I use RUclips to learn and practice languages by listening and watching along with subtitles if I need to do so, so I wouldn't say it's unproductive to me. Especially due to the fact that I don't consume content in my native language anymore. So it's a way for me to both entertain myself and learn languages at the same time. Same with reading, I don't like reading in my native language, but, if I'm reading in English or French, for instance, I'll feel way more productive. Even so, not everything has to be productive. We, as human beings, need rest to keep up our pace and avoid burnout.
Thats good! The guy in the video is not telling everyone to do it Its for the people who just mindlessly wasts their time on youtube watching shorts or videos all day I appreciate you that your doing something productive
Man you're really awesome. I've never heard about that extension and it is exactly what I was looking for. I gave up on social media 2 months ago (except YT, of course) and yeah, my free time is now spent on YT. Btw regarding the educational videos, whenever I watch a video I try to sum it up in my mind or to take notes of what I've learned from it. It really helps and it makes you more aware of what you are actually learning from those videos.
My guy you must be a wizard, I had this exact conversation with a friend two days ago, he brought up all the points you did including the very same TED talk. Impeccable timing
I think RUclips noticed I copied 50+ links to my notes to watch videos later and now it's just like "Hey bro maybe you're to addicted. Here, watch this guide"
thank you, this has actually helped me :) the advice to look at your additions straight into their eyes is a powerful one if you're at a point in your life it would actually be able to work ❤️

This was actually mind chaging, I needed to hear this. Thank you man!
I recently picked my top 10 youtubers that I feel genuine excitement and happiness when they upload, and try to just check in with them every few days. I catch up on what they've uploaded, then move on with my day. For my top 3, I've subscribed to their patreons. Using those feature-blocking apps has also been extremely helpful because I can direct myself straight to my subscriptions page, and its been fun looking at all the new uploads, realizing that most of them really are just useless filler vids that make me feel nothing, and systematically unsubscribing.
Thank you. I have quit tons of social medias over the years, except the RUclips, and I literally use exactly the same excuse you showed... Sure I have learned tons of useful stuff from YT, which I have implemented irl, but 80% of it really is a pure waste of time... Thanks a lot, gonna implement it. (I already have those extensions but I still find myself watching "kinda productive" videos...) Let's hope new addiction doesn't replace the YT lol (because, main issue comes from within, not the apps, we want to escape real life... Somehow we have to use free time productively and avoid escapism...)
develop a system that helps you study. chronological barriers: Involve time limits on activities Geographical barriers: Involve physical restrictions Categorical: Involve setting rules on activity types
as some others have mentioned in the CS here: engaging with the 'content' you consume through comments, cleansing your timeline/suggestions by just clicking not interested, creating a separate account for educational stuff does help. In my experience though, i ended up barely using it. In the end, we can waste time by doing what we truly enjoy- something that leaves us thinking and prompting us with action even after its experience. It's all about being mindful fr
THIS IS REALLY REALLY HELPFUL!!!, for RUclips shorts it is soooo addictive, i like youtube but i haaate shorts and i was not able to stop them from my phone at least , THANK YOU!
1st. a good informational youtube video isnt a waste of time just because it is, it will be a waste of time because you are not really note taking, so the issue is not on youtube itself, but on your discipline 2nd. this untrapped app is good. There are so many researches done to make youtube more addicting, and those researches made this whole layout of the website. So yes, turning off the comment section, limiting suggestion page, limiting interaction with the app, is going to be helpful getting off youtube 3rd. Replacing the habit with a habit, this is the correct answer, and the first thing people need to do if they want to quit youtube. Find something you will equally enjoy, or atleast have the discipline to do everyday, then just do that instead of youtube.
I've almost completely quit watching RUclips on the app. I've gone from 6 hours and 3 hours as my highest and lowest in a week, to 2 hours and 20 minutes being my highest and lowest in a week. I still use it a lot on my laptop, but when I'm away from home, I don't watch RUclips at all. This change took me around a month for it to really stick, but it's definitely working. I'm reading a lot more irl, but I haven't gotten around to actually reading on my phone instead. I still use the internet on my phone a lot instead of the RUclips app. So getting offline and into a digital book will be my next step now that staying off the RUclips app is a success.
This comes at a right time for me. Most difficult thing is to find something else to do. I close youtube and then still look at screens, playing games, learning things etc.
I mostly just watch content strictly from the handful of channels I'm subscribed to. This is actually one of the off-times I'm watching a video from someone I've never heard of before.
this really feels like one of those videos that didn't need to be made, but got made for the sake of others who didn't already have enough common sense or enough willpower to just stop
The only objection I have to RUclips being not educational, is on the tech side. You just naturally gain super useful knowledge and It's usually pretty entertaining if you like tech stuff. That is the only scenario I can think of where it's the best of both worlds with you actually retaining the valuable knowledge if you find it interesting. Edit: I forgot to mention this, but with consistent watching, you can get to the knowledge level of the CompTIA ITF+ certification in a couple months without all of the boring official lectures and exam. Just casually watching nerds mess with PC's, phones, and servers.
Recently my strategy has been to block RUclips on my phone, but keep in unrestricted on my laptop. My phone has always been the main way that I watch it, and by restricting it I'm forcing myself to actually have to intentionally sit down to watch something, as opposed to just filling in any bored moment that I have with RUclips. Keeping it to just my room as opposed to literally anywhere I go has helped.
I have spent maybe half an hour in the past week trying to tune my feed and its STILL awful. Only good thing that happened was finding this video among one of the reloads. Subscribed!
4:59 my brother in Christ, please draw the arms at the shoulders 😭😭 jokes aside, I had a feeling this video would be life changing, I installed a whole entourage of extensions to tweak my youtube to not be limiting, but not be enticing in any way period. now I just need the same for mobile...
Lately, a couple of days ago, I've been starting to feel the same way as you and what you've described in the video. I thought it's was just me, but it turns out it's not. I'm glad to have been notified about this video. I do like the idea of the extension (untrap for youtube) which is nice, I probably have regulate or lessen my usage, look for quality content rather than quantities of video to watch. I do like the educational side of things on YT, although it's true that after watching one video, I nonetheless am still the same after 😅 unless I apply them towards something. Either way great timing of the video👍
Dearrow is a great extension too. It removes clickbait from titles and thumbnails, with most videos having titles created by others that tells you exactly what the video is about
underrated tip: turn off your watch history and it will remove your feed and shorts on the app [i came to this video because it is among my 5 subscriptions]
thank you so much for the extension and application recommendations! I've been looking for tools like these that don't make me simply want to uninstall them and get back to youtube. The trick of really looking at the videos is helpful too! Another trick I employ is using extensions that remove clickbait thumbnails and set the thumbnail to a random frame from the video
I realised a few months back what while I can get rid of TikTok and Instagram to get rid of the doom scroll with short form content, it's basically impossible on RUclips. So I disabled the mobile app and only watch YT on a browser (both mobile and desktop) with things that block shorts and thumbnails (it was ridiculously helpful ignoring those AI generated Reddit drama videos, because with thumbnails I always wanted to know how the click bait ended, also disabled recommended under the video, so I don't get sucked into a queue of videos to watch). I still use YT, but less and I can actually tell myself to stop.
I’ve just been scrolling my home feed for an hour while eating lunch and got recommended this video lol. I have a timer for YT so I don’t over watch but I just turn it off every time it pops up. Step 3 is my biggest challenge. Why do my other hobbies when I can binge (gain instant gratification from)RUclips/Shorts? We start tomorrow 😂
What I like to do is just listen to music I’ve downloaded on my phone while being offline, because listening to a sick beat still is entertaining but it also allows me to focus on other things a lot more easily too!
Been doing this for a while, i made it so my extension show the videos in cinema mode always, this hides everything but does not make the video fullscreen, it was not because i was adicted to be honest (It was the design), as the first thing of "Just look at the video and judge it" it's my automatic way of behaving in youtube, the only reason i still use recommended its because i like to be on top of the things that are happening, and the recommended are perfectly accurate at giving me videos about topics with updates on things i like without having to subscribe to someone with no other content worth watching. It's insane how a video about this has been done, its so honest, it does not even feel like a youtube video, just pure advice lol Also there's a extension that removes clickbait thumbnails, and another one community driven that makes normal titles instead of clickbait ones, yah, these will be ussfull for adicted people for sure as these people are simply the prey falling for the bait, once there's no bait, the prey does not get traped yipiii!
What I found is that intention defines utility. If you didn't intentionally "intend" to watch it, it's very likely useless (even if it's informational) and will not add meaning to your life or situation. But intention requires honesty, because there are psychological dimensions to why we love to consume media (dopamine being one of them).
The thing that makes "quitting" RUclips so hard for me is that I also use it as a utility- I watch ASMR videos at night to fall asleep, and its where I listen to all my music. And no, I can't just "buy albums or download it into a player instead" because the majority of the music I listen to is extremely indie and is only really available as RUclips videos, and I don't subscribe to music streaming services (which don't have everything I listen to either). I will, however, take the shorts blocking app. I have shorts blocked on PC but I didn't think there was a way to do it on mobile.
@@dry4smash946mm… I suppose. Though my poison is mainly recommended videos, so I guess I could turn those off except for one day a week or something EDIT: Apparently on iOS it can’t block shorts, RIP
I watched and binged two of the channels at 1:04 just this afternoon instead of studying for a major upcoming exam, so this video being recommended was a good signal. I would like to leave a small tip of my own for YT shorts: So I used to watch shorts just as every other addicted person on the planet does - mindlessly scrolling for hours. I’d do this sometimes even until 3am, and most of the time I can’t even remember what I watched. It was like being hypnotized, and I noticed it was destroying so much of my time. I then made a self-restriction on myself to never scroll shorts. I will ONLY watch the few recommended ones on the homepage, and that’s it. I tap/click, watch, and leave. Then tap/click the next one on the page if I want. If I’m in an absolute crave for more shorts, then I might refresh the page and get a new batch of recommended ones. But I don’t do this much, I usually just take what I am served. I’ve been doing this for a year and I’m now a certified non-scroller with shorts. I absolutely love it. With long-form videos though… that might need some more time to ease off the addiction. I might try that zen app ngl. Great video!
I have a fantastic idea for this, clear your youtube history and turn it off. You won't get recommendations or be able to watch shorts unless you search something even when you can only watch like 5
Been on youtube for 11 years not exactly sure what i have gained from it. Short term youtube is extremely beneficial if you need answers for something specific but im not aware of any long term benefits. So maybe the way to make the most of youtube is to ask yourself what you need answering before you even open the app else youll just scroll and look for something fun rather than actually think what you need. Never scroll, always ask why you need to open that app before you then look for it
The extension is great, i found that when you remove thumbnails the titles are 98% less appealing. I literally wasnt drown to any of the content provided. Even my own watch list that i was exited to watch.
A trick that I used to significantly reduce my time on youtube was to delete my browsing and search history on youtube. If you do that your front page will go completely blank - as in there will be no videos on the page. It is so because youtube recently made it so that if they don't have any data about you, they will not show you anything. So if you delete and then pause your youtube search and browsing history, you are essentially permanently stopping youtube reccomendations. Kind of hardcore but doing this will make you more decisive with what you want to do on youtube.
You watch RUclips because you've convinced yourself you're learning something. I watch RUclips because I'm a pathetic loser with no friends or hobbies and staring into a screen is the only way I can momentarily escape my sadness. We are not the same.
RUclips has been incredibly helpful but my association with it being helpful does mean I usually give it more credit than it may deserve in a given day
Yes AND no. I'm a very busy mom of three, one with special needs. So I have no friends, just some fam (in this season of life.) And they're mainly support, not anyone I aspire to be. I also heavily believe in the idea of "you are a reflection of the 5 people you spend the most time around." I get on here a few times a day, check my notifications and typically add videos to playlists to either listen to while I go about my day, or, if it's really something I want my EYES upon, I'll simply put it in my 'watch later.' I feel like the moms I follow on here have literally made me a better mother and person. We interact in the comments, as well as with the other moms that are watching. This is probably really useful advice to those who aren't already carefully curating their FYP's. I love YT, and will probably never move away from it. Also, thanks for bringing up all those settings I had no idea were available.
out of the hundreds of yt videos ive watched, probably less than 10 have made an impact on my life. i think ill have to get out and do something now DFTBA
Truth to be spoken, I hate that whenever I open the RUclips app I get the shorts section recommended ahhh it's soo annoying. Even in my most brainrotten moments, I caught myself watching videos of Family guy + Subway surfers and I think that's the worst type of content
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with watching content for entertainment, or things that aren’t necessarily “productive”. The human mind needs breaks every now and then, and watching a few videos is harmless. Just don’t go over the limit 👍
I actually get a lot of value from YT, for education it has helped me miles on my field not to mention as a news feed it has helped me figure out which country i'm heading towards for a better future. That said i have some struggles with ertaiment as well, so the way i deal with them is by "saving" videos i want to see in the moment or want to rewatch for taking notes in "temporal" playlists, that's how i put away the FOMO on most things, and for handeling the videos i "need" to watch i just play a few seconds to add them to the history with the sole intention of only watching videos through the history that way i dont fill my playlist as fast as i would do by always going back to the suggestion feed
Here's my contribution to this discussion-motivated by another commenter who said we should comment on every video as a way to truly think about the stuff learned from videos. I have OCD and a big problem that comes with this disorder (to me) is procrastination and avoidance. I procrastinate not because of laziness but because the task feels so huge, so impossible and I need it to be so perfect, that I end up avoiding it at all costs (but end up doing it anyways and most times the result has much less quality than what I'm capable of). The thing is that I ALSO procrastinate on my hobbies. Gaming, watching series, reading, drawing, you name it I avoid it. Some time ago the procrastination was spent on discord, then instagram, then youtube and now on reddit (help). I'm treating it with professional help but it feels so bad to not even enjoy my hobbies. Why bother getting off youtube if I'll get on reddit or whatever is in front of me?

Especially due to the fact that I don't consume content in my native language anymore. So it's a way for me to both entertain myself and learn languages at the same time. Same with reading, I don't like reading in my native language, but, if I'm reading in English or French, for instance, I'll feel way more productive.
Even so, not everything has to be productive. We, as human beings, need rest to keep up our pace and avoid burnout.
Thats good! The guy in the video is not telling everyone to do it
Its for the people who just mindlessly wasts their time on youtube watching shorts or videos all day
I appreciate you that your doing something productive
Man you're really awesome. I've never heard about that extension and it is exactly what I was looking for. I gave up on social media 2 months ago (except YT, of course) and yeah, my free time is now spent on YT. Btw regarding the educational videos, whenever I watch a video I try to sum it up in my mind or to take notes of what I've learned from it. It really helps and it makes you more aware of what you are actually learning from those videos.
My guy you must be a wizard, I had this exact conversation with a friend two days ago, he brought up all the points you did including the very same TED talk. Impeccable timing
are you sure that you're friend is not Easy, Actually himself??
@dreninfashion I asked him the exact same thing... He dodged the question, curious innit...
@@GabrielDoesAThing funny that isn't it?
everything is always interconnected somehow i don't really know why it also happens to me
I think RUclips noticed I copied 50+ links to my notes to watch videos later and now it's just like "Hey bro maybe you're to addicted. Here, watch this guide"
I can safely say that 0.1% of videos are worth watching and then 99.9% of the others are slop
thank you, this has actually helped me :)
the advice to look at your additions straight into their eyes is a powerful one if you're at a point in your life it would actually be able to work ❤️
This was actually mind chaging, I needed to hear this.
(I already have those extensions but I still find myself watching "kinda productive" videos...)
Let's hope new addiction doesn't replace the YT lol (because, main issue comes from within, not the apps, we want to escape real life... Somehow we have to use free time productively and avoid escapism...)
I like this channel so much. Pls make a video on how to study for long hours effectively.

bout pooed myself when I saw my thumbnail at 3:17 lol. Big fan brother (although I'll wont see another one of your videos again thanks to this one 😣)
Thanks a lot 🙏 and I appreciate your emails by the way signed up a while ago and I get one every day 😄
Mad respect for using your own content as exemples of time wasters
as some others have mentioned in the CS here: engaging with the 'content' you consume through comments, cleansing your timeline/suggestions by just clicking not interested, creating a separate account for educational stuff does help. In my experience though, i ended up barely using it. In the end, we can waste time by doing what we truly enjoy- something that leaves us thinking and prompting us with action even after its experience. It's all about being mindful fr
0:43 Historia Civilis mentioned, subscriber gained, very happy, time to binge Roman history.
THIS IS REALLY REALLY HELPFUL!!!, for RUclips shorts it is soooo addictive, i like youtube but i haaate shorts and i was not able to stop them from my phone at least , THANK YOU!
1st. a good informational youtube video isnt a waste of time just because it is, it will be a waste of time because you are not really note taking, so the issue is not on youtube itself, but on your discipline
2nd. this untrapped app is good. There are so many researches done to make youtube more addicting, and those researches made this whole layout of the website. So yes, turning off the comment section, limiting suggestion page, limiting interaction with the app, is going to be helpful getting off youtube
3rd. Replacing the habit with a habit, this is the correct answer, and the first thing people need to do if they want to quit youtube. Find something you will equally enjoy, or atleast have the discipline to do everyday, then just do that instead of youtube.
I totally agree your ideas. Most people just try to quit social media without adding new habits to their daily routines. Consequently, they fail.
May I know what do u use for tracking ur time on RUclips on the browser
1:07 Man Carry binge watch session
This comes at a right time for me. Most difficult thing is to find something else to do. I close youtube and then still look at screens, playing games, learning things etc.
Ironically, this is the most useful video I watched in a while.
Subscribed!
2:59 nice one lol ( my evil side: click on report abuse. its clearly a abuse| but i, ok stop it, then move on.)
The description tho💀💀💀
"getting off RUclips is easy, actually"
You're goddamn right *closes the video*
4:59 my brother in Christ, please draw the arms at the shoulders 😭😭
jokes aside, I had a feeling this video would be life changing, I installed a whole entourage of extensions to tweak my youtube to not be limiting, but not be enticing in any way period. now I just need the same for mobile...
BLESS YOU for the mobile app!!! This alone will fix my biggest problem and I fucking love it(it has all the short form content in it)
Dearrow is a great extension too.
Thank god RUclips wants to lend a hand to us making the app and website as useless, bloated and messy shit as possible.
Just god that app, HUGELY HELPFULL THANK YOU
This video looks useful but realistically won’t change anything
This man is trying to save my life. I'm so grateful to you. These apps are so useful. I wish I had known about these apps earlier
Its crazy how your recommended videos are very similar to mine. I installed the app. Im already watching less YT shorts 😂
nice detail how the first step is the most important, because usually its the last step, making you watch more
Love that i'm watching this after binge watching a "100%'ing stardew valley in 300 days" video that was 2 hours long
I am only 10 seconds in and I feel personally attacked 😂
It's insane how a video about this has been done, its so honest, it does not even feel like a youtube video, just pure advice lol
Also there's a extension that removes clickbait thumbnails, and another one community driven that makes normal titles instead of clickbait ones, yah, these will be ussfull for adicted people for sure as these people are simply the prey falling for the bait, once there's no bait, the prey does not get traped yipiii!
actually really nice exstension and app recommendations. Thanks a lot I was looking for something like this
I would rather watch productive videos on RUclips rather than actively decrease my IQ on TikTok
the same thing
that's what I'm sayin
Watching hour long essays don't increase your IQ twink
What I found is that intention defines utility. If you didn't intentionally "intend" to watch it, it's very likely useless (even if it's informational) and will not add meaning to your life or situation. But intention requires honesty, because there are psychological dimensions to why we love to consume media (dopamine being one of them).
OMG, your feed is so similar to that of mine 😅
Its almost as if the screenshots were of my feed!
RUclips is very good to immerse in a languague, IMO the best place for input.
I have shorts blocked on PC but I didn't think there was a way to do it on mobile.
you could ytu turn off the home page so you can only acsess your videos from a playlist of the utility videos you like
@@dry4smash946mm… I suppose. Though my poison is mainly recommended videos, so I guess I could turn those off except for one day a week or something
EDIT: Apparently on iOS it can’t block shorts, RIP
I watched and binged two of the channels at 1:04 just this afternoon instead of studying for a major upcoming exam, so this video being recommended was a good signal. I would like to leave a small tip of my own for YT shorts:
So I used to watch shorts just as every other addicted person on the planet does - mindlessly scrolling for hours.
Thanks! I'll try it
I have a fantastic idea for this, clear your youtube history and turn it off.
I love it that this was recommended to me.
Actually. thank you.
Thanks, this video was EXATLY what I wanted.
Thank you so much you just made it easy for me, now I can just study peacefully😌
Thank you. It's insane how addicted I am to youtube.
Thanks for the advice!
You somehow know my exact problems wtf
You watch RUclips because you've convinced yourself you're learning something. I watch RUclips because I'm a pathetic loser with no friends or hobbies and staring into a screen is the only way I can momentarily escape my sadness.
We are not the same.
RUclips has been incredibly helpful but my association with it being helpful does mean I usually give it more credit than it may deserve in a given day
Yes! I now I can block youtube shorts while also simultaneously uploading them myself to get my competitors distracted and gain the upper hand!
1:58 adding yourself to a pile of "a waste of time" is a chad move
2:00 Baller move to include your own thumbnail in this clip, major respect.
Also, thanks for bringing up all those settings I had no idea were available.
out of the hundreds of yt videos ive watched, probably less than 10 have made an impact on my life. i think ill have to get out and do something now DFTBA
yeah, crazy because like you'll have 100 videos saved for "later" but it will never really be useful.
Fun fact, if you clicked on this video you successfully failed to get off RUclips.
Truth to be spoken, I hate that whenever I open the RUclips app I get the shorts section recommended ahhh it's soo annoying.
Even in my most brainrotten moments, I caught myself watching videos of Family guy + Subway surfers and I think that's the worst type of content
how cute, advice i convinced myself i will follow but never will!
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with watching content for entertainment, or things that aren’t necessarily “productive”. The human mind needs breaks every now and then, and watching a few videos is harmless. Just don’t go over the limit 👍
math soucerer actually has nice book collection and roadmap to study math in specific area
Your videos are awesome man, keep making them please 🔥🙌🏻
