer when there isn't much in it. When your freezer is that full the mass of the items help keep the temperature low. Think of it this way. In the winter it often gets colder the closer you come to a large snow pile.
I am SO glad I came to the workshop. 🎉
Thanks guys!
Today's is gonna ROCK!
Cheerleading from over here!!
With you all in spirit!
@paulas_lens Did they say if there a reason they went with such a small diameter on the build? What is it going to be?
What's up with the Superadobe Workshop? #earthbag #superadobe

Good morning you guys hope you guys have a wonderful day and keep up the good work you guys one step at a time
I m so happy that everything is falling into place. It’s going to be a great workshop 😀
Can’t wait to see the guest room grow. Very exciting. 🇳🇿
It’s only 1’ smaller than the circle in the shed. Bed will fit fine
Please come back!!! I miss your happy faces! I can’t wait to see you again! Praying for you are all well and having fun! Love you guys!
Super COOL…can’t wait!!!
You’re rocking this workshop already! Also, when i make lists, i absolutely write the stuff I’ve already done and then cross it off ✅ 😂😂😂
I laughed when I saw the box of frozen pizza! 🍕🤣😍
And the internet grabbed my comment. I think I've seen videos of where you spent the night. So cool. So good to see everyone.
Hi Hayden! So glad you made it 😂
I'm excited to see this fun new project, with the help of all your workshop attendees and your super talented Aussie 😊
So excited for you guys
I use boxes to organize in my freezer…then I can pick them up to look underneath. And yes to the water jugs to keep your freezer full…more economical $👍🏻
Oh, gosh, I want to come to the workshop so bad, but I can't. This is so exciting! I hope you have video to share at the end for those of us who just cannot make the trip. I'm pretty sure I've seen videos of the
G'day Hayden glad you made it, 16+ hrs is no joke. I hope you brought some Vegemite for them to try ? 🤣👍🇺🇸🇦🇺
Barely ;)
I was thinking same thing about a bed. You could have a round bed in there.
Hey Hayden, super cool have a ladt y'all ✌👍💖
Hell yeah Hayden!!!1
A break from work is well needed I need a break from my grand kids kidding they are my energy pill have a bless and safe trip.
All depends on the plaster :)
When you said road trip, I knew you were headed to CalEarth!
Hmm! Small dome! Small freezer. There you go Ashley!
That is so amazing
So glad you bought a new tamper!
I'm excited for y'all, this will be awesome.
Welcome to my home state!
A lot of time for such a small dome,it looks so small
Hope your week is great 😃
It's not that small. 9' diameter inside, will be at least 9'-10' tall.
@@TinyShinyHome it will be fantastic I know that, love you guys
loved the outdoor seating areas done in the bags etc
I put jugs of water in the freezer because we have outages. It helps.
It would help if you got an electric jackhammer for trenching. Home Depot - Lowes - Harbor Freight - Amazon all have them.
@@TinyShinyHome Thanks for the clarification!
❤️👍👍👍
Great project.
The Australian accent! ❤
❤
love the drone shots of the Mojave Center .and video tour of the Cal Earth Institute . .if you get a chance, the barstow museum is pretty cool (joined there in 2000) as is the California Desert Information Center.
