This was very helpful, especially the comment about leaving a gap round the stems when mulching.

Why should leave a gap around the stems when mulching?

If it’s manure you are using it has uric acid in it which can scorch the plant stems if it comes into contact with them. Hope this helps. 👍😁

I tried asking my Mum for advice when it came to growing roses as my grandparents used to enter competitions regularly 🙁
Mum: "I'm not sure, there's a lot to know!"
*Me after watching this 2 minute video* 😩

Roses are quite hardy and tough plants. Some people become obsessed with their bloom performance, but the real secret to a grand display is to give them excellent soil and time to mature in that soil. A 20-30 year old rose will outperform younger plants, even if younger plants have been given obsessively perfect care.

Hi, please can you help me in am getting the ground ready to plant roses, but I need to put food in the ground. what is the best farmyard manure compost from the garden centres or well rotted horse manure. Please can you help me. If it helps, I live in Bristol uk. Thank you very much.

I am 11 months too late, but rabbit manure is by far the best! You can use it right away as there's no scorching the plant.
I would say second, is horse manure.
They digest their seeds, as cows do not, and you will have grass seedlings.
