      "Listen to All, Follow None." Always critical think...that's not taught in america...in fact it is discouraged by design. We should expose children to the trivium: "The Trivium is a systematic method of critical thinking used to derive factual certainty from information perceived with the traditional five senses: sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. In the medieval university, the trivium was the lower division of the seven liberal arts, and comprised grammar, logic, and rhetoric (input, process, and output)."[1]

      Push, legs,pull, rest, push,legs,pull..
      First round of push legs and pulls concentrated in strength. So basically compounds with low reps and more weight..
      Second round of push legs pull go for more volume and sets with lower reps for hypertrophy 💪🏾

    I'm 59 and always fall back to 3 basic foundations: 1.) my H.S. defensive back field drills (sprints, back pedaling and stop/start change of direction), 2.) My Recon Marine workouts (Distance runs, hill sprints, pushups, pull ups sit ups, leg lifts, mountain climbers, bends & thrusts, and rope climbs), 3.) Olympic "style" lifts (Deadlifts, squats, cleans, clean and jerks).

    Good advice. If i were to add to it, I would say forget about programs. Learn from the ground up by yourself by listening to your body as you try new things out.
    Sometimes getting in the gym Mon-Fri is all people need to change their lives. Don't complicate things with supplements and programs if your just starting out, you can always add those later.

    Whats crazy about Elliot is how he takes what most of us know already but are caught up in our sport of bodybuilding and powerflifting (strength development) so much that we get distracted from the simple techniques and practices that are proven to work and never stopped working and makes us reavaluate them in a more open minded viewpoint and better realization.
    Awesome stuff Elliot thank you !

    I was in the same boat, always looking for the best program always changing stuff. I've been doing StrongLifts 5x5 for a month now with some accessory exercises at the end and I'm gonna stick to this for a year before I move onto a hypertrophy program.

    • @imRenzae
      @imRenzae 9 лет назад

      Yeah, except I modified it a little bit. For the 3rd set of every exercise I try to grind out as many reps as I can before failure. For example I might get 8 reps or maybe I'll barely get 6. Then I drop the weight and do a few sets of high reps, making sure to focus on explosiveness.
      Workout A:
      Squat 3x5
      Bench 3x5
      Row 3x5
      Weighted Dips 3x5
      Facepulls
      Workout B:
      Deadlift 1x5
      Overhead Press 3x5
      Weighted Chin Ups 3x5
      Lateral Raises

      +Pietro Aretino Been doing strength training for a year but had to stop for 8 months, had "decent" numbers (275 Squat, 225 Bench, 331 Deads). Now I'm back on it but man I lost all kinds of strength. So decided to go back to basics with StrongLifts 5x5 so I can help you bro. Mehdi advise to start with the bar only but seriously that's useless, you should definitely start with 60% of your 1RM then increase each workout.
      Basically you cannot increase your numbers without stalling : you will stall. Then decrease a lil bit and go up again as usual. I think you should try to go up until you lift that 900lbs even if you're not interested in 900lbs that would definitely motivate you bro. Strength is life.
      My goal is to go back to my ancient numbers then I'll go on Smolov Squat and Bench routine to blow up those numbers, and go back to 5x5SL again. Keep it up my friend.

    Great advice. I made the mistake of splitting my intensity/focus between high intensity training and heavy lifting. What happened? I burnt out eventually. So now I do 20 miles p/wk of brisk fasted AM walking, and put all my intensity into heavy full body lifting 3x p/wk. No sprints, no battle ropes, no sled, etc.. Just morning walking, and heavy lifting. Gotta admit, not only am I way stronger (recently hit 225 on OHP). But I feel 10x better.

  • @NZT42

    Wisdom. Look at Richard Simmons. He helped people because he made them enthusiastic about moving and he kept their attention on it. Any routine that will get your body moving will benefit you. I have very little time to work out and the best description of much of my work out is flailing. I hold weights in my hands and I try to move my arms and my body in every position I can. Then I do repetitive yoga poses in rapid repetition. I'm not looking for flexibility or strength as a goal, I just want to be able to walk upright with good posture until I die. It seems like its working. No matter what you decide to do with your body it will be better than no choice at all.

      in general, we use a lot of unnecessary words in the English language just as forms of personal expression. many of us feel completely comfortable using expletives for this purpose. it doesn't show a lack of intelligence just because someone cusses, often quite the opposite actually because many intelligent people realize the inanity but effectiveness of their use. the "f bomb" expresses a certain intensity that no other word can, the fact that you responded like you did exemplifies this. granted, some people over use them but really, they're just words, their offensiveness is subjective.

    • @ahbalone
      @ahbalone 10 лет назад

      Aaron Morgan Who is offended? Certainly not me. So you can cut the flowery, patronizing bs about swearing. My point is it seems out of place for the "Yoda" of strengthcamp. I think he's got a lot of potential. A good, deep thinker and physically gifted, Hulse could make many millions in several ways. But, I doubt he would give a lecture to a group of NFL trainers and talk that way, because it doesn't really add anything to his respectable expertise. Mixing his facts and f bombs just shows he's still got some "street" in him. We'll see how he sounds in ten years.

    • @garconrouge9099
      @garconrouge9099 10 лет назад +5

      ahbalone That wasn't intended to be patronizing. Your original post made you come across as a little offended. I'm sure if he were to gain interest from some professional entity like the NFL then he would address them as they saw fit, but this is his own personal youtube channel........either way, since when is the NFL exactly censored in the language they use amongst one another?

      Anthony Reynoso start with few reps of basic push-ups and squats, then that very movement of exercise which u will do but with lower weights. Do 40% of 1 rep max, 50% of 1 rep max, 60% of 1 rep max. for sets 1,2,3 respectively.
      This is one of the best warm up routines for heavy lifting.

    At the end Elliott was telling you Mike Chang haters to shut up. He said just cause someone is in the spotlight and has high marketing doesn't mean it's wrong. Mike Chang's workouts are great because I did them without bias. Stop hating. All you're really doing is following a trend. Mike Chang gets hated on everywhere and somewhere a long the lines you decided to jump on that train.

    I'm using this. I'm already finally able to actually enjoy dressing nice again. Thanks to all the weight I've lost past few months and the last few weeks of working out ALL of my nicer clothes actually fit me again. I'm not that super serious when it comes to clothes, but I do like to at least wear something decent looking.

    it's better to switch programs after some weeks, your muscles will get used to the exercises and practically fall asleep. wake em up again with a different program, a different approach. and you will grow much faster. (if you eat right, that is)

      Chaps0n Let's say I am working out 3x/week, I hit one muscle group 1 time per week, if you say that I should change my program in few weeks, than what does it mean.. when I do 1x(lets say 6 weeks) = 6 times certain exercise? in the first 30 exercises you just start seeing the result. I would probably say 6 months is the MINIMUM period for the program.

    • @AdamDBurnham
      @AdamDBurnham 10 лет назад +11

      well, I've been stuck for a year so now I switch programs every 10 weeks. 20 weeks far now. not just the exercises but also the sets and reps. I go 5 days a week, except for biceps/triceps i work out every muscle on a different day. and Im seeing result. maybe it's no good for everyone but it works for me so if you're struggling, why not give it a try

  • @mementomori4355

    I can’t believe I’m only just seeing this video. I literally did exactly what your outlined here, well almost. I’ll explain. I didn’t pick a program out of a selection of programs with my eyes closed. I basically wrote one down and broke it down as follows. I wanted to train twice per week, full body so that I could use the rest of the time free during the week for recovery, prepping and eating properly, as well as pursuing other pastimes I wanted to spend time on and develop. The program initially looked like this:
    Monday -
    Press: 3 X 6-12
    Back Squat: warm up and 1 all out set of 20 reps. Once I could no longer add 5lbs every squat session I went to 3-5 X 3-5 reps.
    Bench: 3 X 6-12
    Row: 3 X 6-10
    RDL: 2-3 X 10-15
    Thursday -
    Deadlift: 5 X 2
    Weighted Dips: 3 X 6-10
    D/B press: 3 X 6-10
    Weighted chins: 3 X 6-10
    Face pull: 2 X 15
    That was it, that was all I did. The intention wasn’t to run it strictly for a year but to just take it seriously, not program hop and just be damn consistent. Guess what happened? I got stronger, I became more awesome and I got bigger. Go figure.

  • @DanLetts97
    @DanLetts97 8 лет назад +4

    I can't completely agree with this, because if you're over training you're over training. A lot of conventional bodybuilding routines have too much volume for a genetically typical drug-free lifter. The most important thing is that you're able to add a little bit of weight to the bar each time you train it. If you're adding a little bit of weight to the bar every time you train then what you're doing is working period!!! In order to get bigger you must get stronger. If you're getting stronger then what you're doing is working just stick to it over the long term and you'll end up looking good.
    But the fundamental truth remains: in order to get bigger you must get stronger. Slowly getting stronger and stronger should be your main focus in the gym.

    This is the best piece of advice you can find anywhere.. people are so caught up with trying to perfect everything from the beginning and cant make up their mind to commit to anything, so they end up doing a bit of everything and having no real consistency. This is the same for all things in life not just working out. Make a plan, keep it simple, have the discipline and patience to stick with it. Why make it harder than it has to be - Cant believe this channel only has just over 1mill subscribers.. should be triple figures!

      looks awesome. just be careful with 5x5 deadlifts once you get to about 1.5x bw weights many people find that to be too many sets and that it increases the risk of injury. there's a reason stronglifts and starting strength only have them as 1x5, they tax the central nervous system and the lower back. However, since you're not doing back squats before them, you might be able to handle 2 or even 3 work sets. Just make sure you ramp up with lots of warm-up sets.
