    Congratulations on reaching 1 million followers. I am one of them! LOL. My husband and I lived our first 3 yeas of marriage in a 8’ wide, 40’ long mobile home. It worked quite well while he was in college. So, we can easil envision living on a narrow boat. I am not so sure I could do it now as I have a very large home with all the things I dreamt of having: a sewing craft room, a music room with both grand piano and organ, a big kitchen for cooking in. A yard for gardening. These are things I love to do and when retired could enjoy doing them full time. I. It is an easy care home and yard. I am not so sure we could handle all of those locks at our stage of life now. But, the idea of cruising and the the many beautiful canals, stopping to dine at a pub, etc. certainly looks fabulous. So, I enjoy keeping my iPad with me and watching and going along with you is great fun. I live in the Rocky Mountains with my 81 yr old husband, our younger daughter, her husband and their two teens 15 and 13. We are very busy with friends and family, and we do travel. Spent 3 weeks in Norway last April. I have been to the UK 4 times, my husband has only landed several times at Heathrow (not my favorite airport) on our way to Norway. I do want to return, with him, and visit the canals. I only learned about that extensive system in the last 3 years. Now, I definitely want to visit the canals and stay at the Inns along the way……and look some of you up to say hi in person.

    Another person comments about the USA canal and river system which is extensive but given the geography of the country, is all based on the Eastern side - draw a vertical line in the middle and everything is to the right of that line. I would suggest a bit of reading for your friends too. Terry Darlington who wrote the three Narrow Dog to... series. The second book is Narrow Dog to Indian River where they travel from Norfolk, Virginia to the Gulf of Mexico.

    There is a cruising path in the eastern United States/Canada called the "Great Loop" that covers the area of Florida that your friends mentioned. It covers the Intracoastal Waterway on both the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts along either the inside of the barrier islands or inshore canals. From there it goes to New York city and up the Hudson River to the Erie Canal ending between Buffalo, NY and Niagara Falls. That's where some people are turned-off from completing the loop though. The next part is to either take the Welland Canal, Trent-Severn Canal, and some bays through Canada, or cross Lakes Erie and Huron. Those two options then rejoin to cross under the Mackinac Bridge and cross Lake Michigan to Chicago. From there it's a canal to the Illinois River and down the Mississippi River to New Orleans.

    How is it that you put out a video 4 DAYS AGO and it just now popped up in my feed?!? Sorry I was/am late! The video was just as good as if I saw it fresh (I think so, anyway). There wasn’t a stale part of it.
    You have American friends!?? What an amazing thing! They seem nice enough at first glance. You HAVE known them awhile, yes? You don’t want to let random Americans in and around your home. Things can get scary at a moment’s notice.
    For all of you Americans out there, I am also an American, born and bred and my lineage goes back on this continent well over 60,000 years. The above comment is 100% tongue in cheek and there is nothing to get worked up over. It’s a bit of a poke at the mostly young American haters out there who really don’t understand what it is that they hate. B.R.E.A.T.H.E.
    Great video! Will you over-winter at a marina again, this winter? If you got a lot of snow, I don’t know if I would want to stay in. But you don’t see that much snow in the UK, do you? If you did, I would take my cross country skis with me and enjoy a glide into the market occasionally but stay out where you can hear the ice and trees sing when it is really quiet. But, you don’t see much snow so that little memory/fantasy was pointless. As you don’t (get much snow accumulation), I think wintering in a marina in London is the PERFECT way to enjoy the season! I am jealous. Sorry.
    I plan to spend the next couple of years wondering around North America in a skoolie, taking the younger/youngest grandchild/grandchildren out on wild adventures. The middle of 3 is 15 and sometimes he wants to come but most times he wants to hang around with friends. He will want to return to DC & NYC but otherwise he wants to stay close to his mates. At 15, it is time he learned his way around airports and he can join us on the more urban adventures. Then return to his friends. After those few years are up, I hope to have all my papers in a row and will hop on a boat or a plane to Southampton or London and moor my own narrowboat in a London marina, if that is what I choose to do. How exciting is that?!? Was going to leave straight away but MY boy and his boys had a bit of a panic about such a rapid departure and since the youngest and I have so much fun together, it will be no hardship to stay close for a bit longer. This summer, I taught them how to find, understand and use the Metro. Plus other things as well. Do you care? Me either. Just typing out loud.
    We enjoyed Argy Bargy this summer! The youngest (9) read the instructions as soon as he arrived and said he knew how to play. We were interrupted by someone and put it aside for about a week. Then we came back to it and he insisted he knew how to play and was ready TO GO!!! Granny needed a few minutes to understand and away we went. He was overly enthusiastic about the opportunity to sabotage his Granny’s plans but I got him instead a few times. However, at the end of the game, he didn’t just beat me. He cleaned the board at my expense. He certainly DID understand the game! We took the game with us to DC with the intention to get a shot playing at the feet of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial. The Park Service staff members patrolling did NOT share my vision of how great the shot would be and made us pack it up. But I think Argy Bargy should make several stops around iconic North American landmarks. What do you think? Any requests? I am going to give the Lincoln Memorial another go, but it will be a late night shot and if the lighting is inadequate, I will hang an LED lantern on Lincoln’s knuckle (if one of us can reach it). I have to get that shot!!!

    There are canals in the USA, much bigger ones, and people do live and cruise in boats on them -again much bigger ones. There's the 3,000 miles of the Intracoastal Waterway, with canals linking natural rivers and bays together. The Illinois Waterway is similar, but only 300 miles. However, that's still a lot longer than the Grand Union or the Leeds & Liverpool canals. I doubt the USA has anything like the Huddersfield narrow or the Standedge Tunnel, though! Aaand... though not part of the English network, does the USA have anything like the engineering bizzarity of the Falkirk Wheel?

    • @umbertoyltp
      @umbertoyltp 2 года назад +1

      And Anderton Boatlift. Thank you for your input about the USA!

    • @MartinJames389
      @MartinJames389 2 года назад +1

      @@umbertoyltp Yes, but the Anderton Boat Lift is straightforward and sensible. It does what it says on the tin. The Falkirk Wheel is brilliant engineering but ... umm ... a bit nuts. Pictures and vids never quite do justice to the huge scale of it, made more dramatic by the shape of the land. If you come at it on foot from the Union Canal, you turn a bend, and see the view before you. That thing is going to get boats from way down there up HERE? On the other hand, if you're at the bottom, the sheer size of it is breathtaking. And it requires only negligible power to operate.
      The huge flight of locks which used to be there (though derelict even then, I think) was the final waymark and fuel check for the middle group of German bombers which blitzed Clydebank in 1941. They were beyond their theoretical range and got that far West only with extra fuel tanks. If their fuel was too low at the very visible lock flight, they were to turn on it, straighten on the heading for home and drop the lot on Falkirk as a secondary target. The Northern and Southern routes didn't have such significant secondary targets, and aircraft turning back through insufficient fuel simply unloaded over open country.
