It was traditionally made from lac dye and fermented Betel leaves but as that process was lost during indentureship, the substitute of that red dye became red nail polish. The purpose of Aalta is just like mehendi or henna. A way of decorating the hands and feet. If you look closely, he is also wearing kajar or eyeliner. Another decoration the groom must have. Within Hinduism, not only women, men too wore many ornaments.
