Thanks for the nostalgic vid! FYI, Zacard was on ReX before joining SK, not WeRRa.
I had a chance to meet him in Summer 2004 at SKELTON's pc cafe in Seoul, which I frequented for a few weeks. As an Orc player, I knew the name Zacard from replays, but at the pc cafe, I got a glimpse of the world beater he would become. He, no joke, spent the entire day in his chair, only leaving to use the toilet or to heat a cup of ramen, which he ate at the same chair. He often napped, with his neck dumped to one side, in that chair. Otherwise, he was grinding 24/7, and yes, using mass wind riders :). That level of dedication taught me that no matter how good I thought I was, that I was still many levels behind who I thought was simply an above-average Korean Orc at the time.
Two months later, he would represent South Korea at the grand finals of the World Cyber Games, competing for a chance at the $25,000 grand prize. But for all that time he spent training in that chair, he still ended up losing 1-2 to a Dutch player known as "Grubby".
epic story
was "ReX" really a team name, tho? I've always considered it as just a random prefix that he put in front of his name.
@@kurzackd It was probably more of a clan than a pro team but there were other ReX players, like EvenStar and Romeo (who later joined mouz). Zacard allegedly played on behalf of Romeo during Incup and both were banned for a time
@@saintsintoseaaaah yes, of course !!
ReX.EvenStar, ReX.Romeo, and also... ReX.SCORPIO...
Of couse, I remember now !! Yes, it *WAS* an actual team, rather than just 3 random letters at the beginning of the name !! :P
.
@@saintsintosea I love these good old stories ... I'd buy a book about it...
Healing potion was used at 15:39 and I believe it won him the game. SH works better with wyverns. You can hex one hero and kill the other.
Hex is not good against elf, as he has Abolish magic. Plus mana burn.
TC is better here, for the aura, which helps against the NE's natural high speeds and slowing mechanisms available.
Dammit I should’ve destroyed it or traveled there
How do you may fix or balance wind riders without making Op in your opinion? 🫥
Wind riders remind me of mutalisks, one mistake and you fall so far behind you lose
Yeah gotta transition into 5 base ultralisk crackling 3/3 with defilers
any chance of mass mountain giants?
I remember that ther was also a proplayer called "CaSiN" which was actually playing wyverns on EVERY game in every matchup.
He just didnt make mass wyvs all the time, but he always started with wyverns and then adapt the game to the response (in many cases he play very well with strategic lame styles - bat riders, riders, reinforced towers etc.)
I always thought getting a single flyimg unit to harasswisps is very effective. So if you get a single one the enemy is forces to get an ancient protector or hypos to protect their wisps non stop
You are SO talented at this game, that I try to learn the game and practice even though I'm like 30 apm max. You inspire me to play man even though I'm horrible. Thanks!
Enemy kept sending solitary hippograph riders...I'm like damn it, save them up and then send them. he ended flanking you with another group in the end. Big brain move.
I remember Zacard. Good old times. Grubby you should have added more bats as he countered with more and more hippos. And you should have picked up the healig pot. The enemy did pretty good though. Your harasses were a little late and you didnt kill too many wisps. I remember his games. The enemies were so low on wood they werent able to counter him as they had not enough wood.
My childhood friend used to always use mass wind riders with tc to defeat us. But the most embarrassing part was he would build only 1 tower before wind riders. I guess his "psychological" defence worked really well.
I remember times when I watched replays with some commentary of some guy ("Unpause now") that I saw competetive games of Grubby employing wind riders. Times have changed.
I don't blame you for abandoning this strat since I think Slow Poison was what made it shine so much back in the day. It made kiting way more possible.
(My memory is definitely NOT as good as yours though so if I'm remembering wrong that's on me lol)
Just a thought. You always say that wave is for damage dealing and stomp is for damage mitigation. Maybe stomp would have been better since you already have a big glass cannon, and slowing down that demon hunter damage could have been a difference in that big 74 pop fight. Like, he would need to keep in mind all the time that if you ever have enough mana, you could bring 2,5 volleys to him.
Grubby tell us more stories of those days, good old 4K days, your legend team mates, Zeus, Fury,...
This is basically how I used to play lmao.I was just building whatever I felt that looked badass in mass and hoped for the best.I was wondering why sometimes I was getting squashed by like 4-5 units lol.
Man, these type of videos giving me back my motivation to play as ORC. Please, upload more videos vs 1900-2000 mmr players, where you can thrive and show your micro. Also your logical thinking, decision making and explaining the things are great!
My English is not good, thank you!
big mistake was not to make grades imo. Griffins for alliance are good not only because they are healthier and basically can get stuffed, but they also gain defence from upgrades, pala aura and scroll of protection (and heal ofc)
I think Grubby should still continue playing the game. He can still definitely turn it around and it would have been amazing!!! Don’t readily quit Mr. Grubby!!! I believe in you!
Also there was not so much successfull herokills meaning that DH soon gets meta anyways
Amazing how much trouble even a single Hippogryph can make for a group of 3 or 4 Wind Riders. Maybe should have kept making some Bats to counter them (bonus: they do decent Siege damage against both buildings and Dryads).
you did a good build up with 80 population but giving him the big heal potion was a big swing in that fight
i remember Humanic player making mass wywerns and towers all the time. He was level 60 on a ladder with this strat long long time ago
I used to copy his build. Compared to all the other orcs I had NO problems vs elf (unless they randomed into it). BM+NAGA mass rider or rider into wyverns and bats. It was great!
When i was a kid, everytime i played orc i was going mass wyverns and i was picking farseer because he had nice wolves on ability 😂
As a UD, mass wind riders is literally nightmare fuel
Very good video to demonstrate how even for the grubster wind riders not right
Chance was given but yet none is taken. GG!
Grubby vs Zacard BlizzCon 2005 on TM is one of the best games of Warcraft 3 ever!
Wind riders really need hardcore buff. It's like you bring paper balls soaked in piss to fight someone who use loaded guns ...
17:26 driveby wyvern
I quite often go 1 grunt tech into Wyvs timing attack vs a quick expo and it almost always works
my tactic in wc3 when i first started was always archer on hyppos and try to kill goldmine or harras :D
I didn't play much of TFT expansion when it came out, I pretty much stuck to ROC my entire ladder career. A bit of it was ignorance and not wanting to learn the new units and the other half was I didnt like the changes. Units strong in ROC were nerfed in TFT, towers were made weaker, I had over 1k games played 1v1 ladder and had my game play pretty set and didnt want to relearn strats.
Anyways, I said all of that to say this, mass wyverns was THE strat for orc in ROC, especially at lower tiers. Every Orc would tower up, harass/creep with hero as they tech up and go straight to wyverns. If they harass it would be BM, if they wanted creep it would be Farseer but always went Tauren second. After going wyverns they would throw some shaman in. 99% of Orcs did that vs. me (Human) in 1v1 and 2v2 at my level. Again, I wasn't high tier, not really sure of my rank/tier in ladder, I just had a lot of games played lol.
The reason why it wasn't as viable in TFT is for multiple reasons; towers got nerfed to hell so holding early all ins while you tech up was much harder and Wyverns themselves got nerfed, poison dmg and overall dmg was less and easier to kill.
“You cannot counter unit X with only unit Y in WC3.”
Except if it's against wyvern. 😅 One orb of venom counters mass wyvern. 😢
Orb of Venom , Op. Same as Orb Of Corruption.
My suggestion to buff wind riders is make them 3 food to start. After that, they need either more range or lower gold cost.
I remember playing wyvrens all the time
12:24 missed wisp on minimap 😢❤
Forgot to keep making bats to take out hippos
This is my go to old school orc strat lol win every time
If the side of your phone is covered when you scroll to this video, you might get excited to see grubby do ass wyverns.
Sk.Zasard ahh those memories
Hazeem approves this strategy.
Shows how bad i am/was at the game. I used to get beat by wyverns all the time back in early 2000's.
in 2003 i went 79-0 with mass wyverns. they beat everything lol
omg I did a ton of all wind riders in 2003 what nostalgia as an orc main
Old Grubby is back, he lose with crazy strat at high lvl but deliver gorgeos games
All these people trying giving YOU tips and tricks while they stuck at -2000raiting with a 1.7 winstreak %... Big Plays Grubby , like always :D
first strat i learned was wyvern poison sting rush
you have learned today, Grubby
I wonder if spirit linking wyverns will compensate their squishyness
Sorry if I missed explanation for this throughout the video, but since you're already committing to full wyverns comp, why keep them at 0 upgrades?
Atleast do it for the cool factor :D
Couple wyverns with shamans.
Mortars + Invisibility please
Invisibility goes out when attacking right ?
@@saimyintmyat9373 Yes but you invis ur mortars, send them into his base, in the rear, open fire on his mains,
I remember that windrider were for some reason popular vs undead even though they have web
Hey Grubby, do you think Wyverns and/or Raiders would be imbalanced if they benefited from Berserker Strength, like how Animal War Training helps multiple units (Knights + Dragonhawks + Gryphons)?
doesnt harass wisps until super late/cancel winds/upgrade armor against hippos but complains about how weak they are :( classic grubby QQ from 2003!
Windriders are already glass cannon that work by insta killing targets via focus fire so the venomous spears upgrade makes little sense except for hero or lots of hp single target focus. They rather need some survivability or utility. Maybe if it would also add like a 15% chance to miss autoattack it would somewhat help against orb of venom dh (5 attacking windriders stacking for 75% chance to miss).
Great game!
nc game cant belive you lost bad idea only air
Oof Grubby is evidently not so experienced with air micro in big battles. His micro is beautiful for small skirmishes (air or ground) even if multiple things are happening across the map, but when a huge fight breaks out it feels like that all goes out the window.
It's a common thing in 4v4 meta to understand there is the concept of "over microing" and this is especially the case for mass air. Grubby is trying to do the "correct" thing and pull back units that are being focus fired. But in big fights, unless your micro is immaculate, you're actually doing worse than just attack moving. Why? Because Grubby is struggling to select the right unit to pull back since air units clump up. So he keeps pulling back 2-4 wyverns each time he notices they're being focused. Moreover, he doesn't always bring them BACK into the fight.
The reason you lost 74 pop vs 48 pop is not because wyverns were too weak. You were trying to be a pro and pull back each individual unit and made your 74 army feel like a 50 food army because every time they focused one unit you would pull back 3.
Attack move works pretty good with air cuz they are all on the same spot and end up targeting one thing pretty often. Then if you see something about to die you can focus it. Seems like he might have won if he had spent less time microing that fight and brought some low health wyvs and bats in to harass the base as it went long.
Honestly, I thought this was a rather poor game by Grubby, and his loss nad *NOTHING* to do with the perceived "weakness" of Wyverns which he espouses. Let's see now:
1) No unit upgrades.
2) Picks spells over aura on TC level-up, when most of the elf army is either air, OR magic immune. ... The correct build was to go Stomp + Aura, prioritizing Aura... *NOT Shockwave... -_-*
3) Didn't bother to get FS lvl 5, when in fact he had AMPLE opportunity to do so.
4) Wasn't optimal with wyvern control, both in fights AND out of them, when it came to harassing elf buildings / wisps.
5) Left prematurely.
6) Questionable decision to NOT go Tiny expo at tier 3... EVEN WHEN HE WAS ALREADY *MASSIVELY AHEAD... O_o*
etc.
Just... not very good, G, sorry... :P
.
This looked very hard lol. Wind riders seem kinda bad tbh.
I like this strat
If you had a few bars in his base for that first fight you could have really wrecked his economy most likely
You really need damage tho. I played this strat a ton on roc and early tft and you need the cannon power. The armor doesnt do anything but the damage wouldve put substantially more pressure on his buildings units and heros during your assaults. 2x dmg upgrades couldve been snuck in.
hi grubby what about a strategy where you use scroll of speed on zappers if that works?
are zapper invincable with big bad vodoo?
so what about mass zappers and blow up your opponents base in record time?
invincable = invincible
hi grubby! I will love to see how your orc vs elf full air and undead full air until. The match will be very important to me because I remember I kept losing to my friend everytime he plays full air unit and I can’t do anything about it!! Is it true that Orc weakness is air unit?!. Please play those match and I like to see how you gonna counter them! This will means a lot to me. Thanks! That includes undead full froze dragon!
They need atleast basic upgrades and bloodlust.
I guess you should have built more bats.
Mass level ten dragons next pls haha
GG
I feel like you could have won with 2 more bats
i thuoght the build order for this fast wyv build was fs/sh for hex o_O
Why didn’t you enforce the wywerns with the protection and strike? They all were at 0
Vs elf? 😮
You should UP défense a little, your wyvs die so fast
Why you never finish their heroes? Pain to watch every single time.
not feeling old yet? realise u remember Zacard
gg
Zacard
i think stomp and SH wins it
Why killing that innocent Owl ? 😞
Spirit link
Where are all the dota videos man come on. Grubby REALLY needs to make a second channel. Cause what are the odds
Strange hero pick...Blade+Shadow Hunter...get hex and hard focus heroes + heals...
you cannot harass the enemy for so long with Blade. Also, there is no one to protect the Shadow, you just get mana burned.
@@dulaan5689oh you can. Watch his solo Blade runs. 😂
@@dulaan5689Low lvl mana burn is useless
wyv were op back in RoC, in TFT they are baaaad :(
Not to take away anything from the opponent, he played really well. But when a 50 population army runs from one DH there's something wrong. Since forever he's just not balanced.
It really is more of Wind Rider being too weak and less of DH being too strong
DH isn't too strong, mana burn is too strong. against wyverns its just cuz wyverns suck
Déjà vu
Y wyws Are So low hp
Second
ncccc
You were doing good until you stopped making bats.
Firstt❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
night elf dh too easy and quick to upgrade and cheap for anti air, cannot win
DH is just a bit too broken not much you can do.
If you let's him hit lvl 3 mana burn with lvl 2 evasion there is nothing you can do about it.
It's not a good strategy
