  • Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elijah" is a towering masterpiece in the choral repertoire, and within it, the chorus "Be Not Afraid" stands out as a moment of profound comfort and reassurance.
Composed in 1846, "Elijah" retells the biblical story of the prophet Elijah, focusing on his trials, triumphs, and ultimately his ascension to heaven.
The text, drawn from the Book of Kings, assures Elijah that he is not alone, that God is with him even in the darkest moments. This message of courage and faith is underscored by Mendelssohn's masterful use of harmony and melody, which imbue the music with a sense of transcendent beauty and hope.
"Be Not Afraid" encapsulates Mendelssohn's ability to combine spiritual depth with exquisite musical craftsmanship. Through its sublime melodies and profound message of hope, it continues to resonate with audiences as a timeless expression of faith and resilience in the face of adversity.
Performed at a festive concert on the occasion of the visit of Chief Apostle Jean-Luc Schneider at Silvertown Auditorium on Saturday, March 15, 2014.
Composed by Felix Mendelssohn (Elijah)Choir & Orchestra of the New Apostolic Church Southern Africa Conducted by Clyde Davids
