I've made a web build of the game on itch.io! If you want to try it out here's the link. thomaseberhart.itch.io/persona-3-in-2d The controls are in the description of the game page.
As someone with a little bit more experience in pixel art, I have a few suggestions: The background and player characters have little to no contrast making it hard to tell them apart. You could decrease the pattern intensity on the background and include less squares. You could make the background a bit darker and make the players a bit lighter or more saturated to contrast, as well as adding a black or white outline around player and enemy sprites. The players and enemies should be the main focus of the game, seeing as the entire battle system revolves around them. I’d suggest you make them slightly bigger to take up more screen space to keep track of them easier. With the player sprites, it’s just a matter of understanding anatomy better. It’s best to practice on a smaller scale to limit yourself more and to challenge your knowledge and pixel usage. Every pixel counts, so you need to make sure you place them in spots that make sense. For reference, you should study older rpgs that use pixel art like Chrono Trigger and Secrets of Mana. I was surprised at how good the shuffle time animation was. You definitely have the potential, all you need to do is practice. Best of luck on your journey. ❤️
If you continue this project can you make the tiles bigger and have less contrast it hurts to look at rn also great video the editing looks professional too Kinda surprised that it hasnt blown up yet
This looks great, instantly subscribed!! Btw, where/how did you start doing game dev/learning how to code? Been meaning to do it myself but genuinely have no clue where to start lol.
I already had programming experience since I have a degree in SWE and work in the industry. As for game dev specifically, I've mostly just messed around with Godot on and off for about a year. I've only really seen one other project to completion in that time, so I think this Persona 3 project improved my skills a lot more than anything else.
i just saw this video and saw "oh cool, this'll be fun to watch" then i saw the subscriber count and i was like "oh. ill just check the end result" 2 minutes later im contemplating how you only have 22 subscribers nvm i just realised this is your first ever video, this is not bad for a debut video, not to mention the game looks pretty good too, hope you dont give up on making videos (unless youre unmotivated to do so) because i wouldnt mind seeing more of your videos, even if its not persona related
Hey thanks! I'm super happy with the amount of people that found this video. I wasn't really expecting anybody to come across it without any external marketing. I'm planning to make more gamedev/programming videos in the future, so look forward to it!
Your work is incredible for the experience you have right now. It's insane how any developer would say that they work isn't good enough but then you ask any other dev with less or the same amount of skill and would say that your work is amazing. Your pixelart doesn't look that bad either, think that you are doing almost everything from scratch and the people that know how to make it beautiful are probably mainly focus on that and not the programing and game design. Your work is amazing, keep going buddy.
Man, this project looks awesome so far! I really appreciate you effort in small details. I would love to see how this will go further, so don't stop on that! What could I recommend to add if you want to get better in fight logic: bring up the speed characteristic from og game (the order of who will take a hit next), more status effects (de-buffs, fear etc.). If you want to improve graphics, I'd like to see new foes. Anyways, awesome job! You did so good I'm just fond of it! Looking forward on what you are going to do next :)
holy wow that is really cool. i love it. would love to try it out myself if you decide to release it sometime. and yes like you said movement sprites and different spires are very necessary but everything that you made is so good you don't seem like an amateur at all keep it up!
I say the entire process was actually amazing to watch and genuinely entertaining. It's impressive how you managed to make everything come together in the end in a very digestible way. Props, Cheers and all that. It's deserved. (Also wish you luck in your pursuit of better Pixel Art skills, as a fellow Pixel Guy)
OMG!!! That looks SO COOL! I love how you started something you weren't 100% confident with (like the Pixel art) I think it's important to have fun even on a "low" skill level, and embrace the limitations. The character sprites look so fun! I love that you added animations and the menu/ui? Sheesh that's so neat. And the whole programming behind it too!! Very impressive. I really enjoyed the video! ❤
Not only is this an incredible project, you made an engaging and entertaining video as well! As someone who is certainly much more of a beginner to gamedev than you seem to be, this is truly inspiring. Great video and I'm looking forward to seeing more!
this is crazy for a debut vid! pixel art is both challenging and very forgiving, in my opinion. since youre working in squares, theres a LOT of control involved. that also means there needs to be intentionality in every pixel you put down. symmetry helps a lot, and also learning when you need to break that symmetry. a tip for pixel art i feel a lot of people dont use is... there's really no reason you can't break out an airbrush or any other kind of brush for shading. theres no reason to limit yourself to pure solid colors. at the dimensions youre working, your brushes will all become "pixellated" anyway. this is something to try with maybe one color at a time--you need to be careful not to muddle your lines when doing this. speaking of lines, try experimenting with line weight with face portraits! at that scale theres no reason to limit yourself to 1x lines. i'd also recommend studying palettes and color theory. the floor tiles in the game were much more desaturated, and compared to dimensions of the original game they would probably look better about 4x bigger. either way, good luck looking up reference videos and images. its really cool youre trying to become master of all trades, and youre already at a really strong start!
Hey mate just wanted to say, that the art isn't as bad as you make it out to be, of course it's not the same as someone who's proficient in it would make but they look geniunly great for a project like this. Looks great, and I hope you enjoy the whole experience of getting better at it :) You've gained yet another subscriber
Thanks a lot! To be fair, the thing that I struggled the most with art-wise was the walk cycles. I was so unhappy with them that I kinda excluded them from the video and even hid them in game with things like the smoke effect from the All Out Attack. Definitely looking to improve in the future!
@ThomasEberhart Ahh, walk cycles... my mortal enemy... I can relate to struggling with them, haha. Anyway, I wish you luck with your future practices and improvements.
I once had a similar idea, I was going to make a remake of Persona 3 on RPG Maker MV, I even made a few sprites. My idea was remaking the first part of the game with simpler gameplay and good looking spritework. Thing is, the sprites do take some time to make and I wasn't very motivated, so it's kinda scrapped. But I may start another project like this.
@@ThomasEberhart Thanks. Since you are a beginner I am going to share what I know with you. It is indeed difficult to make sprites since the amount of pixels you have are limited you have to place them wisely to make the sprite look like the character you have in mind, it's trial and error in my experience with certain details. You have to simplify a lot, only leaving the details that matter the most. You'll sure get better with practice, I did practice by making the sprites for the project I mentioned and making other sprites of characters I have made. I also trained making 16x16 sprites which is very limited. Don't hesitate on using references, I use this program called PureRef that helps me a lot. You can try adding outlines to the sprites, I usually add black outlines to mine and they look pretty good, and maybe try putting a shadow on each corner of the sprite, might look good. Another thing is that since you are limited you can try stylizing your sprites, like only using certain colors, or colors that are mostly blue for example and they might look better and I think that's all I have to say.

Programming, drawing, art direction, colour theory, etc. It’s all insane to me, and that’s not even getting into level design, music, stuff like that. Definitely, Chrono Trigger has some beautiful pixel art. It's a great example that slapping the latest and greatest graphics on something doesn't make it instantly better.

The text for the selected menu option also has a fade transition, where the text for the last menu item fades out while the text for the new menu item fades in. I would also recommend zooming in on the relevant party member/enemy when they're starting an attack or being hit, and an icon or animation being displayed near a character while in the battle menu, whether they're the active party member or the enemy being targeted, in addition to moving the camera may also be something to consider. Some of the pixel art is impressive for a self-proclaimed amateur, but I noticed that the border tiles are placed strangely, being farther away from the walls that are facing away from the camera, when, if anything, there should be space between the border tiles and the walls on all sides but the top to create the illusion of wall height. I also noticed that the upper border tiles are missing during battle, and I agree with another commenter on the small, contrasting tiles being hard to look at during motion. This game is certainly much more impressive than anything I could make, and I have no idea how long these suggestions would take to implement, but I hope you take at least some of this feedback into account if you plan on further development.
Same way as anybody else to be honest. Just a lot of tutorials and some practice and failure. However, I do have a lot of existing experience with programming in general as I went to college for SWE and currently have a job with it. I think that has certainly helped.
@@ThomasEberhart i am studying electronics in collage rn and that includes a lot of coding so it does help me with just understanding it. in a weird way you kind of give me inspiration

Obviously I don't know your skill level, but I encourage you to give it a shot. Having trouble is a part of the process no matter your skill level. Any programmer who seems to get everything right first try is just hiding the failures. Good luck on your game!
You're probably correct there. This concept already took so much time, and a full game comparable to the scope of the original Persona 3 would take years. I certainly could do that, but personally if I'm going to spend 3 years on a game, I'd rather it be my own original game.
AND IT WAS DONE BASED ON P3 FES NOT P3R YPIPPEEEEE (i fucking love this game (((p3f not p3r))) this is so cool)))) the shuffle time looks really good btw :)
Glad someone was able to appreciate that! I love both versions but P3 FES has a certain style that I like a bit more than P3R, particularly with the visuals.

Obviously I don't know your skill level, but I encourage you to give it a shot. Having trouble is a part of the process no matter your skill level. Any programmer who seems to get everything right first try is just hiding the failures. Good luck on your game!
I'm gonna hold your hand when I tell you this, but there is a game called Persona 4 Golden...

You totally should have found some chip tune versions of all the soundtracks and used those instead
I did that for the web build. See the pinned comment if you want to try it out.

is there a download for the game??
You can play it on itch.io. See the pinned comment.
Oh look, another fanmade "concept" of an existing game that won't ever actually be released
You're probably correct there. This concept already took so much time, and a full game comparable to the scope of the original Persona 3 would take years. I certainly could do that, but personally if I'm going to spend 3 years on a game, I'd rather it be my own original game.
persona 3 gba

Bro Renate the persona 3 portable switch port
cant have an original idea smh
AND IT WAS DONE BASED ON P3 FES NOT P3R YPIPPEEEEE (i fucking love this game (((p3f not p3r))) this is so cool))))
the shuffle time looks really good btw :)
Glad someone was able to appreciate that! I love both versions but P3 FES has a certain style that I like a bit more than P3R, particularly with the visuals.
