You should have measured the backside of that sheeting behind the black and behind the Puter to see what the temperature was behind each color.
The real question is what would the temp be in the attic.
That is a great question. This is just a surface test. I’d love to have some kind of attic test where I could control the variables.
@@roofingtips Cool! Can’t wait to see if you do. It’ll be interesting because I have a dark roof now and I was always under the assumption the darker the color. The more heated the attic would be inside.

I’m a roofer in Oklahoma.
There’s zero difference in attic temperature from a white roof to a black roof.
The owner of a the white roof just has extremely bad taste. *That’s the difference*
I've done test on this with roofs and attics and the color really as no different on single ply roofs. But when you have multiple layers what happens is it take alot longer for the roof and attic to cool after the sun goes down. 25+ year's experience in East Bay Area California.

It’s mostly alol about ventilation.
If you want to mitigate attic temperature further putting down a radiant barrier under the synthetic felt application would be the first step followed by spray foam.
But what do we know? Let them have an ugly white roof.

I have measured black shingles (CT Moire Black) at 199 when 100 degrees temp. Houston tx.

Five to 6 degree difference doesn't seem like much, but it really is. The difference between white cement tile roof and a terracotta colored roof is about 15 degrees! Again, it doesn't seem like mutch, but it is.
It may seem like a small temperature difference if it's 5 or 15° but you got to realize that that is a consistent temperature difference throughout the day it compounds and adds to quite a bit of extra heat in the home

Parents went to black on a single story house and what a mistake! Had to add more roof vents and insulation in attic! Neighbors next door did the same and was just like a parking lot added next door outside my bedroom window!!!
Like I said in the video, any roof needs to have good ventilation, otherwise it’ll cook!
What about an even lighter colored shingle? Like light brown color? Should be even cooler right?
Slightly, but it doesn’t make enough of a difference to really justify picking a color simply for the cooler temps. The moral of this video is pick the color you like and make sure you have good ventilation.

Try a white shingle. Try wearing a black t-shirt in the sun and then try a white t-shirt. Hugh difference. I just had a white shingled roof installed compared to a dark brown shingle and what a difference. Much cooler in the house.
Im curious to know if adding spray foam insulation to the back of one of the roof material colors would actually increases the heat of the shingles.
I would have preferred you to have used more contrasting colors a much light color than the pewter. I used to have charcoal colored shingles and but switched to a sand color and it seems to me cooler by electric bill.
I wanted to use a very popular color. Sand is a pinnacle Sun color, so it’s designed to be cooler by around 20%.
My goal was to use two shingles from the same class or model and compare them.
Pretty good experiment. Comparing a light gray shingle with a black shingle would be interesting to see the diff

the white would be about 32 degrees cooler...I tested it in Florida at 1 pm 81 degrees dark brown shingle 150 ,, shingle right beside it with one coat of white paint was 118 degrees

What is the temperature in the attic?

@@roofingtips a surface test is irrelevant. A test in the upstairs of a home or attic would be a more realistic test as well as AC usage due to a darker roof and electricity usage difference.
The attic space is in direct correlation with the surface temperature of the roof.
This is like a card game with my brothers kids, everyone just talking about stuff they have no idea about

Id love to get some white shingles and re-test. Atlas used to make a color called Oyster that would be great for this, but I think its discontinued

i have the same shingles in dark brown....i just painted them white...i took a temp reading...in full sun at 81 degrees the brown shingle was 150 degrees... right beside that reading i had painted one coat of white roof coating, by Lanco the painted shingle was 118 degrees, 32 degree difference with just one coat of paint... big difference in heat transfer to the living areas. I spent $620 for a 1500 sq ft house 40 gal total for 2 coats of paint citrus county Florida, house is in full sun all day...I should have painted the roof years ago, I didnt know it would make such a difference
That’s wild! I have heard of roof paint, but never actually seen it done. Is it designed for shingles specifically?
LOL. The backside of the shingles is what should be measured. You only measured heat reflectivity. Also, that temperature gun you're using has to be calibrated for the surface you are measuring.

If you have ridge vent and soffit intake at the correct ratio, there's no need for any other kind of ventilation. In fact, if you add any static vents in addition to ridge vent it will work against the Venturi effect. This would apply to powered vents or solar vents when they're not running. One type (static, solar, powered, whirly bird etc.) or the other (ridge vent) but not both 👍
But ridge vent is SO ugly.
Nothing beats good rear facing box vents for aesthetics and performance
@@h2w25 What do you mean "rear facing"? (do you mean a gable end?) To each is own.... they do a pretty good job hiding the ridge vent (with shingles in some cases). I guess some would think off ridge / static vents are ugly as well. However, depends on where you live. Here in Florida, we want the LEAST wind resistance (to prevent hurricane damage and water intrusion) and good static air flow. The ridge on a hip roof wins in those areas. On the old fashion "gable" roofs (still common in old FL homes) box vents and even powered gable fans can be a good thing when done right. However, hip roof with soffit / ridge should never have a powered fan yet many unsuspecting home owners here buy them everyday.
But I replace a roof, and make sure the ventilation system is on the backside of the house so that you don’t see it from the street

White shingles used to be readily available. There aren’t nearly as many white shingles out anymore. However, white shingles have always been regarded as cool colors

Good video Brent I was thinking more like 15+ difference. We get this question a lot also, and we suggest that it’s generally not worth sacrificing picking the color based on temperature because after we get the ventilation working correctly . Its going to be so much cooler in the house than before. Afterwards homeowners are amazed how much less their a/c is running then before the new roof. 💰💵💸 in their pocket

I don’t see the point of this… Why pick a dark gray shingle that’s nearly black? Either compare to the lightest color shingle out there or paint one side with white oil based primer and see how much cooler that is. It makes a big difference externally as well as inside the attic.

@@roofingtips I’m a “net zero” certified builder. We insulate well.. attics are balanced ventilation systems or un-vented assemblies.
There isn’t s noticeable difference in temperature in the home. Mid winter snows seem to melt very slow so this home seems to be pretty well sealed

LOL, hello that is what affects the attic temperature.
Your video needs to be taken down and re-done. Please consider the following:
#1: 5 degrees may seem small and may not be a big deal to those watching You Tube. However, set your thermostat 5 degrees higher tonight before you go to sleep. I bet you will wake up in sweat and make the family unhappy. There is a big difference in 88 vs 93 degree summer temps here in Florida. That difference in the roof also translates though the sheeting to the attic and through the insulation reducing the benefits of said insulation / R factor. now your AC has to work harder to keep the living space at the same temp and it takes longer at night for the roof and all layers underneath through to living space to cool. Look up how much energy is saved for each "degree" one raises their thermostat... I run hot (hot sleeper) so keep my air at 73 and pay a larger power bill for that desired temp. If I raise my thermostat by just 4 degrees, our power draw in the summer goes down to what would equal approx. $100 off our power bill each month (running at 77 vs 73). So yea....a few degrees makes a big difference in the real world and may matter to people. (You should not spin it so it is not a big deal)
#2 There are MULTIPLE engineering studies and it is common knowledge today (within the building community) that solar fans or any attic fan in a properly ventilated attic (soffit and ridge) is a big negative for two reasons A: You interrupt and block the static air flow path between the powered vent and the section above to the top (at the ridge) along with with the surrounding area. You also cut off the vacuum / venturi effect between soffit to ridge that will leave hot air pockets in many places throughout the attic space. This will result in both hotter (sections) of the attic and potential damage to the sheeting for improper air flow, moisture build up, and other issues. B: By adding the additional pressure to the static airflow of a soffit / ridge vented attic, you will pull cool air from the living space no matter what as no house is perfectly sealed (it cannot be or your would have mold) as it needs to breath. Insulation does a good job keeping the cool air in the living space and hot air in the attic separate based on the engineering and static air flows from a soffit / ridge system. However, if you add pressure (or air getting sucked up form a powered fan) you are going to also pull cool air into the attic space resulting in the AC working harder to keep it cool.
No doubt the ignorant homeowner (and roofer who does not know what the heck they are doing) will "feel" that the attic is cooler with a powered fan (solar or otherwise) giving you a false sense it is a good thing. That is based on the area "below" the fan (often the attic access which is a small section) and is often partially due to the cool air from the living space getting sucked up. My dad was a pro builder in the 1980's and use to argue with people about this. Today (here in Florida) most every GC and professional in the biz will fully back what I am saying since it is now taught and in the books. This knowledge was not in the books in the 1980's but it is today. Every building engineer, architect, licensed AC pro, and GC's who were licensed in the last decade or so would all agree. Please stop using your Opinion based on assumptions that have no basis to sell an idea to those less informed. I like the look of black shingles, however, there are serious negatives you tried to cover up and dismiss.... I believe due to ignorance not due to intentionally trying to mislead people.
You can’t use ridge venting along with powered fans. We install both, but never on the same home.
