    I think that labeling your shadow parts, especially whether you're dealing with a form or cast shadow, is a really great exercise. Beautiful demo drawing!

    May God bless you. You made me to turn back to drawing. I stopped to draw for these reasons, I didn't have the time and patience to draw. I thought the drawing is senceless and that I may draw I must have the talent - the innate possibility and ability to draw. I understand and understood that the main part of learning how to draw is observation of a object like a cube, glass, mug, apple, sphere.

    Awesome demo and thoroughly enjoyed. I think as an artist I understand tones but sometimes I'm not sure what everything is called and how to label it in a way that is informative to how to approach my work. After watching this I think I'll put in the extra effort when I can to identify in my work What each shadow is to the objects or person involved as sometimes mid way through painting especially I start getting confused about what kind of "dark" mass this should be. And then you find yourself altering until its right. Sometimes you totally miss the reflective light or have too many "true dark" areas when as shown you can get away with very small amounts of true dark areas by identifying the occlusion shadow... a drawing and painting can be so much more when it is carefully observed and performed masterfully with these "simple" practices.
    When you spoke about edges.. this is also a really cool illusion of the oh-so-wonderful "lost and found" edges. And it works terrifically in painting and in drawing. It is an absolute fave for me.
    Ps... I instantly started singing "thrift shop" by Macklemore in my head once I saw your jacket lol

    Thank you so much for this content! It is very informative. Can you do a video on understanding values/ value drawing exercises?

    • @CarolinPeters
      @CarolinPeters 3 года назад +1

      Value is a many headed-hydra. I have my students set up 3 simple objects. One white, one grey and the other one black, shine a direct light source on them and draw that set-up. By drawing them side by side you get to investigate what is shadow, and what is local value (the inherent pigment/color of something). Totally worth a deep dive. Good luck! :)

    I've learnt so much from your videos. Your stuff on nose placement was a game changer for me. I used to try and shortcut them all the time but now I love drawing in all the structure. I do have a really unrelated question - I cheered when I saw you in a Chewjitsu shirt and I saw a grappling dummy in one of your clips. As an older one strip white belt in BJJ looking to get in some home practice outside of class, would you recommend getting a grappling dummy?

    I'm really struggling with shading/shadow plus making a 3D look on a big fluffy cloud. I'm also trying to do the same with drawing a smoke plume. It's very frustrating. Could you do a cloud tutorial?
