This was probably the hardest nation to give clear cut recommendations on. Especially with the Ki-87 and the A7M. My final piece of advice, there are a lot of good fighters in the Japanese Tech Tree, and the premiums like the Ki-87 that are gonna require a certain skill set and experience to use effectively. Basically, if you feel you are ready to make the commitment and you feel have you put in the time. Some of these bigger purchases we said to wait on, maybe good for you to go for it. If you are newer and unsure, I really don't feel you are missing out on a whole lot if you stick with what you can find for free in the Tech Tree. Hey Bo, I would personally recommend the Corsair, just becouse it has a 400+% sl multiplyer, so it is one of, if not the most effective sl grinders in the game.

Ki-87 is the best energy propeller fighter.... it’s very stiff tho so you can’t turn fight with it but when u know energy fighting and BnZ then it is the best or at least same good plane as german Ta-152
I'm a little surprised you didn't talk about the pilot that the premium A5M4 is named after. Matsuo Hagiri was one of the few Japanese pilots to survive all the way through to the end of the war, was a part of the squadron that flew the Zero for the first time, and quite possibly holds the record for best mustache ever grown by a fighter pilot in history.

I am literally one plane from getting it (grinding to get the Arado 234), and I can already feel the repair cost.

Idk about everyone else, but the A7M is hands down the best plane I have, it turns like the devil, soaks up bullets, and pulls energy out of nowhere
agree, but it does lock up at high speed, other than that, good aircraft
I feel like it burns a bit too easily IMO, like the zeroes.
In general, I prefer the army air force Japanese planes. More durable, and good speed and energy retention.
i get the opposite experience with the A7M, the only good time i had in it was evading a Yak 9 for 3 mins. Turning is good but nobody wants to turn, and for some weird reason I can't put out flames when hit which my zero can do often.

I concur with your last point Bo. Three fourths of the vehicles in War Thunder (and that I love), whether air, ground, or naval I've never even heard about. War Thunder is as much of a vehicle history archive/class as it is a game. I also remember those days as well. I was like "How could you only fly that thing all day?!" I actually have a funny story about that era. I voiced my previous statement in chat and one of them PM'd me and said "How about I show you" Then proceeded not only to show me, but taught me how to fly them and some other pointers. I friended him that day, and we played together for the longest time. He hasn't been on in four years. I miss him, he helped me appreciate the game more and become a better pilot.
Honestly makes me regret not starting this game sooner. They sound like cool people. You still run into a few, but not enough people like them in my experience.

It's a bit challenging to dogfight with the Ki-44-II Otsu, but hilarious as things just disappear when you hit them.
I have always adored my A6M5 Ko in WT. It's an amazing fighter, and those belt fed Type 99's are good at shredding things. I ground out basically the entire Japanese tree with mine
the type 99 is a licensed build Oerlikon 20mm / its the famoust 20mm gun of ww2 ^^ thats a fact

I'm a HUGE fan of the Ki-96. It climbs like a monster and gets an airspawn. You almost always end up over the enemy and with great altitude performance, it's a force to be reckoned with.
Ki-96 has to be one of the best planes in warthunder. Watch Jengar's video on it. Few planes climb faster and accelerate like this does. You can harass single seat fighters all day who cant keep up with you. Im an average pilot at best and still get multiple kills with this thing. And the nose armament is awesome. I bring it out in tank RB just to sweep the skies of enemy cas.

This isn't relating to a premium but still about one of the Japanese vehicles: The B7A2 is absolutely crazy. Most people approach it thinking it will be an easy kill because it is a dive bomber until it turns on the spot and shows you that it has twin 20mm cannons. My first experience against them lead to me diving on them and then being chased by 3 at a time (probably a friend group/squad) in which they somehow always had an energy advantage. I never dove on a B7A2 again. It's a shame that the Japanese tech tree isn't more popular, I love it's vehicles.

The Ki-96 can climb better than anything in the Japanese tech tree at its BR, I've had it to 700kmh in a dive without compressing. Its the ultimate sleeper boom and zoomer. The 37mm has the HEI shell in the air targets belt, which destroys heavy bombers and just melts fighters. Definitely a buy from my experience with it (200+ matches - 150+ wins)
With a cautious and methodical playstyle, the j2m5 30mm can whoop butt. As you said the guns do somewhat reliably one shot if not cripple other planes. It's basically a more lethal j2m5 from 5.3 at a 4.7 for the people that can get used to the weapons. It's what I personally used to grind up to the rank 6
Japanese F4U is absolute beast on tier 2 you have 460% SL rewards, like wtf that is amazing. I LIKE CORSAIRS AND FIRST GAME WITH JAPANESE ONE - I HAD 7 KILLS
Nice video, just have to say you missed one fact about the KI line planes.. they were also the first planes in the world to employ gravity assisted flaps, that could withstand fast deployment.. they achieved this by inventing the locking mechanism that we find in today's seatbelts in our cars, that lock up when pulled to fast.. this is one of the things that alowed the KI planes added maneuverability at higher speeds to compete with american boom and zoom planes.

The KI 61 Tada is such an amazing Plane... First premium for the Japanese I bought and its so much fun to fly it, insane SL multiplier and it can a bit of everything... Turning, energy fight, bnz... It's a BUY for me even without discount

I purchased both the J2M4 Raiden Kai and the J2M5 Raiden premiums during a sale, I have to say they are both wonderful aircraft. 84 rounds is plenty with those 30s

Fun fact! on the Ki 44 II Otsu you can use the cannon to slow down. On the ground, it can even push you back.
You can do that with every plane that has a gun
The a7m is such a massive aircraft and you notice it only when you spawn it close to your teammates. I always liked aircraft with strong color contrast but i feel like when i fight against them i always spot them really easily.
I picked up both the A6M5 ko and the Ki-61 Hei for 50% off, and using those two in my 4.7 lineup for arcade battles is fucking amazing. Ending every match with 11+ kills and 100k in the bank, and a ton of research.
I used to be one of those A6M5 pilots who flew it alot and i still fly it to this day but i have most of the Japanese air tree researched and i moved on to try to fly other things but i do come back to fly my zeroes and japan was the first nation i made it to top tier in for both planes and tanks and i did fight you in one of ur xp55 vids when i was akaspiderman12 which I changed my name and it was great to have you as a worthy foe

Big thing to remember the Premium Japanese Sabre is also sitting at 9.3 and it sorely suffers at this tiering and has been power crept pretty hard. It doesnt have the extra engine power of a CL Sabre from other nations in the tech tree. The missiles are nice, but the plane flys like boat with them on it, and the plane just doesnt have the performance for 9.3 any more, especially with constant 9.7 uptiers.
If you want the Japanese jets. Get the A6M5 Ko premium pack and use it to grind till you find a jet you enjoy then use that to get other planes down the line, maybe even talisman the one you find you like.
playing japanese Air RB for like 7 years,still play A6Ms every chance i get
but i think a part of why JP's tree is getting less play is part due to matchmaking,i start playing war thunder back when there is only air and leave about 2017,back then Japan mostly face US and UK in pacific map and it's is like epic historical reenactment every match and it was fun as hell
but when me and my zero flying friends came back early this year we find that we mostly team up with US and face random thing on random map,flying is still fun but the history part(which is very important for our enjoyment) is lost

Funnily enough, the premium and tech tree F-86's are meant to have the camos swapped around, as in the F-40 JASDF is meant to have the F-40's skin and vice versa (also, I agree, I prefer the premium one's current skin over the tech tree's one)

As Bo and crew are one of the few content creators that don't get sucked into the whole new vehicle/ dev server hype thing. What you see are a bunch of guys having fun, that's becoming a rarity in what is becoming a very frustrating game.
Gaijin have employed other youtubers (Oxygen Thief and Mike Goes Boom are two I know of) who IMHO used to produce unbiased videos with good info but now produce nothing independent but collaborate on propaganda for the next update.
Best he stays as Bo I feel, we need more Bo.
@@iffracem That's a lie oxygen thief hasn't uploaded since he joined and Mike has uploaded 4 videos 1 being a Russian tank, 1 being a German tank, 1 being on the new game since it's in beta, and the last one on the updated graphics. So that's not biased lol.

Both their personal uploads decreased, Uptight Oxi to zero, and Perverted Mike to a small handful. Because they basically abandoned who they were for money.

Yeah, War Thunder has taught me a lot about super cool Japanese WWII planes. P1Y1 is maybe my favorite, for looks more than for capability.
Not the newest guide, but useful. I ended up buying the Ki96 because, its unique to the tree, it climbs like hell, handles well, and its the cheapest at rank 3.

N1K and KI84 are still awesome, lot of fun, and with higher tier its a bit of struggle props against jets but hell of a one. The J7 is still unique and I wish Gaijin just could put the planned Jet version into the game. That would be amazing..

For me personally the japanese 109 E-7 is one of if not the best premium aircraft in the game. At 1000GE it's pretty cheap, it has a very good SL multiplyer of 2.5 and my current KD ratio with it is 6:1. The thing is a fair priced, SL grinding monster.

I get an insane amount of kills with my Ki 44-I 34. By far one of my best premium planes even when playing at a 4.0 BR.

7:21 correction: it has two 12.7 mm Ho-103s (not 7.7 mm type 89s), which are pretty decent now that they got HEF rounds.
The Ki-27 is actually quite a bit faster than the A5M4,, turns even better and climbs far better. I like the A5M4, but the Ki-27 is a fantastic performer.
J2M4 also has 60 fewer rounds per gun in the Type 99-2’s

the A6 Ko is the one plane that ive owned for 3 or so years and i never knew i had it.
The only problem with the JASDF F86 - F40 is the br. 9.3 is a bit too much for a sabre. I get it, it does have missile it’s very manueverable but encountering Phantoms and mig 19s- its impossible to get a kill with aim 9b
I got the Ki-87 in a pack forever ago. Its a very solid plane. iirc I paid 20 USD and got some premium time and GE with it. 6k GE seems steep.
I got it for like 1.3k GE after I opened those crates

I think you guys forgot the J2M4 Kai. Interesting plane considering it looks similar to the J2M5 but with 4 20mm cannons instead of 2 30s.

I have a idea for a vid it is where there is 1 maus and 2 to 3 asu57's and the maus eats the asu's and takes them to battle so there not shot and then you deploy them.
If I may make one history correction... the Ki-27 was not based on the A5M. It was in fact a completely different aircraft that had a roughly similar appearance. However in the same fly-off for the contract the Ki-27 eventually won, Mitsubishi entered the Ki-33 which was a modified Ki-18, which was a modified Ki-14, the airframe which became the A5M.

Good stuff! Though I need to question your logic when you say the 190A5 is not really worth it, but then rave over the ki 61 because it has 2 mg 151? Wing mounted vs centerline. Well not sure how the ki 61s are flying these days and ofc i have the 190 fan boi bias. lol
I always preferred 109s to the 190s and the Ki-61 planes are near godlike turnfighters, nearly as much as Zeros, while still having respectable top speeds.
All while if you invest enough effort you can also take them into really high altitudes.
Now the hei Hien and the Tada's get MG151 Minengeschös rounds.
The strange and sad truth is, Ki-61s can be used much much more effectively than Zeros.
This is so weird. The ki86 is 6000ge but there's also a Ki87 pack for $30 which is MUCH cheaper. Is that a buy?
Wish there were some better premium cas options. Flying boats and b17s are fun but not when they're 3 AA trucks on the enemy team all looking up at your big red dots.

Thing is....besides the marketplace we don't get coupons in the boxes dropped...I have a daily reward of over 100 days n I've got maybe 2 coupons....n like 2 test drives w the warbonds....if I got more coupons in loot boxes I'd be more apt to spend the money...what a shame

Also did you know that the during second WW the Thai Air force used their Ki-27 to battle against USAF P-51 and P-38 ? They managed to downed one P-38 and damaged 2 P-51 but as you would expected all Ki-27 were lost.
