Being a sewer all my life, you couldn't have chosen a better place to start. Petticoats seem to be so forgiving and give a huge sense of achievement. I have made many over the years all types all fabrics, they always come out lovely. Keep going
Great job! A tip for making the lines in tucks more even is to iron every fold before you sew. It is a pain but it allows you to make the adjustments that will hide irregular sewing before it’s stitched. Looking forward to the next part!
Love TV stuff for patterns. This petticoat looks so good for a first go at sewing something completely from scratch. Can't wait to see the lace knitting bits added to it! *waves pom poms*
You mentioned you didn’t know why the seams came before the tucks. The bottom is sewn together in a tube before the tucks so they can be even. It’s a pain but it looks like a mess if you try to line up the pieces separately after they’ve been tucked. Also the horizontal tucks going straight across the vertical seams helps to build the volume you need. That looks amazing for a first project, too!
I was just going to say this! Also, it can help the gathers if you do shorter sections instead of gathering across the whole skirt. But an amazing first garment! Loving this project!
it looks fantastic!!! Here are my tips, when you're doing gathering make sure you're on your machine's longest stitch length and that the thread you pull is the bobbin one. Because of the way machines loop stitches it's easier to pull that thread so you put less tension on it. OR hand gathering is SOOO much easier to pull and gets tighter if you're gathering down a lot. Also TV patterns are fantastic but if you use one for your bodice/shirtwaist be prepared for the sleeve to be too big. I'm currently working on a TV bodice and my size G armhole perfectly fits the size A sleeve, the size G sleeve is 4" too big. I'm so impressed with your first project though!
A little hint. When sewing darts don’t reverse sew off the edge and tie a knot. When you start making prettier clothes, reversing on your dart can make a dimple that looks ugly.
You did such an awesome job. I wouldn't have even TRIED something like that. the mistakes you see aren't visible to anyone and certainly don't make the petticoat any less terrific
Sara list 0 seconds ago I know this video is a year old and you're probably a lot more experienced now but I have to say I am so impressed with how this came out! I wouldn't have guessed this was hour first piece of clothing. I've been sewing cor years and I can't machine gather! I always get frustrated and do it by hand. Good for you!
Just for your reference purposes, it’s your ruffle not your flounce ( that’s a completely different beast ) , great job for your first go and sewing on the floor ❤️❤️ loving your channel ❤️❤️❤️
Great result for a first time project. Many give up and never finish a first effort. I’d say you nailed it considering you actually knit the lace yourself.
I'm so fascinated by this journey! Thank you so much for sharing it with us. It is super, super inspiring. I also love seeing someone else who likes to jump in the deep end when learning something new. :) Yay for a bit of obsession! And I appreciate your willingness to learn on camera and help us all out.
The pintucks may not have come out perfectly but they add such a lovely detail to the petticoat! And honestly as an undergarment it really doesn’t have to be perfect and is a great project to learn on :)
Also- have you thought of knitting garters for your stockings? I made them for my wearing-out modern stockings and they keep them up really well. My pattern, however, was loosely inspired by a pattern from the 1840s, so I don't know if knitted garters made it to the '90s.
For a first wearable, you should be very proud. I’ve sewn many years and the only part that bothered me was your gathering stitches showing. Normally they are contained in the seam allowance. My suggested fix would be to remove the gathering threads showing beneath the seam. Now that you’ve captured the gathers in the seam, the threads used to gather are no longer needed.
Next time you print a pattern like this, you are usually able to look in the PDF, and hide layers (other sizes). See if thats an option for you next time!
Wish you had showed how to make the waistband, that is why I watched actually. Looking to figure that out.Was the tie done on the inside of the waistband?
When we’re learning a new skill, we do it for the experience, and the fun of learning. You did a great job 😊

Sewing on the floor: total mood. I remember days like that
Some say that one reason to do a petticoat is to train new sewing techniques (or sewing in general). So it fills even that purpose!
For gathering large sections of fabric, zigzagging over fishing line or dental floss tends to be a lot easier. ❤️
Also use a pin tuck foot to guide the cord through without sewing through the cord and having to start over.
Wear gloves to save your hands and skin when you pull the threads, floss, or cord to create your gathers 😊

It's lovely seeing you starting to sew with such ambitious projects

I can’t wait to see how the lace turns out!

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels! I’m really excited to see the rest of your journey in this project!
It looks so pretty. Cannot wait to see how the lace elevates it.

Awesome!!! Thank you! I love watching your videos!!
I really love the work you do. Its inspiring to see.
The petticoat swirls beautifully!
Your channel just popped up on my recommendations, I am so happy, you are very talented and good luck with your channel.
You did a wonderful job for it being your first time!

You should have done all the tucks with your treadle and tucker marker.
So lovely. I'm really enjoying watching your process and progress. Thanks for sharing.
just came across your channel today and subscribed. Great video and a lovely job on the petticoat.

Loved this video! I'm looking into sewing some ruffly petticoats so this video was really helpful! Thank you for sharing! New subscriber 😀
I think it’s lovely!

Is it possible to make a corset cover?
