  • Welcome to This Broad's Life, a new Jezebel video series in which Hillary Crosley Coker trails interesting and kick-ass women as they navigate this thing called life.
First up is Janet Mock, author of Redefining Realness, host of MSNBC's So Popular!, trans activist, and a Hawaiian crazy enough to leave all that warmth behind for east coast winters. Mock kindly let our Jezebel team hang out with her on the coldest day in New York's history since the 1800s. It was nothing less than historic. Enjoy!

This is an awe-inspiring segment. Janet, is beautiful and has a commanding poise about her. I respect and applaud the candor she speaks about transgender yet it's really not a main focus. It a period to many other captivating things about her and her life.
      Great piece.

Michelle B. agreed! In addition to being an important voice for women, WOC and trans women, I also love the actual sound of her voice. It's so soothing but still authoritative. It's a perfect balance

In attempting to disclose her philosophies re TranS, Janet makes several confusing and contradictory statements......
“Not for me to say how other people experience their 'own transness'. Yet writes and speaks of her experience and how she feels she can 'redefine' public perception of TranS.
“I'm not the source for your education. (I believe she meant to say 'entertainment', because, lets face it, the layperson's view of TranS is pure entertainment.)

I actually I believe the title of the segment was redefining realness, not defining what it is to be transgender. So much for "layperson understanding".

This is silly. Trans is not a transitionary thing? Okay?
