That was amazing. Your wife has the ultimate patience. People don’t appreciate all these hand crafted things in their homes today. It’s nice to see someone who really takes the time to do as much as possible to do things in the traditional way.

If so it makes sense, but presumably has two sides to be seen, so sometimes is seen the other way round. It looks like a good functioning symbol of them both to me. The horizontal joining lines are good too, as is the overlap, it is a cool and very personal little design touch.

My grandfather had a wood shop with every one of those tools. He made some beautiful furniture including the dining room table that has been in use for almost 70 years.
Those blades are very sharp and cut flesh as easy as the slice through the wood. And yet, no mistakes or miscalculations.
Watching a master craftsman is like witnessing a symphony being played. There is a Zen quality to the energy.
This place is more than just a restoration or a family home.
All the little details just add to the quality that once was and can be again.

Well worth waiting for! I'm so blown away by the craftsmanship, from the Ranma maker to the plasterer to your wife's skill with the shoji. This is more than just a house, it is a work of art and a labor of love. It is both a tribute to careful craftsmanship and a place where an active, loving family can live. Some "architect designed" houses only look good on the pages of magazines. They never look like a home. This looks like a home. There will be jigsaw puzzles on the living room table and socks on the bedroom floor. And it will still look beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing your home renovation journey and for introducing us to the skill of the craftsmen involved. I see the J and C In the design, it’s more of an Old English J, but it’s there. It could also be interpreted as life and family, the circle of life, and the 2 larger circles meaning mother and father with the smaller overlapping middle area being the children.
Japanese craftsmanship is second to none, they have such technical proficiency and patience working on their craft. It’s not only amazing, but it’s very interesting and enjoyable to watch them work! My great grandmother was Japanese, she told me so many stories about her growing up and her uncle being a woodworker. De sadly passed away in 1990 when I was 10 but I always have wanted to visit Japan and it’s the highest on my list of places to visit.
