  • This week on Rockonteurs we are joined by Adam Clayton from U2. What can you say about this band? Consistently one of the biggest groups of the last 40 years, hit albums, game changing tours, musically diverse, incredibly creative and risk taking and utter masters of their craft. U2 are one of the truly greatest bands of all time. On the show this week we have an in-depth conversation with Adam about the origins of the band, their influences, the early struggles and the huge success that followed. We discuss the ‘born with’ charisma of Bono who was a ready-made rock star, the virtuoso talent of the Edge and the dedication and passion of Larry.
It is a fascinating insight into the workings of a band who will never be forgotten and who continue to create a stunning body of music.

What a great interview! Adam is always great to listen to but even better when there's a great conversation.

I love the early day recollections. I know so many people who had a van and became the manager - budgie and Iain were always driving young Edinburgh bands of the day. My first U2 gig was in Night moves in glasgow. Tiny place - i will follow was superb and so evangelical - my mate Derek our bass player asked why i couldnt aing like Bono, and i said it was because i was a shite singer. It still feels as fresh today as 1981. Superb interview, thanks.

I owe Adam (and his bandmates) a big thank U: back in the 80’s I started playing bass because of him.
And reading books as well for that matter, because he was always photographed getting on or leaving planes and busses with U2 carrying them around, 😄.
At 52 I never stopped playing my bass in bands. I really fell in love with the bass. Still am. And with reading books it’s quite the same thing (I became a fr***ing teacher in Dutch literature and language 🤣).
    So, thank you 🙏!
(Yes, I did read Guy’s book too, and because of it’s rather sudden open ending I expect there’ll be at least one follow up. 😉)
    🖖

It is a pretty remarkable run that U2 has had so far without a lineup change (other than Edge's brother leaving when they were originally called The Hype or whatever). I couldn't think of another band that surpassed them in this regard until today's announcement that ZZ Top's Dusty Hill had passed away. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZZ_Top

@@Horizon344 Ronnie Wood is not an original member. And Bill Wyman left the band nearly 30 years ago. Also, Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, Mick Taylor were past members.

@@mitchdarby8027 True, but u2 had several other members early on whom were ditched, so I'm not so sure that the comparison between the 2 bands is so far out

@Horizon344 they were called the hype when edge's brother was in the band. U2 has always been the same line up since 1976 until the sphere gigs

It would have been nice to hear more of what the guests say, too much interruption and input from the interviewers

Hilarious how Guy picks up on Adam not really being Irish. Larry's the only actual Irishman in U2. The rest of them are blue-blood Brits.

They all have Irish accents except Adam who was born in the uk and moved to Dublin when he was 6 yrs old .

Bono and Larry were both born in Ireland, The Edge moved there when he was 6 months old, and Adam when he was 6 years old, and all are Irish citizens and identify as Irish.

Not correct, Bono's parents were both Irish.
