Video interview with singer and guitarist Ezra Koenig from American indie rockband Vampire Weekend. FaceCulture spoke with Koenig about the new album Modern Vampires of the City, his sister's blog, his therapist mother, the interest in interactions within relationships, an art-filled household, not wanting to discuss his lyrics with others, Diane Young, Indo-Tibetan Buddhism class, Hannah Hunt, being a name fetishist, writing songs over time, collecting song ideas, finding the right songs, listening to a song 30 times, insecurities with Contra, a darker vision of the record, exploring different moods, building a foundation, the albums as a trilogy, reflecting on his their music, calming down after succes, living in LA, feeling aimless, starting up again, interests outside music, not wanting to limit himself, not taking anything for granted and a lot more! I adore the way he articulates himself and uses particular phrases to get his point across. Although I want to go into science, he really ignites my enthusiasm for music and analysing lyrics; Vampire Weekend really bring something to the music industry that it's been lacking for a long time.
I agree with you, and they're great, but to say that the music industry's been lacking is just ignorant, and you should probably open your ears up to what's been going on for the past 25 years. There's been no dip in intellectual depth or lyricism in music, you just haven't been presented with it.
Ryan Abram I know of many bands who have great depth to their lyrics, I just think Vampire Weekend do it in a way that is completely unique :)
He's an English Literature major, I believe, so it's not a surprise that he's quite articulate and well-spoken.
Speaking of name fetishes, I love the name Ezra; it has so many colors in it.

If my name inspire someone to write such a poem as what Ezra wrote for Hannah Hunt, specially the part it says:” A man of faith said hidden eyes could see what I was thinking, I just smiled and told him that was only true of Hannah …” I would need nothing else in my life.
