Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elijah" is a towering masterpiece in the choral repertoire, and within it, the chorus "Be Not Afraid" stands out as a moment of profound comfort and reassurance.
Composed in 1846, "Elijah" retells the biblical story of the prophet Elijah, focusing on his trials, triumphs, and ultimately his ascension to heaven.
The text, drawn from the Book of Kings, assures Elijah that he is not alone, that God is with him even in the darkest moments. This message of courage and faith is underscored by Mendelssohn's masterful use of harmony and melody, which imbue the music with a sense of transcendent beauty and hope.
