ABOUT ME:
Thanks for visiting my channel, I hope you enjoyed the video! I founded Caterpillar Cross Stitch in 2015 when I tried desperately for months to find a modern baby sampler my mum could stitch for new baby Felicity that would fit in with her simple, contemporary nursery. I love cross stitch, running, baking fruit cakes, drinking gin, eating salted caramel ice cream and most crafts!
See you soon and happy stitching! Sally x

Marie, I love how you always present so many different options so each person watching can find something that works for them! Some people have strong opinions about what is right or wrong in cross stitching, but you present options in such a non-judgemental way ❤

Hi! You've a gorgeous photo there! Just decided to stop by and say hi. I hope I get a thank you
Thank you so much for teaching railroad stitching. I'm a newbee on my second project and had just started to blend threads and railroading makes the blend look so much more uniform in the overall look.
You are so welcome!
glad to know i already do the "drop the needle/thread and let it sort itself out" thing already! i've heard about thread conditioners on tiktok before but I've always been weary of them because i fear it makes the thread sticky, or your fingers greasy from holding on to it (and therefore the fabric wherever you're holding it)
Thank you so much for watching ☺️ the drop-the-needle trick it soo important. I personally use thread conditioner only as a last resort really - Thread Magic doesn't get as sticky as beeswax but if you do all the 1-6 tips, you might find that thread conditioner is rarely needed 😊
I tend to use it for very difficult threads like metallic that need that extra help to glide through fabric easily.
Hope this helps 😊

Thank you for some great tips! Another tip, from a video by the wonderful Vonna Pfeiffer aka The Twisted Stitcher, is to push your needle down through your fabric in the conventional manner of pointy end first but then bring it back up with eye of the needle first. This really does work as it minimises rotation of the needle & is best when using the two handed method ie one hand above & one below your fabric. Fabric is best when very taut eg. In a hoop or frame as the holes will be stretched open. 🙂
Dear Penny, thank you so much for watching - and for sharing these tips! ☺️ I will have to give it a try - I've previously heard of double-ended needles but this is a genius use of the standard needle!
I completely agree - taunt fabric is the best, when I don't stitch in hand, I have my projects stretched drum tight and get really nervous when the hoop can't keep the tension 😁

Do you remember what video that was of Vonna Pfeiffer’s?
@@paulettepatterson399 I’m not entirely sure I’m afraid but I think it was about 3 or so years ago, possibly when she was stitching the face of Jesus. I think it was on one of her videos stitching at home but there is a chance it was something she mentioned in one of her Fibre Talk with Gary chats. Hope that helps.

Thank you! Want is your frame you’re stitching on?
Thank you for these tips! I use Thread Magic...love it! I am going to start stroking my thread before I put it in my needle & start stitching! I love all of your tips!
Thank you so much for watching Janice, I'm so glad you found the tips helpful 😊 I love my Thread Magic, the thread is so soft afterwards and it's definitely a perfect tool to keep in your back pocket for any tangly thread 😊

@@janiceredden3431 you're welcome. How’re you doing today and where are you from?
Thanks for the tips, I’m new to cross stitch but loving it:)
Just a question that’s completely off your subject!
Can I move already stitched work under my hoop to do another side?
Hi Leeanne, thank you so much for watching 😊 I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying this wonderful craft!
Absolutely you can place a hoop over already stitched areas - the hoop will create a dent just as it does create it in the fabric, however that is easy to get rid of when you wash your piece after you've finished it. When you gently wash the project in a lukewarm water with a bit of dish soap and then gently iron on reverse, all creases will be gone so no need to worry about it! 😊

I have been stitching for many years and I have always been reluctant to use thread conditioner. I have read it can attract dirt over time as well as the other points you made about it, and also that beeswax can really coat the thread too much and make it gummy. I have a project coming up that has a great deal of white, and as we know, white cotton floss is very difficult to get neat stitches. Should I consider silk for this project? I've never been too much of a fancy floss lady, I like my DMC, but would appreciate your opinion. I heard that silk glides easier and stitches lay better. Is this true? Thank you!
What fabric make, color are you stitching on here?
Thanks for the tips but what are you using to keep the hoop.
Hi Barbara, thank you so much for watching 😊 do you mean the embroidery stand? This one is just a wooden table stand from Amazon (I found it under embroidery stand not cross stitch), no specific brand really.
It's great for tutorials under camera but I never use it for stitching sessions - I would wholeheartedly recommend checking out Lowery stand. LoveCrafts regularly run promotions on those and the give much more comfort and versatility than the wooden stand.
I'll post the wooden stand link below if you wanted to check it out though 😊

Have you tried double pointed needles? I saw on another channel that they thought it would have the same effect as railroading.
Thank you so much for watching Jamie 😊 I have them on my list of things to try, I'm definitely intrigued. I stitch with both hands when working on a project in a hoop/frame, so these would definitely come in handy. Lots of different reviews around, I'll definitely give it a go to see for myself!

I know the tips mentioned in the video. Are there tips for preventing thread from getting knotted in the back?? Or maybe I'm just not stroking my thread enough?
Hi Wendy, for knotting in the back I'd recommend two things - going a bit slower with your thread to not give it much opportunity to knot; and if you can, use your other hand to run the thread past one of your fingers on the back. This works excellently when stitching with both hands - I always lightly press against the thread in the place where it's going through the fabric and that way I'm helping it flatten and not tangle.
