it's been 11 years and I still remember this one scene. I didn't care too much for this story in high school but now I just randomly remmeber this one scene and I want to cry.
"Because I lie and sign myself to lies, because I am not worth the dust you have left to hang, I have given you my soul LEAVE ME MY NAME!" Such a powerful quote that touches all sorts of emotions you can feel the forgiveness, the passion, the hurt, the betrayal all just from his tone he felt empty and he could not give his name.
I sobbed so hard when I watched this 10 years ago in high school. Like, I literally BAWLED. I walked out the classroom in a trance after I watched this movie. This scene was phenomenally brilliant.
Daniel Day Lewis is amazingly powerful true, but Paul Scofield deserves credit for the amazing portrayal of the stone hearted and immovable object of Judge Danforth. Incredible scene by two giants.
Read this play in high school English. It was probably one of three or four things I actually fully read in all four years of high school rather than using Sparknotes, because Arthur Miller had my full attention from the moment we read the first scene in class. I remember being blown away reading this scene, because of the shock that Proctor was choosing the rope, but also because of how poignant and powerful the “my name” monologue is. It’s not long, especially for a monologue in a play, but it’s so heavy. And then we watched this movie in class after finishing the reading. I knew who Daniel Day-Lewis was but hadn’t seen any of his movies at that point. I was in awe watching his performance from start to finish, but this scene has stuck with me ever since I first saw it about 15 years ago. I didn’t fully appreciate just how good this scene was until I saw a brilliant actor recite the words on the page. I’ve watched the movie 3 or 4 times in the years since, but I’ve watched this scene 50+ times.
This scene has cut so deep into the core of myself, who I am and who I chose to be. When I went to Salem, MA and read his name out loud at the witch museum, tears filled my eyes.
I watched this in 8th grade, long before I knew a shit about acting and cinema. Regardless of that, I was blown away by ddl in this. 10 years later the same man hit my top 5 actors of all time (1). What a gift.
I remember studying this in A level college and I’d never ever taken acting seriously until this moment. The emotion I felt during this scene was indescribable and to this day, Daniel Day Lewis will be one of the finest actors I’ve ever seen

I read this part in my 4th grade class. I remember not knowing what he meant by “it is my name” until I got older, and now it hits different - especially since this is my favorite actor.
Agreed. I love the play. And I think Daniel was incredible throughout the entire movie. But it wasn’t a great film by any means and was definitely very slow at times. This scene though… pure brilliance. Visceral emotion.
This wasn’t the best movie ever made (don’t get me wrong, it was still a decent film overall), but this might be one of the best scenes/some of the greatest acting I ever watched.
"Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life!" such a powerful phrase that "modern audiences" won't appreciate, now that one's name can be just thrown and changed (e.g. dead name).
One night when I was very young I stayed up very late watching this film with my dad. This scene always stuck in my mind, it must be 15 years since then and I have still always remembered it.
Though the world may condemn you and dub you a demon, God always knows the truth. He sees all and he knows what is in a person’s heart. He is the one who shall never abandon or betray you even when the world has. And if you allow him to aid you, he will not let Satan have you. Even if the Lord’s other children declare you unworthy and unsaved, he will come for you. So in situations like these in which innocents have their lives taken by those manipulated by the devil, look to God. For Satan may take your body and your life but he shall never have your heart and soul if you ask God to protect you.
