It makes sense why the mother kept telling her that she had to spend time with her younger cousins and eat dinner with the family INSTEAD OF ON HER OWN :((((((
Looking back after finishing it I think my favorite missed clue was when the Liars go out in the boat and the boys jump off the rocks, but are so so SO terrified when Cadence wants to jump too. They don't fear the huge danger because they're already dead. I actually briefly entertained a theory that she HAD died when she jumped, which would kind of make sense of the roses and purple rocks she claims to have at the end. This was a great video, you covered all the little clues that fascinated me in retrospect.
Looking back I have a feeling she was trying to commit suicide. Like deep down part of her knew they had died but also everything was a blurr because of the PTSD. Maybe why she was "seeing" the dead was because she wouldn't come to terms with the tragedy.
i realized that but didn't connect the dots and thought it was merely a coincidence..... fascinating how much i didn't pick up, perhaps if i read it again it will be that much more powerful
ooohhhh nooo, she was talking about where to scatter her ashes, when they are all ashes... and she talks about who would go to their funerals, and what they would be like, but she missed all their funerals
@@marialemos2363 righht like each time they were uncomfortable i thought its becauze of her condition but its actually about theirs, kinda reminds me of the series boo bitch
omg for some reason that is such a creepy image. like all these hints are spooky but that image is soo haunting, maybe because it would be such a fun and carefree scene if everyone was alive
Spoiler. Some you missed! They're scattered in every paragraph or so but so subtly. On page 126 Gats not in his room plus there are Taft's things in there. Page 119 talking about ashes makes them uncomfortable. Gat says "I don't want my ashes here" not I 'wont' but I 'dont'. Meaning his ashes are already here. I just finished this book an hour ago, I feel so stupid I really enjoyed this though.
i definitely didn't guess the ending! Another clue I saw was the song that Mirren won't stop listening to in that one scene, the "we are perfectly wasted youth.." And then that's the song that Cadence was listening to in the hospital. Like her subconscious was the Mirren hallucination yelling at her to remember. I loved that.
While I think a lot of clues could be taken two ways, I think the liars were actually ghosts. 1. When Mirren yells that she loves Cadence, she says it's what a "living breathing human being" would do 2. The liars look exactly the same as they did summer 15. If Cadence was hallucinating, I think she would have imagined them as looking older. 3. All the stuff about Cuddledown being haunted and other similar things. 4. Gat explains the plot of Wuthering Heights to Cadence because she's never read it. If she was hallucinating, she wouldn't be able to explain to herself the plot of a book she has never read. 5. Gat tells Cadence that her grandpa paid for the trip to Europe, not her dad. She realizes that makes way more sense. The trip happened summer 16, so she didn't forget any details of it. How could she have told herself a truth that she did not ever know? (I seriously doubt her father actually paid for her trip, all things considered). 6. When Cadence finds out the truth, the liars are still there. If they were hallucinations, they would have disappered right away.
Summer Young she couldn’t inagine them looking older though... she can just imagine/hallucinate what she SAW. And thr last time she saw them was summer 15...
why would she have imagined them as older? also, she knew about wuthering heights because that was a memory from summer 15. a lot of the things that she hallucinated were memories coming back from summer 15
Yes, I think you're right. The book also kept on mentioning that the liars were making or drinking this "pretentious tea" and when Mirren and Cady went to Edgartown, Mirren felt sick and she said something like "she had too much" which I think was the pretentious tea. "Pretentious tea" was mentioned a lot of times the second time I read the book. I do really think they were not hallucinations
The third point.. Cuddle town being haunted is the main reason why they could be spirits.. Other than that, none of the above points makes reasonable sense
why do I feel like Grandpa Sinclair calls Cadence Merrin knowingly, maybe he's trying to get her to remember, and sort of feel guilty for what happened. He has always been a power hungry bastard anyway.
Maybe the grandfather deals with the loss of Mirren by calling Cadence her name. I mean, Cadence is probably the one who resembles Mirren the most, given they were the same age and all. It could be a way for him to sort of keep Mirren alive. Also, Mirren was blonde wasn't she? Perhaps that's why the grandfather didn't like Cadence dying her hair black - not just because it wasn't a very "Sinclair thing" to do - but simply because she didn't resemble Mirren as much anymore.
Probably because she resolved the thing with not responding to the emails with Cady. That’s why she felt that she could leave, because everything was resolved
At the time, I thought she was actually pregnant, but when she revealed the truth about having sexual relations, i thought that something was reaaally of..
Late to the party, but just finished this book. She says she was sick and fading because she was having trouble coming to terms with being dead. She says she was/is still having trouble forgiving Cady for all the things she will never get to do.
I really want to believe that she actually interacted with the liars, but a part of me just can't really think that paranormal stuff would be connected with this story. I actually finished this book today, and believe me, my heart is aching because of how terribly sad the ending is. I think I might just let myself believe that they were there as "ghosts" or whatever, because if not it's gonna take weeks for me to get over this. The book was truly amazing, the only bad thing is that I get obsessed with books and movies so easily that I'll probably never get over this ending. If you'll excuse me, I'll just go watch a thousand other reviews on this book and relate to what everyone is feeling.
I think that the three were ghosts but I really don't think they interacted with anyone else. I think their sole purpose was to help Cadence figure out what happen and learn to accept it and forgive herself.
@@isabellalundvall7472 wouldn't they want to show themselves to their actual siblings and bond with them more since they only saw her during summers like once a yr and it was hinted they they all didnt really know each other as they could be anybody they want at beachwood island
I think the Liars were hallucinations and maybe Cadence could only see them at Beachwood because that's the only place she ever saw them when they were alive. Maybe she couldn't imagine them anywhere else.
but Cadence wasn't the only one to see them. Bonnie has developed an obsession over ghosts and we have subtle details that which indicates that she can see her sister Mirren. For example, when Cadence talked to Mirren abt the twins being kleptomaniac, Mirren says "I tried to talk w Bonnie". At least two times in the novel, a book that Bonnie reads during the summer is mentioned. This book is entitled something like "collective appearance" and the last time it's mentioned is js after Cadence remembered what really happened. Some other ppl seem to see the liars too like Taft when he says that Mirren read him a story to sleep or when Carrie says that she sees Johnny sometimes when she wanders in Beechwood
another hint I saw was at the end of part 45, where cadence said : 'here we'll stay young forever in a certain aspect.' which makes sense because the 3 of them died when they were young
I think the Liars were actually there because there was one point where she said she'd been sick for a couple of days and when she came back and asked them what they did, she wondered why they lied to her about where they'd been. If she was imagining them, would her own hallucinations lie to her? idk!
Yeah when I was reading the book, I never guessed than any of them was dead-even Gat. But I did think about the possibility that Cadence might be dead already... so the impact was pretty huge when I found out that it was the total opposite and just makes the whole story even more tragic...
@@lalhruaizelihlawndo4427 omg me too i'm so late!! Do you remember the part where Cady was having a bad migraine and went upstairs, and then someone was there in the hallway and then it was Mirren, then Cady asked why Mirren was in the dark and Mirren said she liked the dark? If you remember can you please tell me what the chapter is?? Thank you
Oh my goodness after reading this I literally sat there and went OH. You do have to appreciate all those little clues Emily Lockhart left behind and this video makes me want to reread the book as well and see all those moments. So many hidden clues! How could I have not known?
I also thought, at first I thought the two had had sex because she was wearing a bra and panties and the family caught them in the act and caused a huge mess, as I realized that the trauma of what happened was great, I remembered Casca de berserk and I came to to think that something similar had happened to her in the sense that Gat had abused her and this had caused a huge trauma that made her forget what happened
I have a theory that Cadence is mentally retarded person who lies everything and she just wanted to get the property sole in her hands by killing the 3 Like why would someone lit up the pathway where gat Jonny and mirren could escape?
I definitely think that the liars were all in her head, because they were never in the same place as the family, so no one else saw them as far as we know. Also, when the dishes in the sink pile up and Cuddletown turns into this giant mess I feel like its because she's not cleaning it.
But then gat was telling her the story of wuthering heights, a novel she never read. How come she could know the summary of book, it was gat’s spirit telling her so
@@monicakushwaha475 ive seen lots of other people say that it was a memory from summer 15 and she was reliving it and lots of the events from summer 17 were just memories from summer 15 told in a different way we see this with the mottos they use like be a little kinder and fight the evil, they use these quotes in summer 15 but when they have the discussion in summer 17 it’s told as if it’s the first time cadys heard the mottos also she could have read the book in summer 15 and not remembered
It's 5 am and I have just finished it. I think I'm still crying over this book. I would have never guessed the ending and I think it was good because it had such an impact on me. I literally thought that Gat had done something to her like raping her or something like that and that's why Mirren was scared of going out. I've never thought of the clues as clues, I just thought 'hey look, since whatever happened to her happened they kind of got more kind to each other'. It kind of reminded me of the family in The Girl with the Dragon tattoo, you know, the island and the mistery. So I was expecting a dark secret from one of them but definitely never expected the fire. I'm quite depressed. I think I'm going to bed and cry myself to sleep haha. I loved your reviews!
Taft believes (and says to Cadence) that there are gohst in the new house, so i think that when he says that Mirren read him a story, its because thats what he wants to belive. She was his sister and he doesn't want to belive shes gone, therefore he convinces himself that she is there as a ghost and she is reading him at goodnight story. Just as Cadence he is decieving him self. Great video!
+Horde1Blades I thought about that, and i Think its a posibility. I would however Like to believe that they are her imagianation, 'cause i Think that would make a better story.
After reading this and thinking hard about it... I've come to the conclusion that they were ghosts, but only Cady saw them. It's a mix of the two theories and it makes sense with all of the clues. Eeek I love this story
mirren was the grandfather's favourite. This was unkown to everyone until she was lost in the fire. He grieved for her more than he grieved for Johnny, whom he thought had the same character as he. It turns out it is Mirren who has the business brains of the grandfather. while Johnny tells his grandfather he doesn't mind starting all over without the Sinclair trust fund it is Mirren who has the high Mathematic grades to get into Harvard. Grandfather wanted children who could stand for themselves and be able to keep the Island and it seems it was only Mirren who showed hope of doing so.
something that got me thinking was when Cadence went to give Johnny the Legos she found but he wouldn't take them. he also said he's given the one's he had taken from Will back to him, and the night before Will had had a nightmare and yelled for Carrie, but she wouldn't answer. What I think happened was that Johnny appeared in Will's room with the Legos and Will noticed him and screamed for help, but the mother didn't pay attention because she knew it was just Johnny, or maybe she felt it.
At the end of chapter 33 Cady asks Aunt Carrie if Johnny was up last night, and Aunt Carrie says she doesn't know what Cadence is talking about. My first thought at the beginning of the "Truth" part was that it was all in her head, but I was confused because they seemed too real to be hallucinations sometimes.
I think they were definitely ghosts/in that in-between phase because of that time Cadence woke up and Gat was in her room reading her graph paper notes and things we wrote down above her bed! And she tells him to not and he's like "it's for the public to see" or something. So he can't really be in her head if he'd been reading it before she woke up.
another hint to me reading it the second time was the part where the liars were out on the water and they went to jump off the rock by when it was Candice turn they said its to dangerous so they could do it because they were dead but she couldn't. Also i believe that the 3 dead liars were their because Miriam got sick and then they had to leave because they were their for too long and they had to move on but to do that they had to make candice understand and they didn't have the energy to go out of cuddle wood but Miriam still did but then she got sick first. just a few theories of my own
i think that cady´s grandad called her mirren to see if she remembered the accident in some way, like he always made passive agressive comments to the aunties so he could be actually doing the same with cady to see if she reacts to the "key" word that´s obviously Mirren idk maybe im wrong but that´s how i see it
I feel like they are actually there, but they only appear as soon as Cady steps foot in cuddledown. When Cady remembers everything she asks the liars where they are going, they say, where we are when you're not here. When Cady walks in to Cuddledown one day, the liars pretend they are playing scrabble, but the pieces aren't out, Cady knows they are lying.
I finished this book today and I really loved it but had disliked the ending, but your discussion made me realize how brilliant everything was puzzled and now I think I'm starting to like the ending too. Great great video. Love from Brazil.
3dudes • Carone, Sgrig e Fogs im exactly like you! I finished the book today but didnt like it so much untill I saw this video and it made me realize how frikin beautiful this book was written
i believe they were ghosts because other family members have encountered them, like Johnnys mother when she walks around at night (and said that she sees johnny at this time), and the younger cousin when he is scared that the house is haunted and miren reads him a book.
I just remembered that when Cadence was always trying to find out why Gat didn't reach out to her after her accident it was because he was dead and she was mad at him and all the liars had to make excuses for him and Gat had to lie to her.
I needed this, because I was literally confused thee entire time. Granted I’m new to reading which I am actually loving, but I couldn’t relate to the hype that everyone spoke about this book. After watching this I do have a greater appreciation of the authors writing, but still give it a solid 3/5.
Thanks for all the hints I was trying to find them myself but you did it for me I was the same I never caught onto the 3 being dead i also thought that cadence was dead at the end and i also thought it would end in suicide I think we were ghosts but in the way that they couldn't do anything they could talk but they couldn't move things like I think she made the mess that the bottle falling off the roof was just a coincidence
This video explained so much! Thanks! I felt silly too after I finallyI picked up on all the clues. Some other clues hinting to their deaths were that she didn't know why Gat abandoned her after the accident (how he didn't write or call or anything), and she had no idea whatsoever to why he hadn't contacted her. Also, when she arrived on Beechwood for Summer 17, none of the Liars stood with the family to greet Cadence, they stood at a fence by themselves. :)
Also, the book kept on mentioning that the liars had this "pretentious tea" that they kept on drinking which makes me me think that they were not hallucinations and were actually there with the help of this "pretentious tea"
Another clue is when it was fourth of July and Cady asked the liars what they did. They replied with they went and go doughnuts. Cady knows Mirren hates that and she asks herself, “Why are they lying?”
there was one fairytale near the end and it was like the second one about the mouse and at the end it was like maybe one day hed go back and burn that fucking place to the ground and i just like did a double take. like i couldnt handle the relization
Bruh I'm so mad at myself for guessing the ending. Now I'm jealous of people who were totally blown away by the ending Coz they didn't see it coming. They got the complete feel of the book
SAMEE and i appreciate ppl for tellin me that this is a good book so that ill read it but i kinda didnt want to know that its a good book bc when i was readin i was expectin a twist
I also thought it was so sad about the packages the aunts would have gotten! It just, like you said, gave me chills. - and I forgot about the phone call. I remember the "Are you a drug addict?" and thought it was because maybe Mirren had been a drug addict and that was why she was acting so weird. I gotta read this book again. I'm fascinated now with the idea that maybe the ghosts of the kids are interacting with the other people.... wow. I also thought the parallel between what Grandpa built and how Cady was giving away her stuff was deep.
M starting to realize how good the writing is even tho I hated it when reading but when u pointed out all the hints it hit me so hard that ididnt knw I was crying cuz every conv and gesture makes SO much sense
Do you remember what chapter it was when Mirren was in the dark hallways when Cady saw her and asked why is she in the dark and then Mirren said that she liked the dark
Clearly the title "We Were Liars" came to be because the story talks about the Liars, Gat, Cadence, Johnny and Mirren. And the reason why its WERE is because they are the Liars but 3 died and 1 remains. They cant be the Liars when 3 of them are dead...
Another thing that just struck me Mirren in summer 17 listened to the song Cady did when she was in the hospital This means way too much in way too many theories
I kind of saw the big reveal coming, but only in the last 30 pages or so. For the rest of the book I thought someone tried to kill her because she was going to inherit everything. I think it was all in Cadence's mind, and that Carrie was just overcome by grief and denial during the night. Cadence probably rolled the lemonade off the roof and collected the beach roses and rocks and everything else that they did, and in her head it was the Liars that did it, not her. I don't know, maybe it's just cause I can't seem to connect paranormality with this novel..
Im usually extremely good in seeing things coming but this ..... owww this one *bows down to Mrs Lockhart* Dont worry Sophia u werent the only one who missed this
Spoilerly: I think it was all in her mind. All of it; which then makes this the most amazing book ever. My favourite part in retrospect was when they/she ride(s) the boat to those cliffs and jumps. I mean, she was there all by herself! Wow. Just wow. It was just mind blowing tragic awesomeness. It was all the power of her brain dealing with a guilt so intense it couldn't accept what had actually happened. I loved this book, it's perfect. I cried so much. * also I think her aunt (all of the aunts and especially the grandfather) was going a little insane as well and that she might have indulged in cadence's fantasy while sleep-walking and that's why she asked about Johnny. I don't know. That's just what I think.
I’m so shocked right now like whaaaat ???? Im reading all the comment and Im still wondering: HOW lmao. Do you guys know some similar books ? Bc now idk what to do in my life 💀
@@shreyaparekh9150 Hi! Do you remember the part where Cady had a bad migraine and she went upstairs and then someone was in the hallways and it was Mirren and then Cady asked why Mirren was in the dark and then Mirren said that she liked the dark? Do you know what chapter it is?
Also when Cady kissed Gat, that confused me. And all those clues she mentioned, I didn't understand the context of it when I read it for the first time. After watching this, this book really gives me chills. But omg, this is my favorite book ever. And also the first book I've ever cried over.
I believe the thing with Cuddledown is it was a total mess so it could represent how the "presence" of the Liars were messing with her heart through guilt and discomfort. That's why the house was discribed as a complete disgusting place and how Penny didn't let Cadence have meals *alone*, she couldn't be with the Liars only because they were dead, but also because they were a burden that she would have to carry for the rest of her life.
I really think the Liars were real because they once played tenis and Cady's mom came and said that she heard the sound of tenis being played , as you may or may not know you can't play tenis alone
I think that the liars were ghosts. This is because Taft was afraid of the houses being haunted. Also in the end when they go away and say their final goodbyes after the help Cady remember, hallucinations wouldn’t just go away after all that. Lastly her drugs run out near the middle/end, so that couldn’t be hallucination because she wasn’t taking them as much anymore. I also find it sad that mirren says no one will ever love her and she never had a boyfriend because she never had a long enough life too. Overall though, I think the book was well written and amazing. But the ending broke me. Although it comforts me to know they love each other in the end.
i suppose he lost cadence in a way and i think he might of felt some way about gats death (seeing as he was so closely linked to the family )despite being a racist bastard
Why is no one talking about the last line of the book: I suffer migraines. I don't not suffer fools. I endure. What does that mean!!!!?? God I desperately hope Cady didn't kill them intentionally god no please
I though that the meaning of "suffer" could be "have", because she still has migraines, but don't have fools, because they died. A lot of times the liars call each other fool. And she endure, because she some way can now not suffer that much.
@@rebecacabral6963 Do you remember the part where Cady had a bad Migraine and she went upstairs and then Mirren was there in the hallway and Cady asked her why she's in the dark and then Mirren said she liked the dark?? Do you remember the chapter?
I have been wondering this exact same thing!! The only thing I can come up with is that they're wondering what will happen to them? like reading about heaven or something
i thought it was because they were looking for a word gat had made in scrabble - they were seeing if the word was real..? i guess cadence subconscious imagined them as normal, pre-dead, playing scrabble
Daniela Molina OMG this makes sense to me! All the clues and what some people are saying here is making me like the book much more than when I finished it.
okok another big huge giagantic clue guys.on pg 119 candence talks about her ashes being thrown on the tiny island next to the big island their on.and later on she jumps off that cliff and sais how theres no many rocks and she finds a place with no rocks.maybe she killed herself while jumping so she could be with the liars because her subconscious mind put the pieces together.thats also why the book name we were liars is in plural aka the 4 liars including cadence and past tense also including her.
I Just Finished The Book & Had never Expected This Plot Twist, Up until Now, I Was thinking that the liars Were With Cadence In the summer 17th too But reading the Last chapter "TRUTH" I can't Hold My tears Back I mean, How Can This Book Have Such A heart Rendering plot twist😭😭😭😭😭I'm Broken
for me, yes, they were ghosts and they were actually there. i think that gat did give her the roses and they did live in cuddledown. the mess in cuddledown isn't just noticed by Cadence but by her mom and aunt. in regards to whether they engaged with taft and carrie, no, i dont think so. the reason why they stayed on that island waiting for cady was to give her closure since she didnt know what happened (also, she wouldve prob had a panic attack if she got to the island and they werent there). with the aunts though, they knew what happened and were mourning. appearing to the aunts would make it worse for them and not let them grieve.
I’m thinking Cadence acted out the scenes. Remember when she says Johnny was flicking food on the wall. Then later on, Mummy tells Cady how the house is a mess and Ginny can’t be expected to clean it. I think Cady was impersonating each of them and their actions, like a multiple personality disorder.
also mirren lied about having a boyfriend because she always wanted to experience that, but she never will , and she does say something like “I’ll never get married” or “no one will love me like that” cause she is dead so she can’t have any of that anymore she won’t have the chance, and right after that cadences mom calls her to help with dinner but she calls only her and not mirren
The most plot twist book I ever read was The Girl on The Train by Paula Hawkins. Really shocked by the ending and it still gives me chills when I remember it now
on chapter 44, i want to know why mirren started gagging. some said she might be pregnant, i dont know. and on chapter 84, johnny told cady that mirren got it the worst and the two were feeling it to. what is it that they got?
Shena Mae Macababbad this is really late so sorry about that but to me it felt like Mirren was gagging almost as if she was choking on smoke. And I think maybe as Cadence got more and more of her memory back the hallucinations got weaker, explaining why they stopped going places and why they were getting “sick”
also when she asks what they did when she wasn’t around they lied, because they probably didn’t do anything at all since she wasn’t there, same thing when they pretented they where playing scrabble, and I think those lies show that they were ghosts and not hallucinations, also the thing about them getting tired and sick only makes sense if they’re ghosts
There was another hint when gat touched Cady's cheek and said he's so glad that he saw her again and that he had another chance because she didn't come the summer before. I kind of think that they're actually there, I mean if they were hallucinations why would Gat be worried about not seeing her before it's too late? Why would Mirren get sick all the time for staying on the island for too long after the accident if she's just a hallucination. I don't know THIS BOOK MAN X(
I just finished reading this and I had a thought that what if the medicine she was taking made her hallucinate so that’s why she could see Mirren, Gat, and Johnny??
i believe they were really there because 1. they show up after she already knows...Were they images caused by her subconcious they would vanish as soon as she knew the truth and were they caused by medication her hallucinations would not be so limited and so specific/focused. Also one of the twins reading about multiple apparitions or w/e they were called somehow conviced me that this was the author telling us it was really them. I dunno it just makes more sense to me that way than the opposite
It's been a while since I've read the book so my memory isn't great but for me a big clue was when they were jumping off a cliff or something but when cadence wanted to do it they said it was too dangerous yet they were doing it.
SOILERS AHEAD To me Cadence knew deep down inside her that they were dead. You know that scène where they were climbing up the rocks, when Cady was following Johnny and Gat and Mirren was behind her begging her not to jump? Pretty sure Cady was trying to commit suicide to "join" Johnny and Gat who are dead because of the guilt and not being able to accept What happened. When the plot twist was revealed I didn't only see it as Cady finally remembering but more so her finally coming to terms with What happened in that goodbye scène with the Liars. Part of her knew that they were dead all along but mainly she didn't want to accept What happened this Is why she kept "seeing" dead people.
It makes sense why the mother kept telling her that she had to spend time with her younger cousins and eat dinner with the family INSTEAD OF ON HER OWN :((((((
Ella Carmichael much sad
NOW THAT YOU MENTION IT, IT'S SO MUCH WORSE IT'S SO SAD :(((((
Omggg yesss
Yeah coz she was all alone & hallucinating or either with the spirits of the liars.
It's also Rights after that cliff bit, that she talks about alternate realities...
yea, you missed that cadence always describes gats lips and fingers to be cold, unless shes describing him in memories of summer 15.

No, i made notes and there are particular scenes in summer 17 when Gat is described as warm
The title is a clue; we were liars is a plural past-tense
I also remember the part were they were on the roof and Cadence is talking about what her funeral would be like and the liars are uncomfortable.
ooohhhh nooo, she was talking about where to scatter her ashes, when they are all ashes... and she talks about who would go to their funerals, and what they would be like, but she missed all their funerals
When i read that part, i thought their uncomfortable bc of Cadence's condition omgg

Maybe the broken bottles and glass were when Cadence passed liars lemon-aide and of course no one was there to actually grab them so they broke.

Meaning his ashes are already here. i definitely didn't guess the ending! Another clue I saw was the song that Mirren won't stop listening to in that one scene, the "we are perfectly wasted youth.."
And then that's the song that Cadence was listening to in the hospital. Like her subconscious was the Mirren hallucination yelling at her to remember. I loved that.
While I think a lot of clues could be taken two ways, I think the liars were actually ghosts.
1. When Mirren yells that she loves Cadence, she says it's what a "living breathing human being" would do
Absolute slaying interpretation imo
why do I feel like Grandpa Sinclair calls Cadence Merrin knowingly, maybe he's trying to get her to remember, and sort of feel guilty for what happened.
Omg I didn't notice
I wonder why Mirren got sick and started "fading" before Gat and Johnny.
TheCrazyTeddybears Same....I was so sad when I finished the book:(
I think that the three were ghosts but I really don't think they interacted with anyone else. I think their sole purpose was to help Cadence figure out what happen and learn to accept it and forgive herself.
Britney Foster Yeah or maybe the three chose to just show themself to Cady since she was closest to them if you know what I mean...
OMG STOP
but Cadence wasn't the only one to see them.
It all seems so obvious now! I want to know what her mom thought she was doing when Cadence said she was hanging out with the liars summer 17.
Her mom might have thought that she was either hallucinating, or just going insane from the drugs perscribed.
Oh my God me tooo!!! Ik im a light-years away late byt i just finished the book and I'm completely hung up on it. I thought it was a suicide book
I could not predict the ending. I thought Gat had raped Cadence or something.
Same! Or that because Cadence was the heir someone tried to kill her....
I have a theory that
Cadence is mentally retarded person who lies everything and she just wanted to get the property sole in her hands by killing the 3
Like why would someone lit up the pathway where gat Jonny and mirren could escape?
Maybe they're all a little crazy, I mean Carrie was Johnny's mum after all, she could miss him so much that she started to see him too.
The purple rocks could be from one of the littles (they all blur for me 😂) was collecting and gave to Cady. It was at the very end.
I went into it not knowing ANYTHING!!! Finished it in less then 6 hours!!! Thank you so much for making it a lot clearer! I'm not as confused now!!!
It can be a beautiful or really (even more) tragic story depending on what you think they are, ghost or hallucinations.
+Hilda Taagaard Hansen or they are really ghost. I feel it could go either way
+Horde1Blades I thought about that, and i Think its a posibility. I would however Like to believe that they are her imagianation, 'cause i Think that would make a better story.
i think it's sad enough already, the spirits of her friends comforting her makes it bittersweet. which i like better ^^
+Horde1Blades i dont Like the spiritual twist very much, but after rereading it, i do find it most likely that they are ghost -.-
The whole summer was a process of healing. Cadence still “see” the liars perhaps she needs it to heal.
After reading this and thinking hard about it... I've come to the conclusion that they were ghosts, but only Cady saw them. It's a mix of the two theories and it makes sense with all of the clues. Eeek I love this story
Maddie Anica Yes I think so too, it makes sense that way to me:)
mirren was the grandfather's favourite.
So he can't really be in her head if he'd been reading it before she woke up.
yea but what if she hallucinated that hewas there before?
another hint to me reading it the second time was the part where the liars were out on the water and they went to jump off the rock by when it was Candice turn they said its to dangerous so they could do it because they were dead but she couldn't.
I finished the book today but didnt like it so much untill I saw this video and it made me realize how frikin beautiful this book was written
that's exactly how I felt too!!! and I'm from Brazil as well !! coincidence?
i believe they were ghosts because other family members have encountered them, like Johnnys mother when she walks around at night (and said that she sees johnny at this time), and the younger cousin when he is scared that the house is haunted and miren reads him a book.
I thought Johnny’s mom was sleepwalking
I just remembered that when Cadence was always trying to find out why Gat didn't reach out to her after her accident it was because he was dead and she was mad at him and all the liars had to make excuses for him and Gat had to lie to her.
I literally got chills as you said "let it give you chills"
I didn't guess the ending either, this video is eye-opening! Im just frustrated that I didn't click on!
I needed this, because I was literally confused thee entire time. Granted I’m new to reading which I am actually loving, but I couldn’t relate to the hype that everyone spoke about this book. After watching this I do have a greater appreciation of the authors writing, but still give it a solid 3/5.
they don’t need sunscreen now.. because… they can’t get burnt…… OH MY GOD IM SUCH AN IDIOTTT HOWD I MISS THIS
Thanks for all the hints I was trying to find them myself but you did it for me I was the same I never caught onto the 3 being dead i also thought that cadence was dead at the end and i also thought it would end in suicide I think we were ghosts but in the way that they couldn't do anything they could talk but they couldn't move things like I think she made the mess that the bottle falling off the roof was just a coincidence
I thought the "truth" ending was a lie (hence "we were liars")...I was hoping it was untrue.....
Another clue is when it was fourth of July and Cady asked the liars what they did. They replied with they went and go doughnuts. Cady knows Mirren hates that and she asks herself, “Why are they lying?”
This video was just everything. HOW DID I NOT SEE IT? My thing is, I thought that maybe she was dead, I'm not sure why, but I felt like she was dead.
there was one fairytale near the end and it was like the second one about the mouse and at the end it was like maybe one day hed go back and burn that fucking place to the ground and i just like did a double take. like i couldnt handle the relization
I was thinking how the only time they ate away from the roof was when there were fire works - I don't know but it's fire 😂
What about when mirren says to gat and also to cad that is not a good idea their relationship because both of them will get hurt
You keep saying 3 grandchildren but Gat wasn't related to them and he actually never liked Gat
u r right but...
3 flowers. 3 for forgivenes..
maybe somewhere he did care about gat dying.
When mirren went with cady out on the boat... no wonder why she was all of a sudden sick
Clearly the title "We Were Liars" came to be because the story talks about the Liars, Gat, Cadence, Johnny and Mirren. And the reason why its WERE is because they are the Liars but 3 died and 1 remains. They cant be the Liars when 3 of them are dead...
The Title of this book in Brazil is "Liars" (but in Portuguese) so for people who read it in Portuguese, the title doesn't make any difference.
Another thing that just struck me
Mirren in summer 17 listened to the song Cady did when she was in the hospital
This means way too much in way too many theories
I kind of saw the big reveal coming, but only in the last 30 pages or so. For the rest of the book I thought someone tried to kill her because she was going to inherit everything. I think it was all in Cadence's mind, and that Carrie was just overcome by grief and denial during the night. Cadence probably rolled the lemonade off the roof and collected the beach roses and rocks and everything else that they did, and in her head it was the Liars that did it, not her. I don't know, maybe it's just cause I can't seem to connect paranormality with this novel..
Im usually extremely good in seeing things coming but this ..... owww this one *bows down to Mrs Lockhart* Dont worry Sophia u werent the only one who missed this
Spoilerly:
I think it was all in her mind.
Also! Her mother kept telling her to spend time with the littles, 'cause she was by herself...
I love the book even more after watching this and I need to re-read it. Like now. Great video!

@@lamorins I am sorry I don't remember actually.
Also when Cady kissed Gat, that confused me. And all those clues she mentioned, I didn't understand the context of it when I read it for the first time. After watching this, this book really gives me chills. But omg, this is my favorite book ever. And also the first book I've ever cried over.
Zoe Same I cried sooo much...
Me too,
Technically it is possible to lay tennis alone tho, either against a machine or a wall
THIS VIDEO WAS AMAZING and so eye-opening. thank you so much for sharing! x
That scrabble word reference was too soon . . . too soon
Although it comforts me to know they love each other in the end.
you say that he lost three grandchildren, but he didn't. he lost two. remember he didn't even like Gat.
i suppose he lost cadence in a way and i think he might of felt some way about gats death (seeing as he was so closely linked to the family )despite being a racist bastard
Ok im definitely gonna reread this now. As in right now. Now.
Yess
“Not even a scrabble word to describe that” credit where credit is due ms. Basement, very clever
the thing i don't understand was why were the liars around the bible with cady walked in? was that when they were 'coming back'?
I have been wondering this exact same thing!! The only thing I can come up with is that they're wondering what will happen to them? like reading about heaven or something
i thought it was because they were looking for a word gat had made in scrabble - they were seeing if the word was real..? i guess cadence subconscious imagined them as normal, pre-dead, playing scrabble
Oh my gosh I just got the chills and this comment makes me reevaluate if they are just hallucinations or not...
Thanks for pointing out all the clues I missed. I didn’t feel like reading the book again
I Just Finished The Book & Had never Expected This Plot Twist,
Up until Now, I Was thinking that the liars Were With Cadence In the summer 17th too
But reading the Last chapter "TRUTH" I can't Hold My tears Back
I mean, How Can This Book Have Such A heart Rendering plot twist😭😭😭😭😭I'm Broken
I had no clue about the ending either, this video was just eye opening! I'm just frustrated that I didn't click on!
for me, yes, they were ghosts and they were actually there. i think that gat did give her the roses and they did live in cuddledown. the mess in cuddledown isn't just noticed by Cadence but by her mom and aunt. in regards to whether they engaged with taft and carrie, no, i dont think so. the reason why they stayed on that island waiting for cady was to give her closure since she didnt know what happened (also, she wouldve prob had a panic attack if she got to the island and they werent there). with the aunts though, they knew what happened and were mourning. appearing to the aunts would make it worse for them and not let them grieve.
I dunno it just makes more sense to me that way than the opposite
the purple rocks were from The Littles.
It's been a while since I've read the book so my memory isn't great but for me a big clue was when they were jumping off a cliff or something but when cadence wanted to do it they said it was too dangerous yet they were doing it.
I love how deeply you've thought about this book and how you've presented the review
Not sure why but I'm getting chills now.
SOILERS AHEAD
To me Cadence knew deep down inside her that they were dead.
This was so good, there were so many hints and I totally didn't guess it! xD
Amazing video..I've read this book quite a few time ago and it was beautiful diving again into the story with you
