I'm 79 born 1944. I had a dolls house when I was around six - seven. It had paper made to look like roof tiles on the roof. The front was painted cream and had a painted rose bush around the front door. The door and window frames were metal with criss-crossed panes. It had a garage. My gran bought me little people to live in it. They were made of wool covered wire, with heavy lead feet so they'd stand up unaided. They were dressed in felt clothing.
Yes, washing day was Mondays and we had a mangle which stood outside. We had a shallow stone sink - not a butlers sink which were a bit posher and it had a wooden draining board. Some women were lucky enough to have a gas boiler. We only had gas lighting. Our house was a two up two down terrace. Your house is based on a house that was slightly up market, so probably had electricity. Our bedrooms all had fireplaces. We used iron, irons heated up on the range or gas stove. Some housewives if they had electricity in their homes, had electric irons which were plugged into the light socket. We had a black iron gas stove.
We just had brooms for sweeping. Some lucky ladies had a Ewbank which was wood, had a roller and was pushed around manually but they weren't very efficient on lino. We ironed on the kitchen table. If lucky enough to have an ironing board they were made of wood. No fridges, so perishable food was put in little wooden 'safes' with mesh fronts and fixed to the outside wall of the kitchen in the shade, but not used much in summer though!
Fireguard around the fire and clothes aired on it. We had a wooden clothes horse too.
No sliced bread, so breadboard with matching bread knife always on the table, along with a brown teapot and cut glass sugar bowl.
Wicker shopping baskets. No fitted carpets. Rag rugs in front of the fire. Fancy lace curtains were essential. No plastic. Galvanised buckets. Front step scrubbed and done with whitening powder every week. And where I lived there were no bathrooms, so a big galvanised bath hung on the back wall of every house. Hope that helps :)

This is how it happens. You get one dollhouse, think you are done, and suddenly you have several houses, none of which will ever be truly "finished" because you always find things to add. It's the best hobby ever! Your new house is lovely, congratulations on your purchase and I am excited to see what you do with it.

There is a book and dvd on a TV series about The 1940's house which tells you everything a 1940's house would have had. And it tells you about rationing, the Anderson shelter and about growing your own veg. The book and dvd would be a great help to you both. I love the new project and can't wait to see it's progress. I'm even more excited to see it come alive as a history project to commemorate the horrible time that was the Blitz. My uncle was stationed at Boxted as a fighter pilot who's job it was to escort bombers to Germany, but to also protect British citizens from the German bombing missions. He was killed in action in 1943 and this will be such a special project for me! I would love to help if I could, and hopefully I'll see some ways that I can make it happen. 🙂

I know you said your intentions was to redo the exterior of the house with new paper, but it might be more neat, given how the poor house has been treated by time, to re-shingle the roof with popsicle sticks. you could even strengthen the doors of the house by gluing popsicle sticks and coffee stirrers over the existing stone and repainting it to match the original paper. so excited to see what you decide to do with it though!

For the fascia timbers on that house, you can get a bundle of coffee stirring sticks that are perfect mini planks of wood that are easy to snip to size! I like that dollshouse! We apparently still had an Anderson shelter here when my parents first moved here. I love repair projects 😁 One thing I will say is that my house was built in 1938 and the white and black checker tiles were all over the place! So 1930s-1950s is my guess 😉 I think the name is "The Leas" which is a house name I have seen before!

I'm amazed at the little details - even the floor trim! I love the wall paper with the little feathery plume flowers, and the childrens paper is an almost exact match stylistically to what was in the childrens room in my Grandmothers house - last updated (until it changed hands) in the 30s and 40s. Pinks, golds, maroons, browns, and sage greens were the palete of choice for living rooms of the period and scenic wall papers, and pink/black and pastel yellow/black tiles and the checker-block floors in the kitchens and bathrooms.

The fireplace may never have had a mantle. Some didn’t starting in the 1940’s and after - the modern style, right? Dad had to get clever with ours, creating wooden pieces that could be temporarily pressed between the bricks, so we would have a place to hang the stockings at Christmas. 🙂

Well i would say that doll house has found it's forever home with you dear ladies. I like the 40s decorating and fashions. This should be an interesting project. Poor Sunny cat didn't seem to like it. After it starts being repaired i imagine he will start enjoying it. Looking forward to seeing how you restore it.

Just like your mudlarking finds, you two see the beauty and potential in the broken and discarded!!! Looking forward to this project. I'm sure Sunny cat wants to get in and lay in this house too!🥰🥰🥰

A worthy rescue and a what looks to be an enjoyable challenge. We like the style of the house, particularly like the nursery decor; as you surmise Fleur, the era is probably late forties into early fifties. How about the name ‘Holly House?
