Catching Sea Trout with Float and Ultralight Lure Setup - Shore Fishing UK Scotland

- Shore Fishing For Beginners. This was a short Morning shore fishing session, fishing with the bombarda float. I was targeting bass with the bombarda float with ultra light lures. Instead of catching bass I did manage to catch sea trout and Mackerel instead.
In the video I demonstrate how I use the bombarda float and how the float is setup. You will see in the video how effective the bombarda really is at catching sea trout even though this was not my target species.

@@PiscatorUK-Fishing I live down on the gulf coast of Florida now and want to give these floats a go on the flats for sea trout, snook, reds and tarpon. We used to fish terror lures over there for seatrout with in line leads. This method seems a great way to fish flies at range. It's mostly jig heads and soft plastics out here
That’s awesome that my videos are even being viewed so far and wide, Florida such an amazing place. I had the pleasure of visiting a couple of times when I was in the Navy, I remember what you call sea trout having very sharp teeth at the front and tasted beautiful. Bombarda will work a treat if you can’t reach them with the fly rod
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing thats right, also known as speckled trout. Two big fangs up front. I brought most of my uk gear over here although the methods are just as different as the ecosystem. I thought fishing here would be easy but far from it. I have my 7 weight daiwa whisker (made in scotland) and vintage hardy perfect which I've been neglecting. I need to get back to the fluff chucking. If you get the urge to make a video over here look me up !.

@@wildfisher very much appreciated you too mate👍
nice to see Rhu narrows again 8)
Always wanted to kayak fish estuaries for seatrout and bass looks a great spot Dougie.
This particular spot is probably best fished from the shore as the fish can be in shallow water close to the shore line.
Good looking trout!
Another good one matey- I do like the bombarda though I rarely fish it theses days. I should dust a few off for my next trip away. Tight lines pal 👍
Cheers mate, tight lines on your next trip👍
Put another flie on your leader, most of the time, the fish will hook the smaller top flie. Use Hard Mono 0,40 mm for the top flie.
Thanks for the tips, I’ll certainly give it a try. Thanks again for watching👍
Great fishing young man

I was fishing mackreol it was brilliant
Even I am just a beginner
I don't know much about fishing
So I am learning from you😃
@@taheralzeer1 that’s brilliant, mackerel are good fun on a light setup and for a beginner they are certainly good fun to catch no matter what you use. Glad to have helped you in some way👍🎣
Blimey, I'm 5 foot and bugger all! A 9 foot leader and that little net? I would never land a fish! 😂
Shads n plugs work great for bass
The green and white lure is a clouser minnow. I tie them with a loop of nylon in the tail which stops the tails tangling.
Cheers Paul, I’ll try that the next time I use them much appreciated mate
Try the estuary at Langbank down to port glasgow for the bass you won’t be disappointed.this is a fantastic channel 👍

@@PiscatorUK-Fishing is this rhu narrows
Very good viewing.
Thanks Anthony much appreciated and many thanks for watching
Hi Dougie, Many thanks for another excellent video. Does the Bombarda actually float.
Most people no them as the bombarda float but there is 3 types, (fast sinking all clear the one I was using) intermediate which has a weight in it opaque in colour and floating also opaque in colour.
Is this Rhu? I was out there Saturday for flood in the afternoon. Couple of mackies is all I got.
If your unsure about how do i stop at the right time, tie on the bombarda without your trace, whack out a few casts to fresh the line lie on your reel, then next cast wind in a few turns place some electrical tape/masking tape over the line just a 1/2 inch to inch tab not some massive wind of tape its justt to indicate a point ,then wind in. now tie on your leader then cast as the line reaches short of your max range youll see the tape and know to check your cast and help turn over the leader length, till your used to using it then you'll get the feel for checking and turning over a leader and fly from a fixed spool reel and you can stop using the tape check.
That’s a great tip, thanks for the feedback and many thanks for watching👍🎣👊
Great video! Do you prefer the sinking, slow sinking or floating Bombarda for your coastline fishing? Or all three for different conditions? Thanks.
I prefer the sinking bombarda the most, I don’t use the intermediate but the floating bombarda is excellent for a slow retrieve and you want the lure close to the surface, it’s also good for really shallow water.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Thank you!

Cheers for the info always appreciated on this channel mate👍
very informative video, how much and the best place to get the floats and flask holding tackle bag please.
Hi Chris, I usually get the bombarda from Amazon, I put a link in the description on the video. I also got the bag on Amazon but I don’t have a link it was only about £10
Another Great Vid!! Started using this just around the other side past Kilcreggan, was able to get a few nice Sea trout and a small Schoalie, just out of curiosity, have you heard of bass being caught on bait around these parts?
Regards
Mike
Hi Michael, I had a couple last year just schoolies but yes had a few reports this year although not on bait, fly and lures a 5lb bass caught at Rhu and another 4-5lb at Cardross as well as a few other’s
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Well Done mate, I feel as the summer progresses it’s feels a bit harder to target the Bass and Sea trout as I just end up getting plagued with mackerel 🤣 Oh well suppose it’s not a bad thing! Fills the bait drawer in my freezer, but keep up the great informative videos!! Always ecstatic when I find one your vids based along the peninsula 🤙🏻
Really appreciate you watching. We’re almost neighbours, I’m just across the water in the Burg. If the mackerel are about then so will the bass that’s only my opinion tho
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing yep! Totally agree, may have to put a bait rod out with a live Joey, while using my Lrf set up for sport, 😃
Brilliant video, what size hook do you use, many thanks for sharing
A size 6 or 4 mate, thanks for watching
Would the Bombarda method work for other species? I don't really want to target sea trout. I like lure fishing, but I'm finding it difficult to find deep water marks, so the Bombarda float seems like a good way to get that additional distance and hopefully land in deeper water.
For sure it will work for other species, Bass, and pollock. You can get away with a red gill lure on the end.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing thanks. Have you done a video on the set-up? What rod to use etc etc. I like the idea of Bombarda "float" fishing.
@@Inoscopedadog Not yet but I think it will be a good idea because I’m getting a few questions about it, hopefully get one out soon👍
Where was this? I see so many of your videos are close to me and I’m new to sea fishing so really appreciate the videos. Casting a small lure over into deeper water makes a lot of sense! I’m yet to catch on a lure on the sea ☹️ (carp I could catch all day!)
@@napieraerialphotography6785 many thanks this was in the Gareloch close to Helensburgh
Is there any difference in performance catching trout if one was using a white bombarda as opposed to the a translucent one?
Personally I prefer the translucent bombardas as the white ones are usually floating or intermediate. I can make the translucent bombardas come to the surface just by working it a bit faster during the retrieve so I don’t use the white ones. I can’t really comment on which one has a better catching performance.
Has anyone told u that u look a bit like Steven gerrard. Was wondering why you were stopping the cast just before it hit the water well explained at the end. 👍👍
Cheers Barrie, yes one or twice and my wife didn’t believe me, now I have it in writing. Thanks for watching👍
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing I'm from Scotland is there a reason that Scotland has more sea trout than England.
I’m not a 100% sure but it’s probably the same reason there’s a greater population of salmon, It’s colder, less pollution, consistent rain during the spawning period, less urban and rural development at the moment and everyone’s favourite climate change. It could be one or all of these reasons but to be honest I’m still not sure, maybe someone will comment. Good question though
Looks more like his cousin Anthony Gerrard
Hi great videos. Where do you get your saltwater flies from or do you tie your own .
Cheers Karl, Most of them are made by Fulling mill and the shrimp patterns were off eBay.
Hey douglas brilliant video as always mate , what rod would u recommend for sea trout fishing bombarda set up ?? The reason I ask mine is 10ft but think it may be too stiff ?? Many thanks Ed
Hi Ed, the rod you have sounds ok mate, nothing wrong with a stiff rod but if it feels heavy to you then maybe go for something a bit lighter. I started using a 10ft steelhead iconic by Ron Thomson, DAM do them too but for some reason the 10ft is hard to get hold of. A rod I would like to try is the Abu Garcia Orra which is available in 10 and 11ft but never used it, just looks like it will do the job and don’t know how it will feel in terms of weight. To be honest Ed, I don’t like recommending gear if I’ve never used it. Many thanks Douglas
Top man , thanks m8
Brilliant video what size bombarder are using I’ve just bought 2 at 25g and I’m causing pretty big splash and causing a wake on the retrieve which I’m guessing will put them off any advise please tight lines
Hi Dave, the 25gram is what I use. The bombarda being close or on the surface is common. Usually caused by to fast a retrieve or jerking to fast. Try a slower retrieve and working it slower. You can also try retrieve and pause by stopping the retrieve the bombarda will sink a few feet again. If there’s a bit of chop on the water I haven’t had an issue catching fish when there’s a wake behind the bombarda. Same with the splash of the float on the water, I usually cast well beyond the fish, which are usually closer in the shallower water. When the float hits the clip try and use the action of the rod to absorb the the impact. A big splash could be caused by the float falling from a higher higher, maybe try a lower trajectory cast. Hope the helps mate, tight lines. Just one question on rigging the float, is the tail of the float at the leader swivel or the bulb? Ie when you’re retrieving the float does it come in tail first?
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing thanks my Bombarda are floating which probably not helping with my speed I’ll keep trying I’m determined to catch on the fly this year I’m right down in Cornwall but plenty of marks for those Bass and mullet
@@DaveSmith-dw8fq ahh, that explains the wake. You’ll still catch on the floating and intermediate bombarda but I would prefer to use them when there’s a good ripple on the water.
What would be the shortest leader you could get away with with a bombarda? Don't you find 9ft a bit impractical for casting and landing fish..?
Thanks for commenting. A long leader with a long rod is fine, I don’t try to cast a long way and the leader is shorter than the rod so no real issues with landing a fish. I’ve had fish with 6-7ft leaders. The longer leader is just what I like to use. I will try and do a video soon using different leader lengths.
Is this rhu narrows?
Any Bass there? That water is screaming for a small surface lure. This is the first video of yours I have watched; great job! :)
Thanks for the comment and for watching, I need to get a variety of bass lures to give me options. Just thought I would try this technique as Bass have been caught on the fly in and around this location.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Which Bass lures do you have at the moment? Perhaps I can help.
Hi John I’ve got no surface lures, savage gear 3D sandeel, shallow diver 1-2ft, savage gear 3D sandeel line through. A couple of line through seekers. Got one cheep diving lure, dives to 10ft approx. I caught a bass with it on my latest video at Luce Bay. That’s it really
Hi your videos are brilliant you mention the roo narrows how is it spelt and what is the nearest town?
Rhu, Helensburgh
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing thankyou
Were you fishing from ?
What pound braided line you got in there?
I actually had 29lb daiwa jbraid 8strand
Hi, I wonder if you could clarify, your set up from braid to fluorocarbon, I guess you are casting this through the guides? because you mention its 2 1/2 ft to the swivel, then your trace 9ft. I have a 8'8ft rod so the I am interested if you use a FG knot to enable the knot to flow through the guides easily, or are you stopping joining knot before it hits the guides. The videos are very informative, thanks for the content. 🐟
Hi Graham no problem mate and thanks for watching and commenting. Yes I use the FG knot, I think it’s one of the best braid to fluoro/mono knots. My rubbing leader to the bombarda does go though my guides, probably the top 4. You hardly hear or feel it during the cast. The only time you know it’s there is when you wind it in. Hope this helps buddy👍
Thank you for your reply, all makes sense.👍🏻

Cheers mate, yes it will work, I’ve used it with traditional loch flies and damsels

Great fishing where do you fish are you west coast or east coast based Scotland?
Hi mate, I’m based on the west and fish all over

What strength braid do you use please and what weight bombardier might give this a try.
Hi Michael, I use 29lb Jbraid 8 strand, it may seem heavy but it’s very fine.and 20grm bombarda
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing many thanks.
Perhaps I might ask another question in the video you said braid to 15 lbs fluoropolymer what knot do use to braid only I have never tried this before.regards Michael
@@michaelhocking9037 no problem, I use 29lb J braid 8 strand, it might sound a bit heavy but it’s very fine diameter. 20lb braid would probably do. I use approx 2-3 feet of 13lb fluoro, I use the FG knot to join braid to leader. I think I demonstrated it on my shock leader video. But there are many great tutorials on RUclips. So this section is just to give protection to the braid during casting. Feed the fluoro through bombarda and a small rubber bead and tie onto a small swivel. Then attach your leader, it doesn’t need to be fluoro, I just like it for its abrasion resistance.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing many thanks.
What time of year starts to be productive for bass/seatrout?
Hi Ewan, from March to June for sea trout has been more productive for me but can still be good in the summer months until autumn. Bass more productive in the wormer months when there’s more bait fish about through to early autumn.
Hello Piscator
question about fishing with the bombarda what is +- the casting weight of the rod
for example can you also use a federrod to fish with the bombarda
the advantage of the federrod is that you ussually have a few tips with it so you can exchange more
for more or less hardness in the top
i would like to receive your response greetings Willem
Hi Willem, yes you can use a feeder rod, I would recommend using a stiff tip. I have just started using the Shakespeare Omni class feeder rod 11ft for the bombarda. It has a casting weight 15-60 gram and I use the 2oz tip. As the feeder rod is purposely build for fresh water, I would recommend whashing it in fresh water after using in the sea or estuaries otherwise the rod guides will corrode quickly. Thanks for your questions very much appreciated.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing thank you for your response
yes i whas off all my rods i do every time also my beach rods i making she dry and one,s in a time i spray them in with silicone spray it make,s the lifetime longer for your rods
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing What about using match rod :pellet or wagler one? isn't it be lighter and same time good enough to take the fish.
Absolutely a match rod would probably be my preferred rod. If I get another rod for the bombarda or metal lures I would choose a match rod.
Hi, whats the best weight of bombarder to use
Hi Julz, I like and prefer the 20gram bombarda especially for casting
Does the bombarda work if there's a chop on the water
Yes works well, I actually prefer it
You keep calling your fly a lure. It’s definitely a fly, it’s a clouser minnow. I’ve caught everything from pike to perch to trout on those bad boys👍
It's a fly, but it's still a lure 😅
Bro what would u say using a 50 g bombardo float pls
You can use any size your comfortable with, mate. I just prefer the 20-25gram, it’s enough to cast a long way and not too big for casting short. You’ll still catch fish with 50gram bombarda
Do you ever hook up mullet with these flies? Have you targeted them at all?
Hi mate, I’ve never caught a mullet yet. I’ve heard that this method can be productive for mullet using small shrimp pattern flies.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing that's what I've been thinking, can't see why not. People catch them on ordinary fly gear. This seems ideal for me, as due to my health I'm not up to a long stretch of waving a fly rod about any more. Cheers, great channel liked and subbed.
@@greenjack1959l very much appreciated buddy and tight lines
is the bombarda a sinking or floating one you use ?
Hi Joseph, I use the sinking bombarda, when you work it fast it tends to come up to the surface anyway. I don’t bother with the floating one as I prefer the clear one

What length and size hook on these lures please? I’m trying ti replicate your set up 😊
I use two sizes, #4 and #6. I’ve been using Osprey Saltwater strong standard shank hooks, very reasonably priced for the quality. Been using the for clousers. I use Gamakatsu Saltwater #4 and #6 SL11-3H for the sand eel pattern, bit pricey but excellent quality. Hope this helps buddy

Hi very interesting how deep is the water you are fishing.
Will definitely try this, how do you stop the float?
Simon Bournemouth
Hi mate, the water is only about 8 feet at it’s deepest point. Do you mean stop it during the cast?
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing no how do you fix it to the line swivel below to trace and a float stop above?
Hi mate, I don’t use a float stop because it’s not fished like a conventional float, the bombarda I use sinks, do only use the bombarda for casting ultra light lures/flies and I don’t ever fish it static I.e I start retrieving it once it has sank a bit. The set up is braid to 24inch 13lb Fluoro, braid to leader knot is the FG knot. Line through the bombarda onto swivel, I use the double Davy knot for fluoro or mono under 15lb . Then fluoro whatever length your comfortable casting as long as you can manage tied onto the lure, usually use a non-slip loop knot.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing ok clear now cant wait to try

It’s across the water from Rosneath, I’ve had the lures for several years but they are made by Fulling Mill I think they were half and half baitfish and I got them in a set of four, blue/white, brown/white, green/white and red/white

Handling and throwing back the Mackeral will painfully kill them ultimately. keep, or dont fish for

No problem Ronald, I would fish it the same way maybe with two small streamer type flies one on the tail and a short dropper maybe about 2-3ft apart👍
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Thanks
In terms of stopping you're bombarda why not just clip up like the carp boys do?
I think if i was on a stretch of water that had a particular feature or flow I wanted to consistently cast to then I probably would clip the line. I usually vary my casting distance a lot hence I don’t clip the line. it’s worth trying tho👍
Do these bomarda float
I only use the all clear sinking bombarda.
fishing for sea trout on the coast/sea lochs do you need fishing rights for them?
Most estuaries do have fishing rights for migratory fish. For Open coast line fishing, the information on who owns the right is harder to find and may need researching. For the Clyde estuary most of the fishing right are controlled by Loch Lomond Angling Improvements Association.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing I thought so I head to Oban again in two weeks. The last time I went was in September 2021 and the lochs were full of some nice sea trout. But finding who has the rights is impossible to find. The only info I got was just tell anyone you’re fishing for pollock but I’d rather fish legal.
@slopestyleuk maybe try and ask some tackle shops up that way, they may be able to point you in the right direction. Tight lines mate🎣💪🏻
Why on earth did you give the location out , it will be busier than Blackpool every week now
Its heaving with mackeral bashers all the time. It's LLAIA permitted water fir seatrout so anyone fishing fir silver tourists without a permit is doing so wrongly. I went down this week with a mate and caught over 50 mackeral on the fly sometimes x2 at a time using the fly rod. Good fun on the fly even if not the target species.
I was up at rhu today and had a cast and a hot beef tea off the gas stove. Whole thing was spoiled by a woman with two out of control dogs off the lead- through my gear etc. I'd seen them approach and shouted to take care as I had hooks line etc. The got right to me and then she asked what I had like sharp stuff etc. I told her that's what I'd been telling her. I'm not against folk exercising dogs etc but if they won't obey you get them on a bloody lead. Another single dog did the same so I gave up. If they'd just be responsible we could all share the place! A fiver in fish bait wasted for selfish clowns
Thanks for the update Fraser, I’ve not had any issues at Rhu before but have had issues on other beaches. Dogs eating my bait and peeing on my gear, so I do know where your coming from and yes it can sometimes spoil a day out, especially when the dog eats most of your bait. What was your tactics for fishing there?
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing I was trying out a new 12 ft rod using a float and mackerel strips but I didn't really get enough time to have a good go. I think I will wait until the end of April and go early in the morning to avoid the dogs.
