Hi love your video, i have a quick question. I have a fairly old sago palm and it has smaller palms growing off the side of it up high like a branch. Could I pick one of those off instead of the one’s growing near the base of it, and plant it?
I love how your sago plants are growing. We have two beautiful ones in our back yard and every year we get pulp's we remove them and repot them and give some away and the others I keep to beauty my landscape.
I am sooo impressed that your Sagos have done sooo fantastic. I was looking forward to an update after you filmed the video of getting the "free" Sago palms which was such an incredible score. But I wasn't sure .. and LOOK AT YOU!!!!! AMAZING!!!! Hubby is a landscape contractor and he too is impressed!! They are such slow growing but they sprouted quickly and PERFECTLY. Keep doing this.. you have a gift!!!
Boy you scored Big with all those Sago Palms! That size palm would be hugely expensive at the nursery. That encouraged me to take my sad looking one out of its pot and into the garden.

Or, he's removing them for the health of the main root and throwing them with all the other clippings. The older tall roots are the money, pups are almost free.

You must live in Florida or California where it doesn't get so cold. I live in Tennessee where we have to dig up tropicals in the fall and bring them in. Or just leave them in a pot. Yours are beautiful! Mine has had pups and now I know how to set them free! Thanks!
I live in Charlotte, NC and have three (3) Sagos planted in the ground. If the winter gets cold enough, the fronds on the Sagos can get damaged and turn brown. In spring, I will cut off all the brown fronds and the Sagos will flush new green fronds.

I will transplant this very week, see if the roots are ok, cut the bad ones, put soil with good drainage but I don't know if I should cut the yellow leaves off. Any advice? Thanks man
I've had segos for 32 years in my front yard and one is super big. They have a tendency to have brown tips probably because it's in pure Sun. I enjoyed the music that was in the background. Very cool looking forward to future education.
You don't have to plant the suckers just detached from the mother plant, you don't give the wound time to heal and the sucker can rot and not root. The suckers should be left for about 15 days in a cool and dry place, away from light and heat sources, so the wounds heal and the root callus is formed, from which the roots will start.
Appreciate the advice! As an update all the suckers are growing just fine thrown directly in dirt. They didn’t need time to heal over. I did leave some on the side of the garage that I forgot about and they sprouted too. So both methods seem to work.
whoops, I just planted the pups right away. Tomorrow I will dig them up, wash them off, and let them sit in a cool dry place for 2 weeks as you say. Thanks for the info : )

Great video, my neighbor last year had their trees brought down, my sego had been shaded......my sego looked dead, no growth, duh...its in total full sun all day and it gets hot here! I love sagos!!I put a post on my neighborhood Facebook page. Telling anyone that has some they want removed I’ll do it for free. I just want the tree. So far I’ve gotten 4 really good sized ones so far. They make the landscaping look so much better!! 👍

Hey Paul, I love your Sago propagating passion ❤ I have a lovely one that came with the house I just bought. I love her and I gotta move Her. She is over 5 feet tall. And is gonna be VERY heavy. I went to ask for suggestuons by The guy at the nursery, he said that it would be too heavy for me to move it without a crane. I told him I plan To drag it 15 feet on a tarp and my (male and stronger than I) friend would help me. Nursery owner guy, laughed and said my friend wouldn't be my friend once we were done (LOL) I AM still determined. I have a fairly green thumb. I have confidence I can keep it thriving. Plus I am blessed to live in Hawai'i. It is really difficult to kill plants here. If you have any tips, I would be most grateful 🙏

I was SOOOO impressed with what I saw you do with the Saga plants. They are simply beautiful. But I have a question... I have two saga plants in pots in my backyard garden that I have to take inside during the winter months to keep them from dying and bringing them back out in the spring. That is a lot, especially now that they have grown out and are really heavy to carry and sticks both me and my husband. I don't know what zone I'm in, but I live in GA. However, I would like to know if it is possible for me to just go ahead and plant them in the ground? If so, how do I protect them from dying during the winter months? Or better yet, how can I get them to grow back out in the spring?

Hi Paul, thanks for th video. They all look so great. I have a question regarding my Sago palm. It has 2 leaves and both tips are curled, they are all green and healthy but curled. I don't seem to find the problem anywhere on the internet. Maybe you might know the cause? 🤔
I have no clue, maybe they're still growing out? I'd leave them be. Sagos are pretty hardy and I've cut off dead/fully yellowed leaves and they're fine.
Thanks for sharing the difference between sun and shade . I have 5 in full sun and they do get yellowish . Mine are in a sandy environment I do water them often especially in summer and fertilize them. When is the best time to transplant the pups. By the way yours sagos look very nice..
I just planted mine in mid summer and they seem to be doing fine. Usually transplanting in late summer/fall or late winter/early spring is good. You just don’t want to stress the plant so around those times it’s not usually as dry and the roots can focus on growing. It depends on where you sre
We have a Sago palm that we planted almost 20 years ago from pup that someone had thrown away. (We have no idea how long it had been in the woods abandoned when we found it but it was about the size of a grapefruit.) It has survived all types of weather, including occasional nights of single digit temps here in upstate South Carolina. We thought that last winter was it's last due to several extra cold days, but she held her own. Strangely enough, this spring she has grown two heads (what I like to call pineapples) where the new fronds will grow. Is this normal?

My Sago from HD had these beautiful dark green leaves, new shoots have grown from the center, yet they are light green and curly. They have expanded to the point I can no longer see the original greener (deep) leaves. Do I need to trim them? Thanks!

Great video! How long after you trimmed up the roots and planted them did you see the new growth start? I have some that weren’t planted right so I dug them back up, trimmed up the roots and replanted them in the same spot with new soil. Just wanted to see how long before I might see some new growth if any. Appreciate your time and keep up the great work
It took 2-3 weeks I think. That’s when the fronds began to emerge and they grow out slowly. The bigger specimens leafed out faster than the smaller ones.
@@alvarezbjj Just wait, you’d be surprised. I think they went months without any fronds and that’s why my neighbors threw them out. I’d say leave them for at least a couple of months even if you don’t see anything happen immediately.
You never talked about fertilizer. I have a few majesty palms (aka throw away palms here in NJ) and I use Palmgain, it's really good, problem is I have to order it from Florida where it's made and takes forever to get here due to I guess demand. My son just came back from Bermuda today and he said he pulled off some palm tree seeds. When I saw them I had no idea what they heck they were but with a little research and him describing the plant, he said it was very prickly and hard to pull off the seeds without getting stabbed, we figured out they are sago palm seeds, but they're not palms they're cycads, which Palmgain also works for. I overwinter my palms indoors and they do OK considering they're indoors from October to April/May. I have the sago seeds in water right now, can't wait to germinate them.
I'm in zone 6a, so, I have to keep mine potted and overwinter it in my greenhouse. I doubt that mine will get as nice and big as those you have. I got mine at a big box store 2 years ago for about $10. Maybe over a LONG time, mine will get sorta big. Yours are really nice and after looking dead, I wonder if those neighbors who threw them out have noticed that you saved them. I had been shocked when mine had shed dead fronds or whatever they are called on a Sago, and grew up some nice new green ones. That background noise likely insects, makes me think that a rattlesnake is gonna get you, lol! Sago's are poisonous to dogs, btw. Just thought I'd mention that. You are lucky you live where you can grow plants like this in the ground outside. I have found a type of Live oak that will grow well for me and live through our winters here in zone 6a, BUT even the hardiest palm "Needle palm" needs protection here. Well, at least I have the greenhouse and I can grow them in pots 😊😊
Someone gave us one here at work. I get to take care of it. I don't know much about them. We have it inside in a very bright hallway (windows on both sides). It has some yellowing on the lower leaves. It was moved in cold weather, otherwise seems to be doing ok. Is it normal for it to have the orange hair around the crown? Ours is covered, it's very thick.

Once the pups are separated, do you bury them in dirt? Or just half? Then water them?

Yeah my dogs almost instinctively don't mess with poisonous plants but anything that's toxic doesn't go in the backyard whatsoever.

A couple of my pups broke in half during removal. Will both sides sprout roots and grow, or are those a total loss?😊

You never talked about fertilizer. I have a few majesty palms (aka throw away palms here in NJ) and I use Palmgain, it's really good, problem is I have to order it from Florida where it's made and takes forever to get here due to I guess demand. My son just came back from Bermuda today and he said he pulled off some palm tree seeds. When I saw them I had no idea what they heck they were but with a little research and him describing the plant, he said it was very prickly and hard to pull off the seeds without getting stabbed, we figured out they are sago palm seeds, but they're not palms they're cycads, which Palmgain also works for. I overwinter my palms indoors and they do OK considering they're indoors from October to April/May. I have the sago seeds in water right now, can't wait to germinate them.
I'm in zone 6a, so, I have to keep mine potted and overwinter it in my greenhouse. I doubt that mine will get as nice and big as those you have. I got mine at a big box store 2 years ago for about $10.
Maybe over a LONG time, mine will get sorta big. Yours are really nice and after looking dead, I wonder if those neighbors who threw them out have noticed that you saved them. I had been shocked when mine had shed dead fronds or whatever they are called on a Sago, and grew up some nice new green ones.
That background noise likely insects, makes me think that a rattlesnake is gonna get you, lol!
Sago's are poisonous to dogs, btw. Just thought I'd mention that.
You are lucky you live where you can grow plants like this in the ground outside.
I have found a type of Live oak that will grow well for me and live through our winters here in zone 6a, BUT even the hardiest palm "Needle palm" needs protection here.
Well, at least I have the greenhouse and I can grow them in pots 😊😊
Someone gave us one here at work. I get to take care of it. I don't know much about them. We have it inside in a very bright hallway (windows on both sides). It has some yellowing on the lower leaves. It was moved in cold weather, otherwise seems to be doing ok. Is it normal for it to have the orange hair around the crown? Ours is covered, it's very thick.
They grow in ground in zone 8a and 8b, the leaves die but it comes back in spring.
Just brought home 4 large saga palms that i was given..do i cut back all the green leaves before i transplant,,i was told this is time of year to tranplant
I’d say leave them as is. If the leaves yellow and die on their own cut them.

I removed 3 5ft Sagos from a property. Cut them back very harsh and put them in 25gallon buckets. Sold them for $279ea a couple months later
