After using a 4x5 flip helmet, then an optrel panoramaxx 2.5, I've found that my favorite set up is a $20 2x4 front flip hood with a nice glass lens. You can swap or modify the springs on those hoods so they close with a nod. With the front flip being molded into the hood, it weighs next to nothing, and the clear lenses are dirt cheap. I never wanted to change the clear lenses on my optrel because they're like $10 a piece and hard to find without ordering them special, so I was stick welding with a dirty, scratched up lens and couldn't see shit anyways. When you use a 2x4, you can swap lenses without thinking twice, and you can see again. If you really want an auto lens, there's plenty of options out there that fit the same hood, so if you need a variable or something, you can do that, but you still do not need to spend a fortune. The only thing I'd really recommend spending the money for an optrel is if you're tigging with a foot pedal and you really want the shade to change with your amperage. Otherwise, it's not that beneficial. Not to mention that the outer lens can pop off in your bag without you noticing, and then you burn weld spatter into a $400+ lens. Plus, if you need to swap into a pancake hood or something set up to work with a hard hat, you can use the same lenses. It's much cheaper, lighter, and more practical to go that way and when you go with nice glass vs an lcd screen, you can see much more clearly.
The gold filter helps reflect light back onto your surface and also helps reflect the heat some as well...😉

I was given an auto darkening helmet and it took some getting use to.
I think they call it welders nod. LOL
Took a bit to stop nodding before striking and arc with the auto darkening shield.
But the auto darkening helmet worked great in confined places like an old steel house boat hull.
My problem is my safety glasses always fog up under the welding hood so I wind up only putting them on when chipping and taking them off to weld.
Question for you or anyone on here, what part of welding damages your eyes is it the light the heat or the uv?

A very helpful video. Miller advertises "x-mode" an extra feature for welding outside. Any idea if it is as beneficial as they claim? I am going to be welding outside.
Xmode works very well. Its the only way to weld outside, without problems.
