    As a Zambian, the whole Delia Owens situation makes me sick to my stomach! The whole thing reeks of white American entitlement, thinking that they can go wherever they want and do whatever they please. Murdering people?? Leaving their bodies in the bush?! Absolutely disgusting! No matter how you feel about poaching, what possesses someone to think they're above the law of a country that's not even theirs. Where are their morals? Zambia is not just a wildlife conservation, its a country with a rich culture, history and diverse people. Maybe they need to sort out the extreme hunting/captivity problem the US still has before they start parading around on some white saviour nonsense 😤

    the most frustrating thing RE: Terry Pratchet is that Neil Gaiman is still incredibly vocal on how great he was and how much he misses his friend (they wrote Good Omens together!! and in my edition of the book, there’s some author questions at the back and they talk about how they became friends and how they were both massive fans of each other’s works). Neil is regularly on tumblr answering questions about the two of them. If he (and his own DAUGHTER) say Terry wasn’t transphobic, I’m inclined to believe them over some randos on twitter

      Monstrous Regiment legit has canon trans characters and it's so beautiful and celebrated and normalized.
      I don't understand how anyone could read that fantastic book and come away with anything other than the impression that he was very open-minded regarding gender and sexuality.

  • @JessTalkingBooks
    @JessTalkingBooks 3 года назад +94

    My husband loves Terry Pratchett and I've read a few books of his. The fact the TERFs lack reading comprehension is astounding. He spent a lot of time circumventing society expectations and being quite critical of boxing in gender norms.
    And the Scholastic news is going to be interesting since it seems like the new runner has a vested interest in the company. She's done a lot of jobs over the past 30 years. More than the sons, if I recall correctly. She expressed wanting to keep the publisher independent, too. Never a bad thing.

    Re: the ARCs: The person complaining kind of changed the issue halfway through. It went from "Should POC reviewers be prioritized for ARCs by POC authors" in the text exchange, but in the question box it basically became, "Should white authors not be allowed to review books by POC authors, and should POC reviewers not be allowed to review books by white authors," a ridiculous premise that absolutely no one has suggested. It's equating "why don't I get a free book?" to "why are you preventing me from reviewing a book?" Like, white reviewers can review whatever they want; in certain situations though, they'll just have to buy it (or get it from the library if possible) like the rest of the reading public. ARCs are a gift, not a privilege.

My friend finished the book, but it definitely made her uncomfortable… we were both pretty creeped out. Poaching won’t be eradicated by killing the poachers, it’s the merchants and the buyers of ivory or whatever, sitting in their fancy offices and houses, who should be held responsible. Ugh. Talk about the legacy of colonialism - no, actually the colonialism is still alive and well.

    My wife (who is trans) thinks that Owlcrate’s decision to sell the mugs in the first place and to donate part of the profits was fine. She also thinks that the apology was more than enough. She loves HP and this has been a struggle for her to decide the way she will appreciate this series moving forward and I’m basically just following what she is comfortable with. We work to not purchase anything that would financially benefit JKR but still enjoys the books and movies.

      Universal Studios literally has 2 lands (1 in each of their FL parks) devoted to Harry Potter. These lands are by Far the most busy sections in their parks. Trust me they have No plans to make Any changes where they're concerned. JKR could live quite nicely with what she made from that deal alone. Nevermind, the original book deals, movie deals and merchandising. If the woman never sold another thing in her life she still has enough 💰 to fill a Scrooge McDuck style Vault and take a 🏊. Personally, I don't care either way as I found the books to be mediocre at best. Ditto for the couple movies I saw. (I know there are more of them-I don't care. I had too many Marvel movies to watch 😂) I'm also a Disney girl so I generally don't care much for Universal IP and don't generally go there. My point is she doesn't care if you're not buying her mugs or whatever from this little Owl Crate girl. (It sounded like it was licensed products anyway so JKR would still be getting a small percentage of the 💰 -because that's how licensing agreements work unless it was a "knock off or fake" that is.) It sounds like Owl Crate purchased "X amount" of HP items so JKR already got her cut. Trust me she does not care if the cup is in your kitchen cupboards or an Owl Crate Warehouse. I know everyone these days wants to be a "social justice warrior " or "part of the morality police" or whatever, but when you're dealing with an author who has Already hit it so big it's really a zero sum game for "protestors ". But I mean if you want to keep your 19.95 or whatever it was, by All means keep it. It's your money. Spend it or don't how you want. I just think people should be a little more realistic. Trust me with all the wands, robes, and other wizard paraphernalia I saw flying off the shelves the last time I was at Universal, JKR is Not missing the 19.95 mug purchase. Welcome to America where capitalism is king and most rich people suck.

    • @PinkCatsy
      @PinkCatsy 3 года назад +9

      @@TheGoofy1932 Okay? Thanks? But I know that JKR is rich and will always be rich because that's how it works when you become as wealthy as she is.
      But if you continue to financially support / promote JKR than you need to be okay with the fact that people will feel some type of way about your support for trans people. That's literally all I was saying, but thanks for the irrelevant essay.

    • @TheGoofy1932
      @TheGoofy1932 3 года назад +1

      @@PinkCatsy Most people who buy HP merchandise though aren't really thinking about what JKR thinks of Transpeople. They're thinking I really want that wizard wand. As I said, I'm a Disney girl at heart and have No HP merchandise, but not because JKR doesn't support the trans community. It's because I don't like HP. If Disney suddenly decided they were going to no longer have Pride Day at the parks I'm still going to spend my money there and go to their parks and buy their merchandise because I like the stuff they sell. Nor do I care what people think about my purchases. It's My money so I'll spend it how I want. I think most people feel this way. Are there a few "social justice warrior types" who will boycott JKR or whomever they don't like this week, sure. And there always will be. But most of us don't purchase fandom type merchandise and worry or really even care about the political or social stances surrounding those items. That's what I was trying to say-that the handful of people who won't buy for that reason are insignificant, in terms of the bottom line.

    • @PinkCatsy
      @PinkCatsy 3 года назад +5

      @@TheGoofy1932 To be honest with you, I don't care. I don't care who you support and I don't care why you support them.
      All I'm saying is that if you choose to buy or sell something that can, whether you like it or not, say something about you as a person. And you have to accept that. If you don't care what people think then good for you. It doesn't change what I said.
      The fact that you don't care or worry about the political or social stances surrounding them doesn't change the fact that other people do and other people may even judge you for your obliviousness / apathy. That's a choice you made and that's a choice that can have consequences, such as making some people distrust you. If you don't care about that then you don't care about that. I'm not trying to make you care about that. I don't care if you care about that honestly.

    It's bizarre how under the radar the whole Delia Owens saga was this whole time. I had heard about it from a wildlife biology channel, but even then it was really hard to understand from what I was able to find, so I'm really impressed with your research and explanation, Jess!
    If I remember correctly, the motive for murder in the novel was that the marsh girl was raped by the town's pretty white boy, so it's not exactly beat for beat, BUT that obviously doesn't alleviate anything Owens did in her real life. Definitely reeks of southern white supremacy/ white saviorism.

    Ooooh Sholastic drama is juicy af. Scholastic book fairs and the subscription booklet they gave us in school was always such a special treat when my parents could afford it. Hope it all works out!

    I am dying with the giraffes. I have stuffed animals from childhood that I still love and are hidden away so my pooch doesn’t destroy them. All her toys are stuffed animals too, so she assumes mine are hers. NOPE!

    I'm here for the puppy struggle! BTW, Shaun's RUclips (he just goes by Shaun, I know) has a brilliant takedown of the Terry Pratchett debate. He points out the entire premise of one of Pratchett's book is about gender identity and accepting people pronouns. The transphobes are always stretching.

    Wow. I read that Delia Owens book a couple years back, and I mostly liked it, but kind of hated the ending. Spoiler: my hating the ending is a bit appropriate in retrospect now that I know the rest of this story. I will have to share these articles with my mom because we read it together and holy shit. Ughh, peak colonialism even down to the obsession with “nature” over humans, like we aren’t fucking part of nature or something 🙄

    Honestly it makes sense to me that if an author belongs to an underrepresented group that you would send out arcs to those who identify. Like they’re not just sending out free books they’re sending out books to readers to read and promote, but ALSO to make sure that things like…geez I don’t know: *representation* have been done correctly and worded right.
    I just don’t understand how she 1) didn’t understand that and 2) thought that the publisher would agree to give her an ARC if she blasted them on social media like that.

    "YES, BITCH, YOU GET PRIORITY FOR EVERYTHING!" just slayed me. it's true, though. like, the sheer entitlement. i'm white and it's like, jfc your world will not end if you don't get an ARC copy of this book. you've probably gotten SEVERAL copies of ARCs that BIPOC reviewers didn't or wouldn't have gotten. just sit down and have a juice box or something, you big baby.

    I know I'm so late to party on this vid but I wanted to give feedback because I love the format/editing so much. I watch a lot of academic lectures and this vid 100% feels like one! Really fun, super informative, and your personality and candor really shines through. Idk if you'll read this but I wanted to recco something another youtuber does, Nisipisa. She screen records and then will bring up the preview of her webcam when she wants her face in the video. And it looks so cool when she does it, the preview looks like a frame, really fun. But then she doesn't have to edit a video in to a video, the webcam preview is in the screen recording. Brilliant, amazing, yall tubers are incredible. Love the new format, love watching you shout at Nigel, thank you for all your hard work, you're a joy

    Conservation is such a complicated topic because it's not just a one stroke solution like so many people seem to think. You have to work with the people living in a place that you are trying to do conservation work, as well as with the environment to come up with a plan that is detailed to what the people and the area needs. These Owens people don't sound like they were doing that. While bringing attention can help in cases if the powerful people don't care, the better way to try to go about it is going to the government and trying to work out solutions that can protect the wild animals as well as the cattle, which the people and the country depended on at the time (or still depend on? I don't know that much about Botswana's economy & exports today).
    Like, you can't go to an island where the peoples main diet and work is seafood and say "stop fishing, cuz conservation", because then they lose their primary way to make a living and force them to pay a ton of money, that they now don't have because they don't have work, for what will probably be mostly imported foods. You have to work with them in supporting them, as well as looking at and trying to solve local and global issues with fisheries. This same example of fisheries even applies to certain regions of the US, so you can't even just go by country, you have to go by region and environment and the locals living in that region.

    I love your last comment because it's 100% true. Social media burnout is real and many times, it's not good for you. The algorithms are against you on ALL social media platforms.
    I help my local community in many ways and that's where you should start if you can't afford to donate money. Instead, donate your time and your compassion in small ways, then build up to bigger projects. I know at times you might feel like you're not doing enough (I've felt that many times), but small, successful steps are way more important than giant leaps that can lead to harm down the road. Everyone can make a difference.
