Awesome, thank much for sharing this. Just incase someone's privacy setting does not allow tmutil to execute command. they need to allow that terminal full access. tmutil: setdestination requires Full Disk Access privileges. To allow this operation, select Full Disk Access in the Privacy tab of the Security & Privacy preference pane, and add Terminal to the list of applications which are allowed Full Disk Access.
Thanks! Good tutorial, straight to the point. One thing - unless you're testing a setting, there's never any need to click "apply" before "ok" - somehow many years ago needlessly hitting "apply" was taught as the way to do it, but it's simply an extra and most often unnecessary step.
Thank You! This is what I needed! Info for MacOS Sonoma. You need to allow Terminal Full Disk Access in Preferences -> Security and Privacy to run this command. The Drive will be inserted by itself. You can run you Backup then,
Omg! 'thank you so much for making this video to you my friend. You have just made my Mac/Windows networking life much more integrated. Forever grateful.
I think I'm right in saying that if you use the -a switch in your sudo tmutil setdestination command, you can *add* the new destination to the existing one (rather than replace it) if that is useful.
@@QwerticPlayz just got a quick question for you. I created the sparse image, but I unmounted the network drive. I mounted the network drive again but don't see the Sparse drive anymore. Any idea on how to get it back? I didn't make Sparse my TM drive yet.
I found out that the moment time machine recognizes the sparse file (with the terminal command ofc), the connection stays! However before that the things get kind of weird and inconsistent. Mounting the drive thru smb protocol should enable you to use tm. This is about all I remember however, I haven’t really kept up with it.
PS. Since than I have started using dedicated Ubuntu live servers for backup purposes. I find them superior for this use but the entry level is of course higher. (and it takes a little more time to set up)
@@QwerticPlayz I managed to fix it by deleting the sparsebundle and making a new one. I do plan to move away from this method once I get a server I can run all the time. For now, while I'm gaming on my pc, and my Mac is plugged in to power I want it to back up to the extra drive on the PC (I hope Power nap back up works over network, but I will test that out tomorrow)
Great tutorial. I followed the step and i did set up Time Machine in my windows shared folder. Question: I want to change/move the location in my windows system Ex: e:/folder1 Copy folder1 and paste in New location F:/folder2 How to tell mac os to use the new location ? Coz my drive is almost full. Bought a new drive and added to my windows system.
Great, great, tutorial!!! Works 100%!! And if I need to restore a machine, just is needed to reinstall the OS, then follow this tutorial and restore the data, right? because I believe that is not possible to do it from the restore mac menu? after booting to restore. THANKS!!
I advise you to give it a try, I believe you should be able to connect the drive thru terminal but this will include some google searching. Never a bad idea to test the setup so you don't have to find this out when you do have an issue!
Hi, This is a great tutorial, and thank you for creating it. I do have one question If my MacBook fails and I want to pull from the sparse to recover from the Windows server how can I see this sparse disk on the local network, Is this even possible? Thank you for your time
Yes this should totally be possible because the files are accessible via smb! You could always try the situation out and check if it would work, without the losing data part ;).
Hey great video! Does the windows drive need to be formatted in order for this to work? Is it possible to set up time machine to backup using a Network Shared Folder without needing to format a drive on the windows machine.. or is that not possible?
Hey bro. I did the same , but the back up speed is slow. Maybe you how to resolve this. And also sometimes while I back up mac disconnects from “server” by itself.
The backupspeed is changes but it is normal for a backup of 100Gb+ to take a day or two, after that only small changes will be backed up so this will happen very fast. You could try and connect gigabit ethernet cable for this first backup.

Thank you so much for this - exactly what I wanted to do and oddly not many resources to describe this. Great job and it's already working with me 👏

Super thankful for your video! It's exactly what I was looking for and you explained it really well!
Thank you very much for the compliment, I’m very glad that I was able to help!

This worked! Thank you so much for sharing. 🎉
So having everything connected TM keeps giving me a timed out error. So I'm not what's going on. It keeps giving me a permission error.
2024 topical !!! 😀Спасибо
Super bedankt! En een mooi tijdstip om een filmpje te maken haha!
Absolutely love it man!! This vid has been a life saver.

Thanks a lot!!!!
Great job!
still works thanks
great video bro!
Thank you, it works fine for me! Is it possible to crytograph time machine backups by following this method?

Strange method involving the "image". Why ?
It is a long time ago that I made this video. What is it about the video specifically that you find strange? Kind regards, and thx for watching!

The random disconnects are weird I have not had that issue. But will look into it!
Qwertic Thanks a lot. Yes I am backing up all system since I bought a new ssd and never backed up before.
