  • Part 5 of this series follows the DSP&P/C&S route from a remaining telegraph pole to the restored Tunnel Gulch Water Tank. Numerous rock cribbing walls, most of which are still intact over a century after their construction, are pointed out as well. The upper grade that leads to the west portal of Alpine Tunnel can just now begin to be seen.

      Thanks! I wish I could add more photos, but there just aren't many photos of this stretch of the line. Most pics are from Woodstock on up to the tunnel which makes sense as that is an amazing stretch of RR engineering. Still, this section is stunning in its own right.

    That area is so remote and so sparsely populated that it is cheaper for vehicles rather than trains to run through there

      At the time of its construction, though, it was a much shorter route to transport coal (and other freight) from the Gunnison area to Denver and much cheaper than wagons.
